Paid Paternity leave

Rah - just a bit of a rant! Just realised that DP won't be entitled to Paternity Pay! He was made redundant in the summer and was lucky enough to find another job straight away (so no break in paying tax etc). However he's not been with current employer long enough to qualify and the state won't pay as he's not been with his current company for 40 weeks!

Just a rant as I know that it's tough shit - just seems unfair that he's always worked yet isn't entitled to a penny!!

Anyone else in this situation? Moan away!

Hi, a friend had that with her husband. In the end he worked extra hours in advance and could take a week-in-lieu and a 2nd week as paid, compassionate leave. Might be worth your DP asking his current employer what they might do. For friend it was a much better financial situation than state paternity pay.

My DH is self-employed so not entitled to anything at all; no paid holidays or anything: if he doesn't work, he doesn't get paid! At least your husband can take annual leave (if he has any left/available)!! TBH, i do the payroll at work, and men at ours rarely take paid paternity leave even when they are entitled to it because the pay is so low relative to their normal salaries. They always save annual leave instead to take after the birth.

Same as Ellypoo my dp is self employed. We knew when we got pregnant that he can't get pai if he takes time off so we've budgeted fir it.

I feel for those who are self employed too - just seems so unfair that we pay our taxes our whole lives and can't claim a penny! Oh well, never mind!

Perhaps suggest he takes it as holiday?

NorthernGirlie · 22/12/2011 13:06

Think it will be unpaid leave Tewi - he's not been there long enough to earn many holidays!

Oh no! I guess there is nothing for it but to save as much as you can then - sympathies though it's really tough.

I'm the same as a couple of other posters, my DH is self employed so we budgeted in him taking 2 weeks off unpaid starting when I go into labour as employees would do with normal paternity. It's just one of those things I'm afraid
