Aibu not to test until 10 weeks late?

Dp and I have been ttc since june. Between 27th aug and 5th nov I didn't have a period. Did a test every week willing them to be positive and eventually I came on. I am now 4 days late but don't want to put myself through that again. However do I carry on eating and drinking as normal? It seems silly not to when I might not even be pregnant, but what if I am?

Well, there's only one way to find out......Good luck Smile

PuraVida · 27/12/2011 12:48

Do pregnancy tests even work once you're that far on?

That aside carry on as normal just don't get blotto

Crosshair · 27/12/2011 13:23

Do a test, if neg leave it a week and test again?

catsareevil · 27/12/2011 13:25

If you dont want to test and think that you could be pregnant then the safest thing would be to eat and drink as if you are.

springboksaplenty · 27/12/2011 13:31

I would carry on as nOrmal - I'm sure as you are ttc you're eating healthily enough. I wouldn't test. But it might be a good idea if you find you can't get your mind to stop focussing on it to do the test before you start getting too excited.

Hope you are pg though :)

namechangerbat · 27/12/2011 13:33

Don't test if you don't want to but I would ensure you are taking folic acid and be mindful if you wait that long and you are pregnant it may be stressful trying to get a scan appt in the required slot for nuchal fold measurement should you wish one

Good luck Smile

sprinkles77 · 27/12/2011 13:35

If you waited till 10 weeks late, you could actually be 14 weeks pregnant by dates. Which would make you late for your 12 weeks scan and some other screening tests.

xmasmummytobe · 27/12/2011 16:23

Depends what your pref's are. As sprinkles77 said you could find yourself missing some screening, which is fine if you don't want it but you both need to be sure of that.

I know how you feel, I spent a year ttc, not for this pregnancy though, and felt I'd gained an obsession with peeing on a stick. I had a 10 week cycle once so of course the tests were all negative and I got myself completely wound up.

If you're looking after yourself I guess it's just down to your pref's and whether you can take the suspense! Don't think I could Smile

lisad123 · 27/12/2011 16:28

I would just test. Just once and take that answer as gospel for atleast another week. I would worry about drinking too much if in early pregnancy (or any pregnancy for that matter)

Mulledbee · 27/12/2011 18:13

I've read that after a while a pregnancy test would give a false negative as the HCG levels drop (I think, I'm not a doctor, just going from something I read somewhere). It might be worth finding out about that.

I'd test so I could ensure I had all my 12 week tests. These are needed for dating the pregnancy as well as other things. I couldn't bear not knowing for that long either!

galwaygal · 27/12/2011 19:01

To clarify what mulledbee was saying... After 8 weeks pregnant or so, it is possible for the "hook effect" to occur, where the hcg levels are so high that they cause the test to "malfunction" giving a false negative.

nappyaddict, I can understand you not wanting to get the repeated negatives, but as long as you take your folic acid and continue to eat sensibly then there is no reason to urgently test. Afterall years ago women would miss two periods before they would go to the doctor. If you want the normal antenatal tests though, I think you will have to go through the testing weekly and just accept that most likely it will be negative. (better than hoping and being disappointed), then if you do get a lovely positive you can still get the antenatal care and tests. That's my opinion, but you have to do what is right for you.

nappyaddict · 01/01/2012 10:29

Maybe I could test fortnightly instead of weekly like last time?

I eat healthily, but should I stop drinking alcohol, eating soft or unpasteurised cheese, liver, pate etc?

Xmasmummy how often did you test during your 10 week cycle?

sorry name change, I am xmasmummy, but now still waiting Grin

I went through so many pee sticks that started buying the hospital strip ones off ebay! I was testing once a week.

I got so frustrated with my irregular cycles that I started charting them, that way I would have a very good indication of when I ovulated and actually know when I was late. Technically your not late, as in possibly pregnant if you haven't ovulated in your cycle. It was really good understanding what was going on but knowledge isn't always power, it became a bit of an obsession! I stopped in Sept last year.

If you test weekly, then you don't need to give anything up. I used to convince myself the tests must be false negatives though, up until I started the charting.

nappyaddict · 01/01/2012 10:48

My cycles are irregular too. The last 3 have been 70 days, 27 days and 36 days!

nappyaddict · 01/01/2012 10:56

Oops, just realised my last cycle was 29 days not 36. And there was me thinking I had waited until I was a week late to test and I wouldn't even have been late at that point.

Having an idea of when you are ovulating may help in that case but I wouldn't necessarily advise charting, it's brilliant having that understanding but the best medicine for me was to forget about it all and it worked. I'd go with testing once a week from 5 weeks into your cycle. That way even if you conceived 14 days into your cycle then you'd be 5 weeks pregnant on first test. You can take prenatal vits anyway whilst ttc and if you want to sustain a preg diet and such then you can but if you do have the odd goats cheese and wine fest prior to your BFP then it wouldn't do any damage I'm sure.

I remember with my 10 week cycle I was utterly convinced I was pregnant, about two weeks before I came on I had pains and sore boobs and other weird hormonally stuff. All tests were negative, Dr was unhelpful and I got so upset. Since charting I realised that I'd ovulated, hence all the hormonally symptoms and changes which is why two weeks of all that and I finally came on. There was no conception. We weren't even having sex when I'd ovulated because I thought I was already pregnant. TTC drove me crazy and I mean crazy!

nappyaddict · 01/01/2012 12:33

When you had your 10 week cycle did you wait until you were a week late to test or do it straight away? Was it only after that cycle you started waiting? How long did it take you to conceive?

blackcatsdancing · 01/01/2012 12:37

i'd eat and drink as if pregnant. There are foods which if eaten in early pregnancy can (potentially) cause tremendous problems for the baby. Very rare but can happen.

stillwaitingforbaby · 01/01/2012 13:34

I started testing at 5 weeks in. I was ttc for a year but my relationship broke down possibly because of my obsession with ttc, we were no longer about us and all about making a baby if that makes sense. This time around, new partner, 3 years on and conceived first month of not NOT ttc if that makes sense. I stopped charting in Sept 2010 (I have used charting for ttc and not ttc), decided to forget about my gyne issues and enjoy what I had. We decided to stop using contraceptives in February and we conceived at the end of March this year. Grin

I made a lot of life changes, I had previously been unhappy, worried about my health, working too hard ect. I decided what was important to me and made the changes, I think really made a difference.

minitoot · 01/01/2012 16:47

I didn't test until I thought I'd missed two periods ( am not organised enough to count days in cycles :)). When I went along to the doctor the nurse said I'd come at the right time (aprox 8 weeks), they didn't encourage people to come before that.

Xmasbaby11 · 01/01/2012 17:37

I have a v irregular cycle so I didn't test until I was about 2 weeks late. 10 weeks late seems like a long time to wait.

I found out when I was 7 weeks pregnant. The only thing I would do differently is cut down on drinking and take pregnacare from when TTC.
