Heartburn - what can I eat to soothe it?

All the advice says avoid, avoid, avoid, but it's killing me! Despite taking shares out in gaviscon nothing helps! What did you eat that made it more bearable?

I have found milk easing it whenever I eat....xx

Sounds weird, but LoveHeart sweets - they really really work!

Summat to do with the bicarb in them.

AKP79 · 13/12/2011 17:09

And refresher sweets!

Missgiraffe1 · 13/12/2011 17:28

Glad you posted this karate. All sorts of things are giving me heartburn these days - some unexpectedly - so it's not as easy as simply avoiding them. Milk and Gaviscon work for me, but only temporarily. And I can't slouch or lie down for ages after eating anything. Will definitely be giving the refreshers and love hearts a go though! How lovely - sweets for medicinal purposes! Smile

Plain mcflurries, milk and sprite (zero or full fat), that's what works for me.

wahwahwah · 13/12/2011 17:30

Yoghurt and not bending over to tie your shoelaces.

ZuleikaJambiere · 13/12/2011 18:04

Agree with dairy, and also things that are plainish and starchy (like risotto). And a cup of peppermint tea after eating. A glass of water on an empty stomach is the worst thing, I find

SausageWrappedInBaconSmuggler · 13/12/2011 18:05

Milk or ice cream is pretty good for me though for some reason yoghurt makes it worse.

SecretSanta233 · 13/12/2011 18:06

Hot hot to milk.....amazing stuff.

kiki22 · 13/12/2011 18:20

Milk and activia yoghurt

Fruit rennies, safe in pregnancy, can have up to 16 a day, chewable, they have been my saviour!..

karatekimmi · 13/12/2011 18:31

Thanks, glad I get an excuse to eat sweets! I'll start hitting the diary section of the supermarket! Smile

Settlers Tums for me - the fruity ones. Just a word of warning for heartburn sufferers - I had it so badly during labour that it was the worst thing about it. Couldn't concentrate on pushing. Strangely couldn't seem to tell the midwife either! I'll be taking gaviscon in my case this time! Started last night for me - only 11.5 wks. Maybe just a coincidence?

milk makes it better short term, but the stomach will react by making even more acid, so it only works for 30 mins to 1 hour.

Avoid fresh bread or anything with yeast at all cost. If you want to eat bread, it´s best stale and toasted.

I saw a gastroenterologist as mine was so bad it was burning away my oesphagus...This was his advice.

Dairy SEEMS to help, but it is best to eat very light, easily digested food, such as boiled vegetables (carrots, peas), plain chicken or fish (not fried) baked or mashed potato (watch the butter) and plain rice.

Coldcuppacoffee · 13/12/2011 20:04

I've had to completely change my eating habits:
Drink a pint of milk on waking, don't have breakfast until about 11am. Whatever I eat, stop at seven and go to bed at eleven. Really strict about this.
No tomatoes, citrus, rich foods. Dinner is simple, fresh veg.

If I do get heartburn in the night, sit up and breathe until it goes, or sleep sitting up. Or sit on side of bed, put hands behind me and stretch up to make space for stomach.

It went away after baby was born last time. Hoping it does the same again.

It's boring and christmas is going to be crap for food but I'll make up for it next year.

Clear it with your GP or midwife but I was advised Zantac was safe towards the end of my last pregnancy. I had awful heartburn and by the end I found it unbearable. Gaviscon did nothing and I took so much it made me sick.

Zantac was like a gift from God.

GlaikitFizzEggNog · 13/12/2011 21:12

Ready made mustard straight from the fridge!

GlaikitFizzEggNog · 13/12/2011 21:13

Custard not mustard!!

GlaikitFizzEggNog · 13/12/2011 21:15

Oh I also got ranitidine towards the end (I think zantac is the trade name) fab stuff!

AllIWant85 · 13/12/2011 21:21

Grin at mustard!! I was thinking surely not, that's gotta hurt.

You have just made a grumpy pregnant woman chuckle, thank you!
