Sounds like SPD unfortunately: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphysis_pubis_dysfunction

StellaAndFries · 13/12/2011 21:50

I was about to say that it sounds like SPD, I'd contact your midwife as they can give you some help. I had to wear a pelvic support and use crutches whilst pregnant with dd2 and again with dd3.

Llareggub · 13/12/2011 21:53

I had this, and there a few things you can do to try and minimise the pain. First of all, make sure you keep your legs together when you get out of bed/cars and wear flat shoes. I found that my second pregnancy was easier and I think it is because I kept active; in my first I lolled around quite a bit but don't overdo it, obviously!

exexpat · 13/12/2011 21:54

I had it too, but not bad enough to need crutches. Had to give up cycling, and basically not overdo things, as it was always worse if I'd been rushing around trying to do too much. But yes, good idea to ask midwife/GP for advice.

MustControlMincepieOfDeath · 13/12/2011 21:54

Keep your knees together as much as poss, be very careful turning over in bed and going up and down stairs.

Go and see your GP and get a physiotherapist referral - I had a slightly wonky Shock pelvis, and the physio did some manipulation which helped. She also gave me some exercises to do and a support belt to use when walking.

Oh, and be extra careful if you have any internal exams or sweeps later on - mine was brought back on with a vengeance at 41 weeks when I had a sweep - do not under any circumstances assume the 'smear test' position. I was in chuffing agony afterwards.

exexpat · 13/12/2011 21:56

x-posts with Llareggub with opposite advice! Basically, whatever you do that makes it worse, stop!

Megastar · 13/12/2011 21:56

Yes really sorry but agree with above, I had it and it means you will have to take it easier than planned, but doesn't always end up meaning crutches, dont panic. I found the support from the hospital was awful and uncomfortable and invested in one from mothercare which helped alot. Ask midwife who can give more advice. Good luck

morethemerrier · 13/12/2011 21:59

I agree it sounds like spd,The pelvic partnership have a great website with plenty of advice, speak to your midwife or GP about being referred to a physio.

I have had it in my last three pregnancies, not fun at all!

feekerry · 14/12/2011 08:32

Oh crap okay thanks. I've been quite active lugging things about at the yard so that prob doesn't help plus I always cross my legs. Weird tho as it doesn't feel like pelvis, literally right in between my legs but feels like bone pain rather than muscle. Oh the joy.

feekery i felt like I had been on a long bike ride and had saddle sore (from about 23 weeks). MW said spd and to google exercises and if it's no better at my next appointment she will give me a support belt Hmm needless to say it has got worse and is now really quite sore when i turn over in bed etc. I am not holding much hope out for a physio referral but I am going to ask for one next week. I think I might just buy a support belt myself though as I have heard a few people say that the ones from mothercare are better.

MustControlMincepieOfDeath · 14/12/2011 10:40

feekerry definitely stop lugging things around!

I didn't have mine constantly throughout my pregnancy, it would come and go depending on my level of activity so I used it as an excuse to laze around one of the main things is to keep your knees together, especially when going up/down stairs Hmm , getting in and out of cars and turning over in bed

ciwi I would ask for a referral ASAP, I was about 28 weeks when mine started and I saw the physio really quickly (within a week), I think they fast tracked due to the pregnancy

feekerry · 14/12/2011 11:48

I've had literally zero aches and pains up until this appeared yesterday so thought i'd be okay. At least its nearly xmas and I have some easy time coming up. Does paracetamol help with the pain or not?

OP posts:
MustControlMincepieOfDeath · 14/12/2011 12:47

Try paracetamol, I think you might be able to get codeine from your GP (not sure though), tens machine might help?

Good luck with it
