Hi, I live abroad and only understand about 80% of what the doctor says to me! I was thinking about buying a good comprehensive pregnancy book on amazon, does anyone have any good ideas?
Thanks very much

How about this one?. This one is good to read before Lo arrives too Xmas Smile.

Kellymom does a list of books to avoid if you want to bf here.

Congratulations btw Thanks.

I found What to Expect When You're Expecting by Heidi Murkov (sp?) to be brilliant. There is a UK and a US edition (tailored to the different health systems) so you should be able to pick the one that best suits where you are based, although it doesn't really matter as that's a small part of the book.

The thing I found it brilliant for was week-by-week explanations of what's happening with your baby, plus lots of information and reassurance on the various changes, aches and pains and weird symptoms you might experience. It saved my sanity and calmed me down a few times (I've re-read the section on baby movement in the second trimester about 100 times!).

I know other people really rate Your Pregnancy Week by Week, but I don't have it.

Good luck and congrats!

Birth and Beyond is very comprehensive, forget who by.

Actually now I've reread the "What Not to Read" list, I've realised that my SIL read 2 of those books and nothing else and she never did bf.

Pregnancy Bible was good - clear, easy to read and had good week by week development sections for both you and baby.

Oh and I also had What To Expect the First Year which was brilliant when DS1 was little

I'm with those who recommend "The Pregnancy Bible" by Anne Deans

i had it as well as "what to expect"

both were good though i found the pregnancy bible one better for looking things up directly. "what to expect" was more of a narrative and i tended to stumble upon interesting things rather than being able to find them directly. it was good bathroom reading Wink

Yes I like Birth and Beyond too. It's by Dr Yehudi Gordon. I know this because I can see it on the shelf from where I'm sitting!

KatAndKit · 08/12/2011 23:05

I have loads of them!
What to expect when you are expecting is good. It is informative, although the style irritates me at times. I also have it as bathroom reading and I leave it there so that DP can read it too. He has clearly been paying attention.

For readability value, I love the Mumsnet Guide. It's like a whole book of tips that you'd get reading on here and is witty whilst also being very informative.

For the pictures, I have a Pregnancy Day by Day book which I love looking at but it doesn't have the same level of information as the others.

Where abroad? I found that buying a book in French was a good vocab lesson, good prep on cultural norms for birthing and ultimately more useful than the British books on what was going on when and what I had to do.

Birthing prep I did through English books - no chance of finding translations.

What to Expect When You're Expecting

I bought this one the other day: www.amazon.co.uk/My-Pregnancy-2012-pregnancy-ebook/dp/B0065GF4V8

Only flicked through it but seems good so far, it has chapters on everything from relationships to finance to managing symptoms and is updated every year so is really relevant.

It is the first one I have tried though!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 11/12/2011 10:50

Can you try the link again glitter?
