19 weeks pregnant, gone through CVS, amnio, laser ablation, one twin has died

I became pregnant after my second cycle of IVF, with very hormone levals so fairly sure there were twins in me. At week 6 and week 8 we saw the little ones, and then I had scan at 11 weeks and 4days. To be told one twin had a very high nuchal fold, there was something very seriously wrong but the consultant was unsure to the cause at this stage. We were told that we would need the babies separating as they were identical and if the ill baby died before they were separated they both would. We were referred to London for laser ablation which could only be done at 17 weeks plus. We had 2 weekly scans to check them both, I was told that if the ill baby died there would be no bleeding or pain I would not know. I had a CVS done at 13 weeks, which told us the ill baby had turners syndrome, as the weeks went on the fluid was from the neck to the pelvis, there were four pleurel effusions.
The baby kept strong and we had the laser ablation, which was successful, complicated and long. We found out the following day that mother nature had made it's mind up and the ill baby had died.
Anybody out there worried do not be I believe my situation is an anomally, has happened before but rare. I feel that I have coped well due to the fact we believe that the baby I have is healthy and I've got to pray she stays with me.

Best wishes for the future. Mother Nature can be cruel sometimes Sad

How awful for you :( Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

If they were identical how can only one of them have had a genetic syndrome?

chocolatchaud · 01/01/2012 16:32

So sorry that you have lost one of the twins, and best wishes for you and your baby.

I have a friend who was in a very similar situation - she has gone on to have a very healthy baby boy. I always feel guilty, as I tried to be positive and say that she had a healthy baby, and could concentrate on him. I'm sure that wasn't what she wanted to hear at the time. It is still awful to lose a baby.

All the best for the future.

minitoot · 01/01/2012 16:40

I'm so sorry to hear this, it must be awful for you. I hope all goes well for the remainder of your pregnancy.

Methe my understanding is as its a chromosomal abnormality which occurs after conception the split may have happened before the abnormality occured.

I may be completely wrong though.

mrsallcock · 03/01/2012 15:07

Thank you for all your messages. Yes you are right the chromosomal abnormality happenend when the split occurred, apart from knowing it was after five days there is no way to know when it happened exactly. We have geneticist in London involved, but yes it is not often you come accross identical twins with one having a problem but not the other. We have surprised and interested our local Dr's.
Saying that I'm petrified I will loose my healthy baby. Started leaking what I believe to be amnio fluid on new years day, went through knickers and panty liner. Local hospital did an ultra sound and baby heart beat was strong and there was some fluid round the baby so we think all is good. I am happy to say I think it has settled down now. Yes I want to be positive for my baby but it is hard not to be anxious, scared that I will loose it as well.

I'm updating, I am 24 weeks this following saturday. I still have very low amnio fluid surrounding the baby, I have an ultra sound every two weeks. When I get to my third trimester our consultant will get the peadiatric Dr to come and see us, our consultant has said there is a possibility the baby girl may not survive as lungs could be too underdeveloped.
