Cycling with SPD/PGP?

I had SPD/PGP pretty badly with my first pregnancy - crutches and house bound in last few months. I'm now pregnant with DC2 and am planning to be much more pro-active this time - osteopath, exercises from early on etc - whatever it takes! BUT I am v scared as I am only 5 weeks (!) and already getting achey in that same old way after walking.

My main question is about cycling - I am back to work in a few days and cycle there - 10/15 mins each way. I also cycle around during the day often.
Will I have to stop this? Will it make my SPD/PGP worse/come on earlier? Any experiences of cycling with SPD/PGP would be really helpful thanks :)

I had SPD badly first time around (was on crutches for the last month or so) and my physio advised keeping knees together as much as possible eg getting out or bed or car so I would have thought cycling goes counter to this.
If you can't avoid it, maybe just keep an eye on how it makes you feel and stop if you think it makes the pain worse.

FWIW I thought I could feel the pain coming back early on too (tbh it had never really gone away completely) however, having been very careful and making sure I kept working on my core strength, I have so far managed to avoid more than the odd twinge and am currently 35+ weeks so it is not inevitable that it will come back.

Hi, thanks diedandgonetodevon!

I cycled a bit yesterday and afterwards had that really strong kicked in the crotch sensation (sorry if tmi) so I think I may need to avoid it as much as possible... am pretty worried though as it is by far the easiest way to get to work. Otherwise am looking at a much longer walk, probably not great for SPD either. :(

I have read that some women find cycling good with SPD, and I was hoping for that, but it doesn't seem to work like that for me so far. Anyone else have experience with this?

died - do you mind me asking you how you worked on your core strength? Was it Pilates? Am really encouraged by your story that SPD was not as bad the second time.

Hi! I'm six months gone with spd and seeing a physio. She said cycling was fine, to carry on. And I do find it a lot easier than walking as it's non weight bearing. You're exactly spreading your legs, so maybe just aware of your cycling style. I've a big old Dutch bike with lots of room for my legs and an upright position, so feel I have good ladylike posture. What kind of bike do you have?

ooh, kicked in the crotch is not good Sad.
If the only real alternative to cycling is walking, i think I would actually pick the cycling- if nothing else it's faster.

It wasn't pilates- nothing so glamourous I'm afraid Grin. I have horses so it was a lot of schooling without stirrups, hill walking and generally being hyper-aware of using and holding in my core muscles. Since becoming pregnant, I've pretty much just tried to keep my knees together and do the sheet of exercises the physio gave me last time...so far I've been ok and I can't quite believe it. I always expected to be more crippled the second time around.
