Have been prescribed cephalaxin broad spectrum for tooth and uti. But in pain today. Told it's safe. Should I stop taking them?

cefalexin is safe during pregnancy, why would you stop taking them?
if you are in pain you can take paracetamol as well.

Eh gods no. Take them. I had a UTI at 31wks that esculated and gave me contractions. Pethidine and entonox didn't touch the pain...and I spent days in hospital whilst it all calmed down...that's the last thing you want to happen...
FX it goes away...it's miserable being in pain, especially today!

My friend went into labour prematurely at 28 weeks due to an undetected (and therefore untreated) UTI so I'd take the antibiotics.

If it's any reassurance, I've had to take 4 5 day courses of 500mg Cefalexin and been on a daily 250mg prophylactic dose since 24 weeks. Am currently 35 weeks with a very active baby who is growing really well. Although they're a pain the antibiotics certainly don't seem to have caused baby any problems at all. You're better off clearing out the UTI. Try and make sure you get 3 litres of water/squash through you in a day. I know it means you can't stay far from a loo but as a veteran of recurrent UTI clinics it's definitely the best way of clearing them out quickly. Hope you feel better soon.

If your GP knows you are pregnant, then he will have prescribed something safe for you to take. IME, they are extremely cautious about giving medication to pregnant women, so don't worry.

If you are still worried, phone NHS 24, rather than getting advice from unqualified strangers on the internet - stopping a course of antibiotics half way through can make things worse.

Cefalexin is safe in pregnancy (you can get side effects any time you take antibiotics, but not that would specifically harm the baby). As the other posters have said, if you have a UTI take the antibiotics as there is a risk of premature labour. Good luck, hope you feel better soon.

Thanks everyone will persevere. But I have had quite a lot of tummy pain on them which I am worrying about. Can they cause bowel problems or is it uterus?

Probably your bowl, but if it feels like period pains, or the pains are at all rhythmical, then it's worth ringing a MW for reassurance. Antibiotics can be a bit harsh on the tum, so they usually recommend you eat with them if you're not - even a couple of biscuits will help there, though do check what the packet says and check with your doc/MW if you can't find anything about food intake in the packets (it usually tells you if you're not allowed to eat with them).

Can cause bowel problems. Uti can cause lower tummy pain. If you aren't getting on with them you could ask Gp if there is an alternative.

Oeisha · 26/12/2011 10:23

I meant: probably your bowl (but could the the UTI if the pain isn't 'new'). Oh, and if eating with the antiobiotics doesn't help, or the pain isn't relieved by paracetamol then it's probably worth ringing the MW anyway. They will have a better idea whether this is a usual reaction.
Also ring them if the pain's around your upper right bump (round yor liver).
