Excess acid?

Hello, just after a bit of advice please.

I have a burning sensation in my stomach, is this excess acid? Sometimes I get what I think is heartburn where the burning rises up to my chest. I am taking Rennie when it gets bad but they don't cure it,they just seem to take the edge off.

I am only eating bland foods at the moment due to MS as the thought of spicy or citrus foods is not good!

Has anyone experienced this and what did you do/take to ease it? I'm 9 weeks pregnant.

Thank you in advance! :)

Sounds like acid to me. Trying drinking a glass of milk. The doctor prescribed me gaviscon in peppermint (which was vile and I couldn't take) and aniseed (better for me); neither worked that well and I found the best bet was to either drink milk or eat plain mcflurries. I also stuck to very bland food and tried to avoid bending over. Or sprite zero worked for me although I never understood why but I've heard others it worked for as well so I didn't feel that crazy.
You'll be able to get the doctor to prescribe gaviscon (you could ask if they'll prescribe rennies as well) so you don't have to pay for it so at least it isn't hurting your purse as well as your gut.

Thank you, will try milk and Sprite (but not together!!)

I'm not seeing my GP until the new year now so may buy some Gaviscon to keep me going until then. I keep forgetting we can get free prescriptions, I keep paying out for my MS tablets!

I find a spoonful or two of manuka honey(high strength) effective for excess acid. I have found it as effective as Zantac which I've taken when not preggie.

I second the Manuka honey! It's amazing stuff. Ideally take it with food rather than a drink, so it travels all the way through your digestive track. Spending as much time upright after eating also helps.

I've tried a mix of different remedies but the best I've found is tesco or boots own brand indigestion and heartburn tablets, fruit flavoured or peppermint best. I just chew one of these chalky tablets when it gets bad.

My heartburn was bad during the first trimester, then eased off till the start of my third trimester. During the NCT course I attended they explained that the reason we feel heartburn and acidy stomach so much more in pregnancy is because the hormones make the muscle that holds your stomach closed relax and stay open more. I didn't know that but once I did it made me feel reassured and I understood that nothing I did would make it go away but by neutralising the acid with various remedies helped when it was bad.

Tried drinking milk but it must have curdled or something as it didn't stay down. :(

Have bought Sprite and Gaviscon today, the Sprite definitely works short term so I'll drink that during the day.

The Gaviscon I can feel working all the way down, total bliss! Also it seems to work for longer so I shall take that at night.

Thank you all for your suggestions! :)

Glad the gaviscon has worked for you, if you ring your docs and tell them over the phone, they'll probably just write you a prescription so you can get a huge bottle for free!

My dr got a bit shitty with me when I asked for Gaviscon on prescription Sad DP said screw him, get what I can if I need it! I got the Gaviscon in the end Xmas Smile

Ask your doctor for Omeprazole (not sure on spelling). I suffered this throughout (am 38 weeks + 2!!!) and one tablet a day means I no longer suffer from it - don't even need to take gaviscon.

Oh ...

and to 'prove' an old wives tale 'correct' (for me at least!) my baby has TONS of hair!!!!

yummicheddars · 20/12/2011 12:03

To second the old wives tale, right for me to! My DS1 I had awful heartburn..ended up being born with a head full of beautiful white blonde hair :)

I'm 34 weeks and have been suffering with the worst heartburn/reflux since 20 weeks. It got so bad that I couldn't sleep at night and I had lots of knock down symptoms due to poor sleep. My GP put me in Omeprazole which I only need to take once every 2 or 3 days. It's a miracle drug! All gone and I sleep much better which in turns has improved my health in general. I'm not one to take medication if there's no need, especially in pregnancy, but Omeprazole is very safe and i can't recommend it highly enough.
