A place to come and kvetch/worry/chill for anyone at risk of developing pre-eclampsia in their pregnancy. We have buckets for those still feeling sick, cushions for those who are just plain knackered, and crisps and ginger beer for everyone else. Come and say hi!

hi
titan I have have it in 3 pregnancies i think i have had the uterine doppler thing - is this the scan where they do the wierd coloured blood flow thing? if so i have had that the last two pregnancies...if not i have no idea! I tend to just turn up and hope for the best!.

My sister apparently had blood tests she was told were ok so thats one thing, i have no idea about protein in her wee, the midwife came to the house last week (which is when she got sent in) and said the protien was "off the scale" in her words but at the hospital they seemed unconcrned so no idea. Her swelling has gone down a little she has another appointment tomorrow so see how that goes. She is 36 weeks now so part of me hopes they just get him out safe soon - but maybe this is my anxiety/fear talking!

As for me I am doing ok, had a scan last week which showed baby is growing well and my blood pressure was ok on the tablets i am on (i think it was ??/84 which is ok !)
I am about to leave the house for my 33 week appointment now since i going weekly (have an appointment at 1:45) and im a stupidly nervous which i know wont help at all but i cant help it!. so many times i have got myself in a state about it been sent for monitoring in the day assesement unit then been sent home - i should rent a private bed there i think.

Dirtydishesmakemesad · 09/01/2012 15:07

well as predicted off to hospital for monitoring blood pressure was 158/98 and had 2 protein - hopefully will go down once ive settled down a bit though it normally does lol.
aparentlyt he baby is back to back in a really bad postion which made it relaly hard to pick up the heartbeat - she was kicking the midwife liek mad but couldnt get a clear heartbeat so apparently i woudl have had to go up for that anyway, so all in all an annoying appointment!

broccolitrees · 09/01/2012 17:33

that's annoyinng dirty but good your having an eye kept on.

alpine - all normal! hope you make it another 5 weeks Smile do you mind me asking how far along you were when it reared it's ugly head the last time? i ask because i was only 28ish weeks and have serious doubts about making it another 12 without it?

my 12 week scan is tomorrow. i am supposed to see a consultant tomorrow to discuss a plan of care as well. i will be really upset if i don't. so far, i am not very impressed with the care down here.

bishboschone · 09/01/2012 18:26

This is probably a bit Late dirty but that's what happened to me at 29 weeks and I didn't leave . Pack a bag . I had ds at 33 weeks .

AlpinePony · 09/01/2012 18:39

dirty I hope you're ok, good luck! Same as bishbosch, I was told to go in to hospital to get it checked, i was deeply suspicious and packed my bag on the way, a few hours later I was told I wouldn't be leaving without my baby.

broccoli I was diagnosed at 36+3. I'm 34 +2 now and er... Must actually pack my hospital bag rather than just saying "tomorrow". ;) good luck tomorrow!

What are they looking for with the uterine doppler? If this is the one where they're looking at the blood flow to the placenta, they're checking that the placenta is still working right?

bishboschone · 09/01/2012 19:20

How long we're you in alpine? I was in for a week with my dd and 4 with ds ! Argh !!

mungojerrie · 09/01/2012 20:12

hi all, I feel quite relieved to have found this thread. I am 17wks pregnant with no2 and had pre eclampsia with dd nearly 3 years ago. I was in hospital from 35 wks till I had her. I really would like to be better informed this time around as last time I think I just did what I was told, despite consultants disagreeing about inducing me early or upping the medication.

I am due to see consultant at 20wks - what questions do you recommend? Also I noticed that quite a few of you seem to have had extra growth scans, can you explain why?

Thanks!

bishboschone · 09/01/2012 20:18

I think if the placenta starts to fail the baby doesn't grow mungo. I had Doppler scans along the way too to make sure the placenta was still working.

AlpinePony · 09/01/2012 20:32

I went in at 36+3, had the magnesium that day, they wanted me to go to term (obviously) but we both deteriorated (growth scan revealed he wasn't!), so I was induced at 36+5.

Wingdingdong · 09/01/2012 21:15

Hi, can I ask you all for some advice/thoughts please? I don't want to overreact or seem paranoid but I'm getting a bit concerned.

I'm currently 33+1, fifth pregnancy but this will be DC2. Was not diagnosed with PE/HELLP with DD (now 2.5) but the hospital was truly crap (to the point that several people have told me it was medical negligence, and when the current ob at a different hospital requested the notes from that pregnancy she was told they wouldn't release them! She suspects a big cover-up - DD was born at 42+3 by EMCS for fetal distress with oligohydramnios and a placenta that had already fallen apart. She had post-maturity syndrome and needed physio for a year and is still on meds). At my booking-in appt for this pregnancy I was told that having had severe oedema and proteinuria at every check-up from around 28w, the MW considered that to be PE even without high blood pressure. I have problems with low blood pressure - last appt was 90/50. With the last pregnancy my blood pressure started off 80/50 ish and ended up 120/90, which was considered to be fine.

I have a pretty rubbish obstetric history anyway and this pregnancy has had more than its fair share of problems, including 4.2mm nuchal fold + 9mm cystic hygroma, 2 weeks of partial vision following loss of consciousness at 16w (put down to low blood pressure), admission to L&D for labour contractions at 24w, admission again at 25w for bleeding... I'm being seen every 2 weeks anyway, alternately by fetal medicine ob consultant and high-risk delivery ob consultant. I really don't want to appear paranoid and my next appt is next Tues.

However: last week's appt (with GP due to New Year and staff shortages at hospital) showed proteinuria, again. GP wasn't concerned due to low blood pressure. She noted oedema (9am appt!) with slight pitting. I feel absolutely exhausted and terrible. Over the past couple of weeks the nausea has returned (had bad MS till about 20w) and I've been throwing up a few times. We went shopping for baby stuff on Saturday and at one point I just had to sit down really quickly - felt dizzy and really hot, started getting little dancing pinpricks of light. 15 mins later my hands were VERY puffy, and purple-grey up to the second knuckle, white from the knuckle to the tip. I swapped wedding rings a couple of months ago, from my usual size I to a cheap Argos band in size M. That's now too tight. For the past 10 days or so I've been getting increasing epigastric pain high up on the right side under the ribs, painful enough to stop me sleeping at night.

I really don't know what to do - call up/go in, even though BP is only 90/50, or wait since it's only a week till the next appt? I feel like I must be close to exhausting the supply of goodwill and I do NOT want to be classed as a hypochondriac! I've been having on/off bleeding since the last admission; I've told them about it afterwards but not bothered going in. At the moment I really feel something's not right but I can't tell what. On the other hand I'm seriously panicking about everything I need to get ready, plus all the work I have to do this week - 30 essays to mark by end Weds. DD's at nursery tomorrow and Weds, after that I'd have a childcare problem too. Everything I can find seems to say there's only a problem with high BP. Several of you seem to have different experiences.

Anyway - sorry this is so long but could really do with advice.

mungojerrie · 09/01/2012 21:17

I will do some reading up on that then and request extra scan. I feel like it all happened so quickly last time and I was really kept in the dark about everything, what could happen etc, so I want to know what I'm up against this time round.

MrsAmos · 09/01/2012 21:33

Great thread BTW. I developed PE in first pregnancy very suddenly at 33 weeks, was hospitalised straight away and kept in until failed induction followed by EMCS at 36+1. DS1 weighed just 4lb (he had measured approx 2wks behind DD from 22wks in MW appts but I never saw the same MW twice so it was hard to get anyone to listen to my concerns about feeling rubbish and also feeling like he was constantly doing somersaults) He had tied 2 knots in cord and had issues feeding but was otherwise ok and is thriving now despite ongoing sleep issues which I have been told are likely to be linked to birth trauma......
I am currently pregnant with DC2 (15+5) and booked in to see consultant next week to review notes and discuss best way forward for this pregnancy. I have been feeling good this time until this weekend when I got a searing headache, nausea and dizziness and am now worrying myself sick that I might be gearing up for PE again. I'm also nervous about what the consultant will say re. VBAC vs ELCS - not entirely sure which I would prefer yet, I just don't want to be pushed into something especially as DS is only 14mths (will be 20mths when DC2 arrives) and I have various concerns around labour given that I've been told he wouldn't have survived it with the 2 knots in his cord - which they had no idea were there until the EMCS!

AlpinePony · 10/01/2012 06:56

wingding I would phone your consultant ASAP this morning, it does sound as though she's thorough and has no intention of wishing to repeat mistakes made by others in the past. Tell her all the symptoms you listed, you don't sound well at all. :( please let us know how you get on.

broccolitrees · 10/01/2012 09:09

wingding agree with alpine you need to ring your obstetric consultant and tell her all the symptoms you have and how poorly you are feeling, because 'general malaise' (general feeling of being unwell) is a very relevant symptom of pe /hellp too. hope all is ok with you and that it is not serious but always better to have it checked out

broccolitrees · 10/01/2012 09:18

oops! very was meant to be underlined not crossed out!

Wingdingdong · 10/01/2012 09:32

Ok, thanks. Sorry for butting in on your thread, thought you ladies might have more of an idea/experience than the standard "symptoms lists" offered by Dr Google.

Reluctance to call is mostly due to just how good they've been, which I know makes no logical sense whatsoever, but I don't want to waste anyone's time having taken up so much of it already...

Wishing you all smooth pregnancies (if there's any such thing!).

AlpinePony · 10/01/2012 09:39

wingding Well give her a call and you can always say "I'm sorry, I don't want to sound like a whiny-pants" - I'm sure she'll be absolutely fine about it! :) When all is said and done you won't give a shite about sounding like a hypochondriac when it comes down to the health of your baby. I won't go to the doctor unless something needs stitched back on Wink - but there's no way on earth I'd risk my baby. Does that make sense?

I think your symptoms sound very serious, please call! Btw, you are absolutely not "butting in" on the thread - we're all here to try and ensure that we have safe pregnancies.

broccolitrees · 10/01/2012 13:50

yay - good scan this morning! has brought me forward a few days to 13 weeks today :)
will be seen in the hypertension clinic next week - will let you know what they suggest the plan will be. the midwife i spoke to this morning asked me to give her a run down of what my previous consultant said and she agreed with everything so hopefully i will be seen and scanned frequently with regular bloods bp and urine checks :)
hope everyone ok
wingding as alpine said, ring them, they absolutely won't mind - that's what they're there for, and as they have been so good, they will help you even if that turns out only too be reassurance. and, you are very welcome on this thread :)

thejaffacakesareonme · 10/01/2012 19:22

Wingding - in my last pregnancy I found it useful to test my urine for protein - Boots sell the test strips. I found it just gave me added reassurance. If I were you I'd also phone the consultant. Maybe you could be squeezed into a clinic this week.

I saw the MW today and all is good - BP was 120/70. Next Monday I see the consultant and will hopefully get a date for the c section in early March. It's all exciting!

LordFlashheart · 10/01/2012 20:32

Wingding you need to get some blood tests done, you symptoms are really worrying

broccolitrees · 10/01/2012 21:12

good news jaffacakes
any news wingding

Wingdingdong · 10/01/2012 23:30

Well, the GP called me before I had a chance to phone anyone! She'd sent off the last sample to the lab and it came back pos for infection. Sort of a relief really. She's a bit concerned about the other symptoms but thinks might be related to otherwise symptomless UTI - says to phone or go in if pain or oedema worsen, otherwise I should be ok till cons appt next Weds by which time antibiotics course will have finished - & if I still have proteinuria then we know there's a real problem. First UTI in my life and no UTI symptoms - typical! Fingers crossed the meds work quickly and that's the cause of the epigastric pain and nausea. Thanks again. GP agreed with you all - said to see her/call even with non-specific worry or go straight to hospital and not feel bad.

Dirtydishesmakemesad · 11/01/2012 04:20

Hello just thought I'd do a Quick update. Got sent home the day before yesterday. The community midwife came to the house to check yesterday morning and my blood pressure had shot up again to 150/114 so I got sent to labour ward, so I Have been admitted now. I am now on mOre tablets, I had a bit of protein apparently buy also blood so they seem to think maybe infection but who knows. Blood tests came back ok. Baby seem ok although I'm measuring 31 weeks rather than 33 but again they seem ok with that. I Have felt done but the last few hours feel a bit Bleugh. I have been told that if my blood pressure stays under control I will be allowed home tomorrow , at the moment it seems ok but it shoots right up as the tablets wear off so not sure if that's ok or not!

Dirtydishesmakemesad · 11/01/2012 09:56

Ok had steroids For the baby now and starting to be a tad worried :(

missingmymarbles · 11/01/2012 10:00

i have name-changed - formerly broccoli :)

dirty if you're still in the hospital you are in the right place. you'll be monitored and they will plan care accordingly. steroids are precautionary at this stage - planning for if delivery is necessary. thinking of you, keep us posted if you get the chance
