I had gestational diabetes - although no one ever told me at the time! I never took a glucose intolerance test but 2 different people have told me on two separate occasions during my current pregnancy that i had it. Apparently its on my notes somewhere!!

Surely i would have had to have taken the test for them to have diagnosed me??

Any advice? Did i have it and therefore more likely to have it this time?

that's all I can say, no experience to offer.

did they find it in a urine test?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 10/01/2006 20:44

Sorry to hear this MM. Im afraid i know little about this

Hunker is the lady for you

Mandymoo · 10/01/2006 20:46

I had an appt to see my consultant last week. I thought it was because i had problems with the placenta last time but they wanted to see me because of the gestational diabetes!! I had protein in my wee once towards the end last time and high blood pressure in the last week of my last pregnancy.

Consulatant didnt say whether there was anything in my wee this time round to point towards GD (i had blood in my wee and thats being sorted now)

MM, I think I had it in my first pregnancy too, but it was never really picked up - DS was 8lb 10oz, which is a relatively big baby for someone my build.

I had a GTT because I have polycystic ovarian syndrome which makes me more likely to get diabetes anyway, and one midwife said my sugars were a bit high, then a fortnight later another midwife said they weren't. However, the hospital have now lost my notes from that pregnancy, so I can't check.

This time round (I'm 39+3 today) I asked about having a GTT again at 28 weeks because I'd had one last time and also because I had loads of diabetes symptoms - I was waking in the night to drink a couple of pints of water, was totally shattered, breathless and looked pasty and ill. I felt MUCH worse than when I was pg with DS, really, really ill.

Started eating more sensibly (I'd been eating relatively well, but because I'd been feeling so tired, I had been giving myself sugar boosts mid-afternoon - you know, a soft drink here, a chocolate bar there, etc, etc) and measuring my blood sugars (isn't hard and doesn't hurt, just takes a bit of getting used to - well, it does if you're me and can't remember things from one minute to the next - kept having to write notes to remind myself to test - lol!) and felt heaps better within a few days.

It does sound strange that you didn't have the GTT and they're saying you did have GD though - can't say whether you did have it or not, obv, but definitely question them again about it. How many weeks pregnant are you? The GTT's done about 28 weeks. If you did have it last time, I think you are more likely to have it again, but only a small percentage of women need to take insulin to manage it - the vast majority are diet-controlled.

Miaou · 10/01/2006 20:58

The mw's kept threatening to send me for a GTT test - during all three of my pgs - as I always had sugar in my urine - it seems my body doesn't deal well with it during pregnancy! Always managed to avoid GTTs though by the skin of my teeth.

Sorry, that was totally irrelevant. I'm in the mood to talk

Mandymoo · 10/01/2006 21:06

I'm almost 24 weeks now and am seeing mw tomorrow so will ask her about it then. Trouble is, i have a liking for the odd chocolate bar or seven so i've kind of convinced myself that i've given myself gd!!!

I eat a lot of fruit too - maybe i should cut down to just one bar a day!

I don't see how you would have had gestational diabetes without having a test. I had it and there was regular traces of sugar and baby measuring large for dates. I just don't beleive you could have it and not know.
I know some people can control it with diet.
I would make sure they did the proper tests this time.

Mandymoo · 10/01/2006 21:22

Thats the thing - i never had the test yet its in my notes and its only been this pregnancy that i've known anything about it! I had dd 3 years ago!

OP posts:
heavenis · 10/01/2006 21:30

They must have got your notes mixed up. When your dd was born they would have tested blood sugar levels too.
I don't know about people who can control with diet but you have to do another glucose intolerance test about 6 wks later to make sure you haven't develope diabetes. even when that is clear they tell you that you should have one again in 10yrs time.
I don't think you could have it and not know this info.
I would insist you had the test this time.
If you have had it once your more likely to have it again.

hunkermunker · 10/01/2006 21:34

I was told that if I didn't need insulin, I wouldn't need to be tested again 6 weeks after the baby's born.

Does seem strange this, MM. Usually if women have gestational diabetes, they get to be told (although I suppose I wasn't really told much last time).

heavenis · 10/01/2006 21:39

I wasn't sure about people who didn't have to use insulin. I did have too. But doesn't everyone have the same test to start with.

hunkermunker · 10/01/2006 21:40

Yes, although some drink glucose powder mix thingy and some drink Lucozade. Same result though.

amanada · 10/01/2006 22:01

I've got a mini GTT next wed as I had GD last time - I was told the GTT was automatic cos of history and in fact the appt was booked in about Sept.
Did diet control last time and apart from remembering to do the finger prick tests it was ok (used to set alarm on mobile to remind me)
Have you been v thirsty? Hunkers description seems v. familiar, especially taking 2 pints of water to bed each night!
Seems extremely unlikely that they wouldn't have told you last time - more like a notes mix up? But I'd insist on the test and then you'll know for sure.

Mandymoo · 10/01/2006 22:03

thanks all - will talk to mw tomorrow and think i will insist on the test - i just want to know one way or the other. Seems strange that its on my notes but that i was never tested for it. If it was just a case of admin error then thats pretty crap imo.

What di your midwife say ?

SoupDragon · 12/01/2006 10:58

HM, I didn't need insulin or any regular blood prick tests with DS2 and I had a repeat GTT 6 weeks after the birth (which was normal). I guess it depends on your health authority.

Mandymoo · 12/01/2006 20:14

Hi all - well, I saw a midwife yesterday (not my normal one) and she said that because i didnt take the GTT during my last pregnancy there is NO WAY that i could have been diagnosed as having gestational diabetes - so it was just an admin error!!! Great!

My urine was fine this time, no blood or anything, baby is right size, baby's heartrate if normal, my blood pressure is normal and i feel ok!

So, another trauma bypassed!!!!!

Thanks for your replies XX

Blimey MM, what a hassle. Don't want to worry you, but is worth pressing for a GTT. My sister's was positive but idiot locum consultant who didn't really speak English insisted it was negative. Sister knew she was at risk, as she has polycystic ovary syndrome, so asked at every appointment. Eventually a bright student midwife actually checked and there it was, a postive test four weeks previously. It was all fine in the end, thank heavens, but it is worth checking again as they can get these things wrong, and if you did develop GDD it needs to be monitored.

Glad to hear you are well. My sister did actually feel ill so as long as you don't it's probably fine.

Mandymoo · 12/01/2006 20:27

er.......................... now i'm worried again!!!!

Don't worry you didn't have a test last time, you don't have sugar in your urine, baby is measuring correct for dates.
