I have my 3 month probation hearing on 10th January and Ill be 11 and a half weeks pregnant.. I have not told my work that I am pregnant and I dont think they suspect. Any tips on if I should tell them, im thinking of leaving it as long as possible but is that fair?

Im in the same boat I've only for been at my Job a month and I'm 21 weeks pregnant I'm terrified of telling them.. I don't think they can do much they defo can't sack you for it they have to have a real good argument that you can't do your job :-) I wouldn't worry

Hi, i got pg quite soon after starting a new job, I really didn't want to tell them, I waited untill I had my scan... then waited some more ... I was 15 weeks before I told my boss, even then I was a coward I waited till she was on annual leave and then wrote her a note. ( hangs head with shame about lack of assertion) not sure what I would have done if she hadn't been on leave.

Legally I think you have to tell them by 24 weeks, but I wouldn't wait that long.

if I was to do it again i'd wait for my scan and then go in really happy and say great news!!!!

good luck.

I wouldn't tell them until you have to. I live in Ireland and am a nurse, i was in discussions re a transfer to a different locality closer to home. All going fine until I announced (over the phone that I was 20 weeks pregnant). Transfer off straight away, I was told by the female manager I was talking to " well you are no-good to me then as your maternity leave won't be covered". HR were going to peruse the matter on my behalf but I chose to leave it at the time as I would follow it up on my return if I didn't get transferred following my leave. In the end I took a career break. Just be careful and don't feel that you have to make any announcements just yet. I would definately wait until after your review and preferably probation period if possible.

Thanks guys! I have not had my scan date yet (only saw mw last week) so thinking i might leave it as long as possible. Im dreading it though as they took me on as expanding this year. Also i feel terrible as plans are being made for the summer and i wont be there!

Mrsmamma im in same boat

Due aug 12th

Start new job Jan 9th - will have a three month review, according the HMRc website mat leave thingy I have to inform them by 5th may of my intention to take mat leave.

So I won't be telling them officially til then. Probably not. Although, I've lost my flat tummy already (this is number 3) and I am starting to show at 8+ weeks so will probably be obvious by 16 weeks!!

Purpleroses · 03/01/2012 19:46

Wouldn't tell them until you're starting to show, or you need to (eg if you're being asked to do things that aren't safe for you to do, or are being asked to commit to something at work that you know you won't be able to do because you'll be on leave, and you'd be letting people down a lot by taking it on in the first place).

Certainly not necessary before the 1st scan, and it's all too common to find you are passed by for things once you announce it, so best not to do it any sooner than you have to.

I found out I was pregnant the day before I started a new job (ironically my old job was with a nursery goods company - bad timing lost staff discount) and was reallly worried as I had been recruited specifically because 2 people were about to go on Maternity leave. I was going to leave it as long as possible but after having to lie once about why I needed time off for my 12 week scan I decided that honesty is the best policy. I was surprised by how well my boss took the news, although he was obviously surprised and probabaly a little frustrated I have had no problems so far (28 weeks). My main concern was that the company I work for isn't very family friendly - my CEO has been heard to remark that people who take time off work to have kids are wasting their lives! (Female CEO btw). Get hold of your company's maternity policy and a copy of your legal rights and make a decision from there. If you plan to return there to work after the birth and will need to take time off to attend appointments you may find it easier to tell them sooner rather than later. Good luck..

I fell pregnant within 2 weeks of starting my job! which meant i was 12 weeks at almost the same time as my 12 week probation finished, really hard not to mention anything esp as one of the other girls announced she was pregnant (5 weeks between us) I had my 12 week review on the thursday and my 12 week scan was on the following monday, and they also put me forward a few days. My boss was shocked but slightly more so when i said i needed to swap days off for my scan in feb, she thought that was my 12 week scan not my 20 ... oops lol.
Not great timing but considering how long we had been trying you cant keep putting things off!

luckily i can arrange my appointments around my day off in the week so that I dont mess them around.

i'm in a similar boat. i started new job on 3rd and found out i was pregnant on boxing day.

I have been shite at work this week; exhausted and nauseous, so i'm tempted to tell. My company has a policy that says you must inform them before 15 wks to be eligible for 6 wks mat pay.

i think they may appreciate/respect candour.

mrsmamma · 09/01/2012 13:35

I'll tell them maybe next week! Probation up and hearing tomorrow eek!
