So I'm 20 weeks pregnant, and I've just ate a chicken and mushroom pot noodle for the first time in yeeaarrss, from which I've always been fine with. But this time..my tongue started stinging and tingling a bit, also went slightly swollen, then my chest started going really itchy...is this a reaction? And is it normal for pregnancy to cause reactions to things?

Hi, that sounds like an MSG reaction. I get the same symptoms when I eat Chinese or Thai food. MSG is added to many foods and is sometimes called yeast extract or flavouring.

I have heard about people being more sensitive to certain things in pregnancy such as jewelry, washing power ect. I would check whats in it and avoid in the future.

My skin was definitely more sensitive in pregnancy. In fact I had an allergic reaction to that cocoa butter bump balm marketed at pregnant women! So maybe avoid similar foods for now, and mention it to your midwife/doctor. Hopefully it is just temporary.

Yep, had a massive reaction in my last pregnancy to mascara, the same one Id used for years!

i think it must be normal - i know that your immune system is a lot lower when you're pg (to stop your body rejecting the foetus)
so, it does follow that something you might be mildly allergic to (ie enough not to ever notice) would produce a reaction now you're pg.

I reacted to the plaster they put on my arm after my blood tests yesterday - a big circular itchy whelt on my arm.

Thankyou, how strange? My tongue is still sore. Hurt like hell to eat toast this morning!

Ive been allergic to just about everything since I got pregnant, glade plug ins finnish me off these days and I had them all over the house! Perhaps you need to discuss anti histamines with your GP because a swollen tongue needs a careful eye keeping on it- be a good idea to have something that you could take if it happened again
