Advice Please - Early Scan?

Hello,

I am new here, but thought I'd ask a little advice. I will be 10 weeks pregnant on Saturday and for the last two days my morning (all day) sickness has just completely disappeared. I have also had some mild-to-moderate cramping and lower backache. No bleeding though.

I rang the Early Pregnancy Unit and the doctor there said they would scan me tomorrow, but I had to get a referral from my GP first.

I went down to the GP this morning. He gave me a pregnancy test and examined me and was absolutely adamant that there is nothing to worry about. He said surely I was happy to not be having morning sickness anymore.

Anway, my questions is this: I am really starting to feel like I'm wasting everyone's time. My boyfriend is really supportive and keeps telling me that if I'm worried, we should check it out, but my GP was really dismissive and I feel like a bit of a time-waster.

What would any of you do in this position? I have a scan appointment at 8.50am tomorrow morning, but am worried the staff there will equally think I'm worrying over nothing.

Sorry, this has turned into a bit of a long post....

Thanks in advance for any advice!

FWIW for some women cramping and backache is all a normal part of early pregnancy as the uterus and surrounding organs all start to move, but it never hurts to check out something you're worried about :)

Go for the scan. If you're still cramping over the weekend then you'll be kicking yourself wishing that you'd gone, if only to put your mind at rest. You're not wasting anyone's time, it's what the EPU is there for.

Does your GP know that you can get a +test even if the pregnancy has failed (which may well not have happened to you, if you're not bleeding) and I don't know what an examination at 10 weeks would have shown him (I'm assuming you meant an abdominal examination rather than an internal) because even MWs don't bother with any kind of abdominal exam until you're about 20-something weeks along. And the morning sickness comment was Hmm as well -totally unnecessary (and again, does the GP not realise that you can have MS all through pregnancy and it can go and then sneak up on you just when you think you're over it!)

Agree with Fliss, go for the scan, you are not wasting anyone's time. It's your baby and very precious. It would be silly to not go just because your GP was dismissive.

Hope it goes well for you, let us know how you get on.

Thank you both very much for your advice. :) It really helps.

Fliss, you're absolutely right - I would probably kick myself over the weekend and at least this will hopefully put my mind at rest. Oh, and it was just an abdominal examination.

Julie - I will pop a post on here about how I get on tomorrow. Hopefully, will be good news.

Thanks again both of you. :)

Thinking of you, hope you have nothing to worry about. But you're not wasting anyone's time - you know that 'tax' thing that you pay? Well, this is what it's for!

Hi grizzly,

Cramping as i found out is pretty normal.

So long as it doesn't take your breath and there is no bleeding then i was told all is normal.

But...go for the scan, if they are willing then go, it will put your mind at rest and stop you worrying!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 08/12/2011 12:21

Agree with Fliss again, there is no way that your GP can tell from a pregnancy test and an abdominal whether everything is ok.

Hope it is just normal end of morning sickness and twinges, if its not though there is support here and here.

littlegrizzly · 08/12/2011 12:23

Thank you all very much. :) I will post in the morning after the scan and let you know what happened.

Thanks again.

Hi there, I will also be 10 weeks on Saturday and have felt much better for the first time in ages today. I have also developed back ache over the past two days and have had some stomach achy feelings too. I saw my midwife today for my booking in and she said both were normal and that it was also normal to feel a little better around ten weeks as that's when the placenta kicks in. I do advise you to go for the scan though just for added peace of mind. I had a scan at 8 weeks and it made me feel so much better. Hope that helps!

Flickstar · 09/12/2011 12:59

Hi grizzly how did you get on this morning? Hoping all went well for you

littlegrizzly · 09/12/2011 13:26

Hi Flickstar!

I had the scan this morning. Everything is absolutely fine. Saw the baby's heart beating really clearly on the monitor and it was just such a massive relief that everything is okay.

The sonographer and nurses were all so lovely. It turns out my endometriosis from years ago has returned to a small degree on my left ovary, so that is probably causing some of the discomfort I've been experiencing. They said that my morning sickness going could be perfectly normal as it should go anytime from 10 weeks onwards. It turns out my dates were about half a week out and they actually think I'm 10 weeks along, rather than 9 and a half.

We even got a picture of the baby, which we weren't expecting at all today. :)

Anyway, I just want to say a massive thank you for the advice and support from everyone. I've got to say, I'm really glad I went for the scan because nobody there made me feel dumb for worrying - they were all so so lovely and supportive.

I've just got to wait until 22nd December now for my regular scan - we've opted for the combined screening.

Good luck to everyone! xx

Yipee! So glad all was ok. I spoke to my midwife today as she called about some blood results and she said that the back pain around ten weeks is often caused by the uterus moving up out of the pelvis around about this time too. Lucky you being further on than you thought too! My nuchal scan is on the 22nd too- also having combined screening. Fingers crossed for us both!

That is such great news! Xmas Grin.
