Was that a mc?

I'm 6-7 weeks and had a scan at the EPU last monday, everything seemed fine, heartbeat seen etc. Then last night i felt a sharp localised pain and later there was blood, and not just a bit of spotting, enough to take a while to clean up. No blood overnight or so far today. No other pains or cramping.

I'm due for another scan on the 19th anyway, but just wondered whether if this was a miscarriage would it be over so quickly?

I had a mmc in September, and no problems with my dd two years ago so have no reference to go by. I've been having early scans at the EPU as I get virtually no symptoms of pregnancy and was unaware of the mc earlier this year until the 12 week scan so was initially referred by the doctor.

Any thoughts?

Obviously I can't tell you whether it was a mc or not - but , if you were to mc at 6-7 weeks there would be more blood (and pain) than with a normal period.

I very much hope it was just one of those things and not a mc, best of luck to you! :)

I have had numerous miscs and not all of them were worse or heavier than a period.
How are you now? Are you still bleeding, any pain?

Every woman and every pregnancy can miscarry differently. If you had enough blood that it took a while to clean up regardless of whether you've continued to bleed or had pain, then there is a possibility you've miscarried or there is a complication. Of course it could be completely normal and the pregnancy could be fine.

Without a scan there is no way of telling if you've miscarried and even then if the pregnancy is still viable a scan can't confirm if you will go on to miscarry unless there is an obvious issue.

I'm lucky to have a great EPAU at my local hospital. Our A&E department will also scan any pregnant woman who has had bleeding regardless of how early.

What you do depends on how you feel about the situation. I was nervous as hell in my first trimester and by 13 weeks I had had 4 scans. I have friends who've miscarried and preferred not to be scanned on the basis of, it already is what it is and no rush to find out. Don't wind yourself thinking about what may have happened if you are worried contact a Dr, either out of hours GP or A & E. Depending on your area / hospital may depend on how they deal with what's happened.

I'm of the there's nothing I can do about it if it was an mc - what will be, will be.

Still no pain, or bleeding. Feeling a bit sick if anything, but that's just nerves.

Just thought that an mc would take a few days to go through completely, i just seem to have gone from one extreme to another.

Oh, and thanks for replying so quickly

Completely understand being in the what will be will be camp, everyone feels differently about these things.

Fingers crossed for you, I hope you get good news at the scan on the 19th.

When I was pregnant with my ds (8) I had a sudden sharp pain and a gush of bright red blood which lasted about 5-10mins. This happen 4 times twice in the the first trimester, once in the second and about 2weeks before I gave birth. Nothing was wrong with my ds and the doctor said it was cysts bursting, located outside the womb luckily. So far with my current pregnancy, 13 weeks, I haven't had the same symptoms. It was scary but getting scanned ASAP put the mind at ease and usually the doctor will find out exactly what is happening.

I hope all is well with your pregnancy, I advise you to go for an emergency scan as soon as. The 19th is over a week away...

Were there any clots? IME you know when it's a mc because of the size of the clots and the pain. If it was just a big bleed with no clots then things may still be ok, but obviously you need a scan either way. Hope everything is ok.

toomuchtooyoung · 10/12/2011 12:14

Nothing that looked like an obvious clot, but then again nothing to compare it to. It was mostly bright red blood with a few specs of something darker. But would a mc be over within 3 hours, or would it take a bit longer?

Have phoned my EPU at Queen Charlottes, closed, and they refer you to see GP or A&E anyway, neither of which is an option. Will phone Monday to see if I can get earlier appointment.

Thanks for being there guys :-)
