stabbing pain in the bum...

just this evening I've developed a horrible stabbing pain that feels like it's in my rectum/anus. It was so sharp when I was driving home just now that I was worried I was going into labour or something serious was happening.

Now at home on all fours with bum in air, which seems to relieve it. I spoke to a MW who said maybe constipation or SPD - she wasn't too worried, so I've stopped panicking so much.

I'm nearly 32 weeks and have been suffering with SPD for ages in this and previous pregnancy, but never had this pain before, which is why I was alarmed. My SPD/PGP is mainly at the front of the pelvis. My back and sacroiliac joints haven't been bad this pregnancy. Also, not at all constipated so far, and haven't been blessed with piles yet, so don't think it's that. And not having any kind of BH or contractions either. And I have had stabbing pains round cervix, which I suspect is the baby having a stretch. just not in my poor bum before.

Please can someone tell me it's normal to feel like your arse is being stabbed with a knitting needle in the 3rd trimester? It's driving me mad but if it's 'normal' at least I can just add it to the list of pregnancy indignities. And is there anything that might relieve it?

I've had this, but I have had bowel surgery and a third degree tear in previous labour so I thought it might be due to baby jabbing nerves/scar tissue. I do find it causes no trouble and soon goes, often after doing a no.2.

39+6 I get this and usually find a massive fart passing wind sorts things out. BlushGrin

Yes its usually caused by pressure in this area, so usually wind, or needing the toilet. I had this pain all the way through my labour with DS, and on that occasion it was pressure from him! Try not to worry, might be worth taking some lactulose or peppermint tea to see if it relieves it?

thank you, I'm glad it's not just me. It did get better after a night's sleep (I say that but was up about once an hour to go for a wee...seem to remember this is good practice for when baby is born and I'll have to feed all night long). Was just quite scary, kept expecting rectal bleeding/baby being born early out of bum!

Welcome to sciatica!

That could well be what's causing your pain - I started with it a couple of weeks ago and it's still rumbling on though thanks to hot water bottles and pilates it's eased up a bit.

I should say, I'm not a doctor or midwife, but what you're describing sounds very much like my symptoms which were diagnosed at sciatica. There's not much that can be done, other than to keep mobile and try to excersise - hope it gets better soon!
