Baby born at 35+1 what will it be like?

my sister is in hospital at 35+ 1 today, very high bp had a bleed and now apparently her tummy is measuring small (30 weeks) so she is havign a scan. TBH having been in a similar situation myself twice to me it looks as though she may be having her baby sooner rather than later.
My earliest baby was 36+0 induced for high bp going on scan date and he was 5 pounds 8 and generally ok although needed warming - i got to keep him by my bed and take him home after 48 hours.

However i know that a week is a big difference at this stage and obviously all babies are different so at 35+1 or thereabouts if she DID have him what sort of thing could she expect - she is still saying she thinks they will send her home so im just trying to get an idea of what may or may not happen in the next couple of days!

At 35+1 the baby could be totally fine and even avoid SCBU altogether presuming no other health problems, lungs will most likely be fine at this stage. My twins were in SCBU (after being delivered at 31 weeks), and I think their cut off was 4kg for admission.

I can't envisage too many problems - she'd be considered full term at 37 weeks (so 13 days time - not long) :)

The last few weeks are all about weight gain, so the majority of babies born at 35+ I would imagine should be fine.

i had dd2 at 33 weeks, she also hadn't grown since 30 weeks. she was born at 4lb 1oz, screaming her head off, and apart from some jaundice was fine. we stayed in together for 10 days and she was only in SCBU for one night, and that was more to do with my high bp than her being ill.

the very, very best of luck to your sister. the thing that got me most was the shock, and the loss of my pregnant time with her, iykwim? everyone else was so relieved that she was okay, but i was a bit stuck on the fact that i still felt pregnant. so she might need some help with that.

I had my twins at 35+4 and they looked like little yellow aliens. We were in the transitional care ward for 2 weeks until they lost the jaundice, learnt to suck and could regulate their temps. Same goes for another set of twins born that day at 33 weeks.

Twins are generally smaller and less developed for gestational age though aren't they? Op's nephew/niece will have a womb all to itself so would pretty much be fine. might be a little hairy, but otherwise good.

I had my little boy at 35+4 and he was fine, 5lbs2oz, stayed with me the whole time and we got home the next day. no problems at all. hope all goes ok

I had my DS at 35 weeks. He was 5lb and thankfully we didn't need to stay in SCBU. He did go down for help with feeding and got bad jaundice so we had to stay in hospital for a whole week which was not a good experience. He should have been a September baby and instead came in August but is still top of his class in year one at school so thankfully no long lasting issues. Grin

I think babies can vary quite a bit at that age. DS1 was born at 36 weeks and weighed 5 pounds 4 ounces. Despite having a reasonable weight he had difficulty breathing and regulating his temperature and had to spend 10 days in SCBU. Hopefully your sister's baby will be much stronger and avoid that.

My twin DDs were born at 37 weeks and were both reasonable weights 5lbs4 and 5lbs 10 and did not go to ScBU. They are now taller than me.
I'm sure you and your baby will be fine. Try not to worry and keep positive. All the best. Xmas Smile
Try not to dwell on what might go wrong. The chances are very small. Talk to other mothers of premature babies and take heart from their success stories.

My dd was born at 36+3 wks weighing 5lb 12oz and I was told that 30 % of babies born at 36wks need scbu. Mine was one of them as she had problems breathing and regulating her temperature, both treatable problems with time and medical care. She also couldn't feed as had an immature sucking reflex. I would say your sisters baby is at risk of having these issues if there are problems rather than the more serious ones. I would say that the percentage of those needing scbu is probably a little higher too.

I've had two babies at 35 weeks, and one at 36 weeks. All fine, with a spot of "grunting" with DS3 who was the earliest (35 + 3), and no need for SCIBU. Though their weights helped I'm sure - the lightest was 6lb 5 and DS3 was a wopping 8lbs 6oz. Fingers crossed for your sister and her baby. x

DS3 was born at 35 weeks and was fine, he weighed 7lb 3 though, he did spend an hour or so in neocare room in hospital but was back with me and we were home after 48 hours :) Good luck to your sister

My first (ds) was born at 35 weeks, he was 4lb 11oz which is considered small for 35 weeks. He had no suck reflex so had to be tube fed for the first 4 days until it kicked in, he also couldn't keep his temp up by himself for 6 days. He stayed with me on the postnatal ward for the 6 days we were in but we had to go to the SCBU 4x a day for his blood sugar to be checked and he had photo therapy for jaundice.

He had no problems breathing and by the time he was a week old he was just like a normal newborn, just tiny, lol. Oh, I had to give him iron supplements for the first 6 weeks because of his missed iron storage time.
