Do big girls have big babies?

Just a comment on the gestational diabetes thread got me thinking...

If you are of larger build or overweight, are you more likely to have a bigger baby?

I thought this to be true but have never seen or heard an "official" line on it.

I'm very small (short and slim) and had ds1 7lb8oz and ds2 8lb5oz. Many of my larger (i.e. taller/bigger framed) friends had much smaller babies, whilst another who is a similar height to me although broader had an 11lb-er.

I think birth weight is genetic (provided the mother is well nourished and not exposing the foetus to anything that may restrict growth e.g. by smoking), unless the mother has uncontrolled GD.

My poor mother had me late in life bless her and i was a hefty 11lb 11oz couldn't find an incubator big enough!!!???? I know so I blame the fact i was 2 weeks overdue hence which contributes to me having big feet size 8 and being tall. my d/d weighed in at 10lb 10oz and 10lb 8oz and they are both tall and thin but solid as they do not look as heavy to carry as they are. I don't know if you are both tall then i think yes !?! right off to bed!!

Charlee · 13/01/2006 05:38

My nan was very thin and gave birth to 3 children.

my uncle 13lb
my other uncle 12lb
and my mom 11lb

so i dont think so!

I was about the right wieght for my height when i had ds and he was only a wee 6lb

hoxtonchick · 13/01/2006 07:31

i was a 12-14 when i got pg with ds & he weighed 7lbs10, and a 16(ish...) when i got pg with dd & she was 6lbs11. i think maternal history is important - my grandma, mum & me all seem to grow relatively small babies (i was 5lbs14), even though we are/were all quite different sizes. i think it's all quite interesting.

Pfer · 13/01/2006 07:51

was a since 6-8 when got pg with ds1 he was 8lb12oz and a size 10 when fell with ds2 he was 8lb1oz.

(nearly back to 10 now ......yahooooooooo!!)

do you know, im reading this thread with interest! im not particularly big, or small for that matter, but ive had four children. with each pregnancy i only gained roughly a stone in weight, lost it immediately after birth and quickly regained my previous body shape. the first three babies were all roughly the same weight, but the fourth was considerably larger than the others, and i was wondering why! the midwife commented that the cord was very fat, and that was why she was so big for me!so it must be other factors that govern the babies weight, rather than mums body weight/shape?

Nemo1977 · 13/01/2006 13:55

not true at all.
I am very overweight[as in around a size 26/28].
My little boy was 9lb 1 oz at 15 days overdue. So if he had been on time would have been around 8lb1oz.
My little girl who is 4 wks was 6lb 14 ozs on her due date. Which is just below average.

pol25 · 13/01/2006 17:20

I was over weight with last baby and am even fatter now, lol with second bubba... My D was only 6lbs10ozs but I did have pre eclampsia and reduced movements etc... originally she was big for size at 27 weeks then just slowed right down...

Distel · 13/01/2006 17:22

I have had 3 babies and I am 16-18. My 1st was 6 . 14, 2nd was 7 .2 and 3rd was 6 . 14.

Kelly1978 · 13/01/2006 17:24

dunno about bigger baby. I had 8lb, 9lb7, 6lb, 6lb7 (smaller two = twins). I'm nearly 6ft. My mother is only 5'4 and both my brother and me were around the 10lb mark. Taller women are statistically more likely to have twins tho.

Mum2OneAndBump · 13/01/2006 17:32

Well i am 5'8 & was 7lb ish when born, Dp is 6'1 & was 5lb when born.

I was size 12 when fell pregnant with my ds, he was 7lb 14oz when born 10 days late.

I was size 14 when fell pregnant this time & am waiting to see what baby weighs keep thinking its gonna be a 10 lb baby as i am mush bigger this time round.......

Potty1 · 13/01/2006 17:35

I'm 5ft 6 and was quite skinny pre kids - mine ranged from 8lb 6 to 10 lbs.

jalopy · 13/01/2006 17:48

I'm 5'6" and petite. My own birth weight was 9lbs. All three of my babies have been nearly 10lb's each.

cranberryjampots · 13/01/2006 18:06

pre pregnancy I was size 10 and 5'3 - dd was born at 39 weeks 8lb9.5 and ds was born at 37 weeks 8lb 12 - no GD with either.

cranberryjampots · 13/01/2006 18:07

meant to add my own birthweight was 6lbs 3 but as part of a set of twins, my sis being 5lb 13

loopyredangel · 14/01/2006 12:59

I'm 5ft 9" was a size 12 but on a huge amount of weight almost 5stone - went to a size 18, DS weighed in at 10lb 9.5oz!!!

Ragtaggle · 14/01/2006 13:09

I'm watching this with interest too. I am five foot five and an average weight but I do tend to put on lots of weight in pregnancy because it's the only time in my life that I don't watch my weight. My last baby was ten pounds and I did wonder if that was because I'd put on three stone and was eating a lot. Having said that my first baby was only seven twelve and I put on four stone that time. I thought maybe my pelvis had grown or something, giving the baby more room to grow!

kate100 · 14/01/2006 13:38

I'm 5'6" and a size 12-14, my boys were 9lb 11oz and 9lb 12oz and the midwife looked shocked both times as I didn't look like I was having a big baby. They weren't fat babies they were long and in the right proportions, my dad is 6' 4" and I think they get their height from him. My birth weight was 8lb 1oz and my mum is only 5' 2".

I have a friend who is 6' 2" and her son was only 7lb.

Gillian76 · 14/01/2006 13:40

SO does it have anything to do with the amount of weight you gain in pregnancy do you think? Or do you just keep all the extra weight for yourself?

beansprout · 14/01/2006 13:47

I'm a 5'4", size 10 and had a 10lb 5oz baby. Didn't put on too much weight, was the classic "all bump" shape. Not all bump as it turned out though as there was quite a bit left behind!!

megandsoph · 14/01/2006 13:50

I was 8 stone before I had dd1 and am only small in height. She was 8.5lb

munz · 14/01/2006 13:55

i'm 5'2 (on a good day) and started off weighing in at 10.5 (shhhhhh!) a size 12 (had managed to loose 1/2 stone b4 getting my BFP) anyhow i've so far put on 18lb. I was 2 weeks early apparently (2nd child - DB was first 5 days early and weighed 7.5lb) and weighed in at 7.5 1/2 lb mum was pretty much the same as me during her PG. DH on the other hand, he was on time (afaik) weighed in at 8lb (first child 2nd was 8.2lb mil also smoked) he's 6'3 and v lanky/skinny (weighs only 13 stone) his Bio dad is the same build as him, and his mum's slightyl taller than me but was lighter in weight. DH was a first child. not sure about her PG thou. so far (at 33 weeks) m/w has said i'm measuring normal - i'm in the grey on chart thing but only just (curve is ok thou)) and I know the baby has the right amount of fluid around him from a scan which was done when I had the crash (approx 24.5 weeks) last chart measured me at 32cm at 30+5. ooh and I know it's a boy.

ate v healthily till 12 weeks (when salad was all I could manage) then had 3 months of 'usual' food incl ifits and junk food, these last 3 months i've tried to level it back out again with fruit/veg

so then what do we recon then?

joanna4 · 14/01/2006 20:25

I was around size 14/16 my two were 9lbs 3oz and 8lbs 12.With first baby I craved fish or ice cubes so i dont think what you eat has bearing on it as with no 2 it was steak and my diet was just meat based for ages and she was smaller.

ShaysMummy · 14/01/2006 23:56

I am five eleven and my first was 9lb 9. My mother is taking great delight in reminding me at every oppertunity that subsequent babies are usually larger!! (I am due in Sept.) (shock)
