Just for fun - my mum's theory about timing of labour/birth

My mum has had 5 kids and was talking the other day about being a morning person or a night owl (I'm the former and she's the latter).
With the exception of her first child (who was premature), all of her labours and births were in the evening with the baby being born during the night. She was wondering whether people give birth according to whether they're a morning person or a night owl. Obviously some people have extremely long labours stretching over many days but hers didn't.
Does anyone have any views on this? She's not hard and fast on this view, it just occurred to her from her own experiences.
My own preference would be not to be up all night giving birth, I'd prefer to do it during the day, mostly in the morning when I am most awake. If only we could pick that easily...

I used to be a lark and now a night owl. DS born at 2:50am and DD at 1:26pm. Both quite short labours. Not sure I fit a theory Grin

Haha - my mother has a similar theory about when we were actualy born. I was born at 7.30pm and love the early evening; my sister was born at 2am and is more than slightly nocturnal!

I'll be watching this thread - its an interesting question!!

I'm definitely not a morning person but mostly laboured and gave birth early hours. Sorry.

On the other hand, I was born bang on lunchtime and love food! Xmas Grin

Posted too soon, meant to add that my DS1 was also born at midday and loves food too.

My children are all very early risers Xmas Hmm though and like I said ^ up there, I laboured/birthed early in the day.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 23/12/2011 12:03

Interestingly, all 3 of my labours started at midnight (first niggles). The children were born at 3am the next day, 11 pm and 9:30am.

fhdl34 · 23/12/2011 12:10

lol @ 3wiseboys I should've been born at a mealtime if that's how it works :)
I am a morning person but was born at 10.55pm. I am the only morning person in the family though, everyone else is a nightowl.

Hmm I am generally a daytime person- labour started at 8.30 and dd born 8pm so maybe she is onto something (hope so as dd2 due next month and a repeat on timings would be good).

gothicsanta · 23/12/2011 12:14

I avoided night time labours yeah so perhaps something in it

heartmoonshadow · 24/12/2011 19:17

Dont know if this is relevant or even in anyway answers the question. I am a lark up and about in the morning and DS was born early. What was really weird was that I woke up at 0608 on the dot for about 3 months before I gave birth - I presumed someone on the estate must go to work then. But spookily DS was born at 0608 freaky. I am currently 21 weeks so I will see what happens in the future.

WhyMeWhyNot · 25/12/2011 13:13

My 3 are definately at their best around their times of birth. 18.15....01.45... and 20.35.

Wolfiefan · 25/12/2011 13:17

Thank all that is holy my son is not bouncing off the Walls at 12:35 am when he was born. DD born 4:11 pm and usually getting grumpy tired by then. Oooo I have just worked out that one labour started at 2pm ish and the other 3pm ish!!!

saoirse86 · 26/12/2011 16:30

My twin sister and I were born at 4am, but are definitely afternoon/evening people.

I went into labour at 11pm and had DD at 6.42pm 3 days later. She's an afternoon person, and wakes at about 8.45am.

My sister started labour at about 2am but had emcs at 3pm. Her DD is a proper night owl.

I think we're all bucking the trend here, sorry!

Flisspaps · 26/12/2011 16:33

My mum has babies at breakfast time, lunchtime, tea time and late at night.

Flisspaps · 26/12/2011 16:35

Sent too soon Blush

In reality (as opposed to just-for-fun) as mammals, humans are biologically more likely to give birth at night.

YuleingFanjo · 26/12/2011 16:40

my workmate has a similar theory that if yiu are born in the am then yiu are a morning person ...

my son was born after 1am. I wonder if he will be a morning or night person. I am both, I wake up early and go to bed late.

MummyAbroad · 26/12/2011 16:43

sorry I dont fit the theory, I am a morning person and DS1 was born at 1am. DS2 was a planned cesarian in the morning at 9am, and that suited me much better Smile

Dotty342kids · 26/12/2011 16:48

I went into labour with both of mine at about 6.00 am (I'm a morning person) and gave birth about 6.30pm both times. One of them is an early bird, the other is def going to be more of a night owl!
