8 week reassurance scan query

Is the 8 week scan likely to be internal or ultrasound? If it varies from hospital to hospital I'll give them a ring. Not for a few weeks but need to know whether to drink lots of water or not!

I have had two 9 week scans by ultra sound. Was in hospital with hyperemisis on both occasions, so was actually rather dehydrated. I would ring your hospital and ask

In my experience they will try abdominal scan first and if that does not give them the information they require they will try again with the transvaginal scan. If they see everything is fine with the abdominal scan, they probably won't bother with an internal.

I had scans at 6+4 and 9 weeks this time and neither of those required an internal scan. But as you say, different policies in different hospitals.

Drink a pint of water an hour before your scan, you can always go for a wee if they want to do internal.

I had my 8 week scan externally by ultrasound. In fact I had one at 6 weeks by ultrasound too!

I had one at 7 weeks plus a few days and they went straight to transvaginal. Good luck!

Thanks guys. It does seem like it varies from hospital to hospital so I'll give them a ring.

I had 1 at 5w6d that was a tummy scan saw fetal pole, heartbeat gest sac but no yolk sac so had to go back for re scan went last week at 8wks and was again tummy scan and saw everythin. I also think it depends on people as my mate had scan at 7weeks and she had to have internal scan as they couldn't see much. Also I never had full bladder due to the sickness. But they do like you to have full bladder gives a more clearer pic.

I had a scan at 8+2 privately and they did an external scan and an internal scan - they did the external one first with my full bladder and when they were ready to do internal I went an emptied my bladder.

I would work on the principle that it's easier to wee it out than fill it up quickly again!!!

I had an early scan at 6+ weeks which was done internally however they did ask if I had a full bladder and I'd try an abdominal one first, I am overweight so don't think this helped, had a scan at 9+ weeks yesterday and was done abdominally, if I were you I would go with a full bladder and they will always let you empty your bladder if they need to go internally. Good luck :)

Yeah what everyone else said - I've had about a million pre-12 week scans and they usually try abdo first with full bladder, get you to empty and then repeat with internal if the picture was bad. That's across a couple of NHS/private hospitals in Herts and London.

I'd say ring them if you can be bothered, otherwise just drink a bit of water beforehand - you can always go to the loo if they say it's going to be an internal. Don't go mental with the water though, I've been told a couple of times to go and half-empty my bladder because it was overfull.
