I got lots of stuff on ebay, gumtree etc. The only thing I bought brand new was the pram, and only because mil paid for it. And it's not because we had to neither. My best buy was the grace sweetpeace soother which was £170 in babiesrus at the time and i got it for £65 off ebay :) Baby stuff gets used for such a small period of time that even second hand, a lot are in new condition. I just like getting a good bargain x

PeahenTailFeathers · 20/12/2011 16:03

Oh, I would definitely recommend this! Almost everything I've bought for my little bump has been off eBay and there are some incredible bargains to be had (my best buy was a Silver Cross pram/pushchair with Classic chassis in immaculate, almost unused condition £55 buy it now). There are also gorgeous hand-knitted cardigans etc to be had for next to nothing and lovely unused baby outfits and sets at half the shop price or less. Happy bidding and buying!

farfallarocks · 20/12/2011 16:05

I would an ebay baby, much easier than all this TTC stuff Wink

naturalbaby · 20/12/2011 16:06

i've bought and sold loads of baby stuff on ebay. do your research and check stuff out in shops so you know what you're getting. why pay full price when you can get it good as new for a fraction of the price?

Oeisha · 20/12/2011 16:12

If you're going 2nd hand, the only things I wouldn't get off ebay is matresses! I've also held off on the real nappies for now as I haven't yet decided on the brand. Have a few different ones to try...but may well be going back on once I know what kind of a nappy wearer she is!
You could do what I did and sneek to John Lewis for a nursery advisor session and seek their opinions and then just keep hunting ebay for stuff...got my baby bjorn carrier for about £28 2nd hand and 'cos the previous owner didn't like it, it basically hasn't been used (but was recommended to me by John Lewis as I have back issues). MIL and FIL did cot. Parents did pram and both insisted on new, so I didn't have that to worry about either.

My MiL has bought us a lot of stuff at a nearly new sale & I'm going to inspect it all at Christmas - she also got a cot from neighbours who needed to re-home one in a hurry, but I think we'll get a new mattress for it, I wouldn't want to use a second-hand bedding or mattress.

The only major thing we plan to get brand new is the buggy/car seat. Still need to get a changing table, I want to get one of the tray ones you rest on top of a cot and a friend of mine said she'd got one of those from eBay for £20.

blushingmare · 20/12/2011 16:39

Think it's a fab idea. I think you're recommended to get a new car seat though, in case a second hand one has ever been involved in an accident.

Oeisha · 20/12/2011 16:47

That was the other item I was thinking about blushing! Knew there was another one...

junglebums · 20/12/2011 17:03

We got some brilliant bargains from eBay, including a mamas and papas cot, a jumperoo and loads of clothes. Lots of items are used for such a short amount of time that it really is worth buying them second hand.

ShesAStar · 20/12/2011 17:13

We bought all brand new for my DS and ended up selling it all on eBay for next to nothing. Never again! My current bump has had everything bought from eBay except a few special baby grows and hats. My best buy was a cradle from Mother Care that is like new for twenty pounds. I am using the mattress it came with as it is like new, no marks, stains or anything else.

xmasmummytobe · 20/12/2011 17:37

We've been really lucky and not spent a penny of our own money pretty much. We've been given loads of things new and second hand as gifts from friends and bought things new and second hand (finds from Ebay) with money given by relatives. We would have been able to afford things ourselves but this is first Grandchild on both sides and people have been so good to us. Grin I consider us very lucky.

xmasmummytobe · 20/12/2011 17:38

Sorry rambled on, We got a beautiful, barley used SilverCross Sleepover Classic from Ebay. Cost £100 to us in perfect condition but is nearly a £600 pram bought new.

Mum2be79 · 20/12/2011 17:42

I got a silvercross classic/linear (not sure of brand name!) with car seat from e-bay back in May when I was 7 weeks pregnant for £64.it had been used for only 6 months and was/is in ultra-excellent condition. the only sign that it's used is on the wheels themselves.

HidingInTheUndergrowth · 20/12/2011 18:17

I have got loads of stuff from ebay and am really rather chuffed with my bargains as I had budgeted for buying all new stuff so ended up with much better things for loads cheaper.

I got the bedside cot I had really wanted but decided I couldn't afford for £30 and about £80 worth of reuable nappies for £10. Also got loads of vests and some other nice bits.

There are a few bits that I wouldn't get from ebay, cot mattress as Oeisha said and also MiL is buying us a baby carrier new as I have heard of there being cases of dodgy ones sold with badly made clasps on ebay and as we plan on using it a lot I figure it's worth spending the money to know the little one will be secure.

babybouncer · 20/12/2011 18:19

Babies have stuff for such a short amount of time that second hand is brilliant and often barely used. I went to an NCT Nearly New Sale (I volunteered to help at the sale so got into the pre-sale) and spent around £150 on well over £500 worth of stuff including baby bouncers, cot, change table, babybjorn, sleeping bags and so much more (we filled the car!). As well as brilliant bargains, it also meant that when somethings were totally wrong, I could replace them with something better without guilt. For example, i spent £4 on a Mamas and Papas Lottie the Ladybird baby gym that was beautiful but not washable or wipeable and took up too much room and if I'd spent the full price on it I'd never have felt able to get rid of it!

Also, look at clothing etc in supermarkets - when they grow out of things in just a few weeks it needs to be cheap!

JambalayaWarmMincePie · 20/12/2011 18:24

Can't believe how many people have had eBay silvercross bargains - mine was a brand new ebony sleeplover/classic chassis, and all the extras, plus the matching car seat and parasol etc, around £750 worth, in total - paid just £100. Grin

It's the only thing I've bought so far (due in April) and I bought it at 9 weeks, but it was such an unbelievable bargain! Smile

justhayley · 21/12/2011 18:54

Grin yay thanks all, thought I might yet some "no you can't possibly get a baby 2nd hand things" responses Smile
Def going to look buy the pram Iv seen then, fell in love with it in mamas & papas but couldn't really justify spending over £700. Agree that the mattress should be new, never thought about looking for clothes on there to be honest - good idea.

Also where do we stand on 2nd hand breast pumps?

OP posts:
naturalbaby · 21/12/2011 19:42

there are breast pumps and bottle for sale on ebay so people must think they're o.k i have a avent hand pump i'm thinking of selling as they seem to sell well. if they're clean and sterilised then it can't be a problem can it?

Oeisha · 21/12/2011 20:15

I wouldn't personally get a 2nd hand brest pump as steralising (with anything you could get/use at home) isn't guaranteed to get rid of everything. But I know Mums that have and nowt's happened. If worried though look for "closed system" pumps, as the milk only comes into contact with replcable parts. They usually say on them whether they're "single" or "multiple" use apparently. Also, talk to MW/local NCT as they often have ones you can hire or at least try before you buy..?

HidingInTheUndergrowth · 21/12/2011 20:45

I've just got a second hand electric pump from eBay. I figured it meant that I could have a go at expressing but if it didn't work out I hadn't spent a small fortune.

I have heard people speak about the sterilising issue and can understand why some people may prefer to buy new in this case but I think I am rather less worried about the whole keeping everything sterile business then many so it doesn't bother me particularly.

bunnygirl80 · 21/12/2011 21:02

I got the most of our big stuff off ebay. Pram and moses basket were both barely used and less than half the price they would have been brand new. I also got lucky in that I had my DS about 9mths after a close friend had her DD, so she passed on alot of equipment to us as it got outgrown, so we had her swing, jumperoo, and bumbo. I did buy all DS's clothes new though, as I enjoyed the excitement of going shopping for him.....I'm just too tight to spend huge amounts of money on him Grin

I also got a breast pump from ebay - I put it through the dishwasher on a high temp and then sterilised it about 3 times before I used it. It came with some spare parts still in the original packaging, so I used those in preference to the bits that had already been used by the previous owner where I could. There were lots and lots on ebay that were barely used, because I think so many people buy them then are unsuccessful with expressing, so they never see more than a couple of weeks use.
