Dp and I had a slip up last week. We have 2 dc already, ds1 is nearly three and ds2 has just turned 2. Dp just got word yesterday he may be on temporary leave from work from after christmas. His boss thinks there MAY be work for him but may not have anything....This is NOT a good time for us...

I hope this might be at least a little reassuring.

DS was a surprise pregnancy. DP and I weren't even living in the same country at the time! And money was (and is) tight. DP's job wasn't really compatible with parenthood (long periods away - I know it works for some, but not what either of us want) so the news of the baby made him effectively loose his main source of income. We certainly wouldn't have planned a baby then.

But DS appeared, he's wonderful, we wouldn't change the timing for anything. We've coped and I'm sure you are more than capable of doing the same Smile

Are your worries about another child mainly financial?

FWIW both of us are currently retraining (at uni as mature students) and our prospects at the end look good (despite the economy!).

ABumDance · 22/12/2011 01:01

Oh Soccer Have you told your DP yet? How far along would that make you? You have plenty of time to make a decision. I didn't want to read and run, hopefully a more knowledgeable MNer will be along to offer you more words of advice. But for now big ((hugs))

Soccermom2 · 22/12/2011 07:12

We only did the deed about 11 days ago. So id only be about 3 weeks. I only tested because i bought 6 cheapie tests and said i had nothing to loose and it was a faint bfp.

Yes my main concern is financial. I had planned on returning to uni in sept and ill have to put that off for another year. We would get an au pair so i dont think the cost goes up (im pretty sure au pairs just charge a flat fee). but uni will be very tough with 3 smallies...

I wouldnt terminate so if i am defo pregnant ill be keeping it.

If college and money wasnt an issue, id be delighted : )

I feel im too young to have 3 kids! im only 28 this year (ok maybe thats not THAT young Blush )

But then again, these things happen and it may work out better as i will get my childrearing done before college and can concentrte on career (in midwifery ironically!)

about to do a test with FMU so wish me luck!

My friend had her second in the middle of her midwifery course. Apparently lots of people on the course got pregnant - handling all those newborns?! They had a tight couple of years but she finished her course and qualified. I wish I'd had my third younger, maybe I wouldn't be quite so tired now!

pinkyp · 22/12/2011 07:35

My friend is 25 and has 3 (youngest 1 and elsedst 4), she thinks it's better to have them young then she can go back to college later

Soccermom2 · 22/12/2011 10:00

Thanks, Im still just taking it all in. I did another test and is bfp but still very faint. Im supposed to be going for a meal tonight with the girls, dont know how im going to lie to them about not drinking...

Your right it will be nice to hve them all young. It will just be hard juggling 3 kids in fulltime college but sure whats one more?!

I think ill go out and get a first response today. the cheapies are known for evaps.

I am due in sept, that will be nice after 2 winter babies!

Sorry I've got to post and run, but might be useful to know that if you're studying full-time you will be eligible for help with childcare - up to 80% of your childcare fees (there's a weekly cap though I think). This has been amazingly helpful for us. But, only if your childminder / nursery / whoever is OFSTED registered - so it's possible an au pair might not actually be the most economical option as most aren't OFSTED registered.

Also, subject to confirmation - a tentative congratulations! Grin

And about tonight - say you're on anti-biotics maybe? Good luck!

Soccermom2 · 22/12/2011 13:09

thank you three feet but im not actually in UK. Where I am there is no help with childcare for students : (

I just did a shops own brand hpt and it is neg...

threefeethighandrising · 22/12/2011 21:58

Oh! How silly of me to just assume you're in the UK, sorry!

How confusing to get conflicting results.

What did the positives look like? Did you see them straight away?

I expect you know this anyway but false negatives are much more common than false positives.

Although can't you get a false positive if you leave the test for a while?

Hope you're OK :)

Soccermom2 · 23/12/2011 16:32

Thanks threefeet.

I havent tested again, i went to local chemist this morning and they had no FR and i dont want to waste my money on anything else so i just left it.

The lines were all very faint but defo there as dp could see them. They all came up within a minute. My boobs are sore but they are always painful around the time my period is due.

Dp is gone to do the shopping so ive warned him to not come home without a FR so will let you know : )

Soccermom2 · 23/12/2011 21:00

Did a FR this evening and it was BFN so I dont think I am upduffed.

Surely that would be BFP before an IC???

OP posts:
Flisspaps · 23/12/2011 21:10

I didn't think false positives were possible though (glad to be shown otherwise though) - might be worth doing another test in a few days, the FR could be a false negative.

Oeisha · 23/12/2011 21:21

False negatives are more common than false positives...I'd be re-testing in a few days with FMU just to rule out fluid levels being the reason for a BFN.

Soccermom2 · 24/12/2011 09:47

I know i didnt think so either...Im just going to leave it now and see what happens. I think my period is due around the 26th/27th.

I have another FR, I might do it tomorrow morning.

OP posts:
MandaHugNKiss · 24/12/2011 09:54

Unless it was a FRER (First Respone Early Result) they're not as sensitive as the IC's... and I've seen many instances of even FRERs not picking up a pregnancy that an IC does.

So I'm agreeing with the false positives are unusual/false negatives much more common people Wink

Soccermom2 · 24/12/2011 10:13

It was just a normal FR. Will try get my hands on another IC today and see if the line is darker than before.

Thank you, Will let you know :)

OP posts:
Oeisha · 24/12/2011 10:34

The darkness of the line is irrelevant on most OTC tests, and causes so much unwarrented panic. A positive is a positive...and I'd say 3 positives is a fairly good indicator!

Soccermom2 · 24/12/2011 18:44

Thanks everyone for the advice, i bought another brand of IC strips today and its bfn so looks like im not pregnant afterall!!!
