Membrane/cervical sweep with high BMI

I'm 40+1 today, saw my midwife and she said if I've not had the baby by next weds (when I'm 41w), she'll come to see me at home, book in an induction for 40+12 (I don't have to have it that day but will need to see hospital that day to discuss alternate plan if I don't have it) and I expected she'd want to do a sweep.
However, she said because of my high BMI, it may be contraindicated so she'll check and let me know next week. I don't actually want a sweep at present but was just wondering what other people's experience was in the same situation as me? I've been under a consultant because of my BMI but this hasn't been mentioned previously.

I have never heard of this. How odd. How high is your BMI? I can't see that it would have any impact on a sweep at all.

ive never heard of high bmi being a factor for a sweep. It is true that in some women with a high bmi that the cervix is unreachable, but then some 'normal' ranging bmi women have high cervix too.
I was a registered midwife, I have not worked as one for about a year and hadnt heard of this, although it is quite possible it has changed within 12 months.

Weird - I've heard it said before on mn that "fat women have an unreachable cervix".

I must be a freak of nature then because I have a high BMI and I can reach my own cervix. I'm not even a pianist. Wink

My BMI was 57 at booking in so very high and at 34+6 I weighed 1kg less than my weight at my booking in appointment so it's probably around about the same now. The hospital actually said I didn't need to go back after that appt as I'd managed my weight so well.
I'm in good pregnancy health, no pre-eclampsia, no GD, no high blood pressure, no SPD, no pregnancy ailments whatsoever - didn't even get morning sickness. I know these things have no relation to sweep but have been very pleased that although I felt labelled with high BMI my pregnancy has, in fact, been trouble free.
I just googled it and couldn't really find anything about it so felt a bit confused.

lol @ alpinepony.

I've never tried to reach my own cervix but I'm not going to start now. They've had trouble doing my smear before, one nurse even told me verbally once that the neck of my cervix had partially collapsed and she only just managed to get a sample. I did mention this at booking in but the comment never appeared on my medical notes anywhere because the midwife checked. All v confusing but it doesn't take much with me :)

just bumping this to see if anyone else can help? Seeing the midwife tomorrow and would like to not go in blind. I wouldn't want to consent to an induction (unless there was a risk) were they not even willing to assess my bishop's score so would like to know the reasoning behind why a sweep may be contraindicated. Any other advice from any quarters would be appreciated. Thanks in advance
