We have decided not to find out the sex as we want to have the 'its a boy / girl' moment at the moment of hatching.
I can imagine myself with a girl, probably as I am one myself (although not espeically girlie) but not really with a boy. While I honestly don't mind which it is, I was wondering if anyone with a boy (of whatever age) could tell me what life is like with one, and how fab they are (and why!) so I can get my imagination going.
Thank you!

My ds is 6 and is great on the whole. Very energetic, talkative, great fun, needs alot of exercise! He is closer to me than my dd and needs lots of hugs and reasurrance. I am having another ds in a couple of months, so am hoping they will both get on well together. Congratulations on your pregnancy.

Eggrules · 06/12/2011 10:51

I was the same. I think it was easier to imagine myself with a girl because I used to be one Xmas Grin. I was surprised when I had a boy but it was the best thing ever. He is so loving and funny. He is a total bottle of pop and always on the go. I'm so glad I had my lovely boy.

Whatever happens your DC will fit right in and you will find it hard to imagine life before they came.

babysaurus · 06/12/2011 10:56

Thanks all! A friend of mine once described her son by saying 'he's like a labrador, he needs food and cuddles and a good run once or twice a day' which I thought was fab!

when they are little no real difference babies are babies. would agree with the above poster about hugs and things that did surprise me in relation to my girls. not clingy but wanted more affection. he likes to run around and have a good old shout its not that girls dont do that but they seem to do it for a reason.

FrillyMilly · 06/12/2011 10:56

I'm pregnant with a bot. Already have a DD who is 3. I really didn't mind what we had this time but I am nervous about having a boy. I have a sister who is close in age and a brother who is a lot younger. I'm worried about basic things like nappy changing and keeping his area clean. To toilet training and beyond. What if I don't know what to do???? I know it's silly. DH is a boy so it shouldn't be too difficult. I've just always known what to do with DD.

FrillyMilly · 06/12/2011 10:56

*boy not bot

I have 2 boys and they are great fun. they are always on the go, always dirty, always hungrey but come night they love nothing better than a cuddle. life is never dull with a boy. you just need to learn how to kick a football!

yummicheddars · 06/12/2011 11:05

At first.. A boy is like a normal baby. Boy or girl. But I find now he's a toddler, he does act different to girls, although I haven't got a girl, just been told. I love boys, hoping for another as I'm pregnant with number 2, I find out next wednesday. Anyway, he is very boisterous, which I love, he loves to play fight and wrestle on the floor with his dad, which I love to watch them. He isn't a cuddly little boy however, but when he does cuddle you its the tightest sqeeze and biggest kiss! I love it when I put him to bed and night and he says "love you mummy" . I do consider boys to be more boisterous, there is the downfalls, but I'm sure there is with girls to ( don't know much about girl toddlers) but my little boy does like to shout at me and answer back. He also slams doors in my face and throw things, I ask him anything and I get NOOO back. But I'm sure he's just being a typical toddler? Anyway... I love having a boy. Everyday is different and no matter how many times he shouts at me I feel proud.

tabulahrasa · 06/12/2011 11:08

Babies are babies, by the time they're boys or girls it doesn't matter anyway because you know them and they're your little people, lol

IssyStark · 06/12/2011 11:14

I love my 5 yo son. He likes running, jumping, play-flighting but then I would want any daughter of mine to do the same! He's onto rockets, cars, trains, planes, pirates, knights and anything that goes bang (but not dinosaurs so much). And he loves cuddles, loves cooking and making things, he loves playing football and cricket as well as playing shop. He's great fun as well as being the typical tantruming kid.

As for washing his bits, the only thing to remember is not to retract his foreskin and otherwise you sluice them down!

FunnysInTheGarden · 06/12/2011 11:15

I have 2 boys, and they are great. Totally full on and need to do lots of running about and shouting, but really good fun and very affectionate.

4madboys · 06/12/2011 11:20

boys are great! i have 4 obviously, 12, 9, 6 and 3yrs and they are just fun, lots of running around, can be a noisy and hectic at times but its great, they are lovely and cuddly and kind and affectionate.

i also have a 12mth old dd and tbh other than nappy changes and buying her cute clothes i havent noticed a difference tbh, a baby is a baby :)

NotnOtter · 06/12/2011 11:34

I have five boys!!! And a girl
Babies are the same - although I think boys stay babies a bit longer iyswim! Errr none of mine are sporty or boisterous, the last three are quite serene things!!! Very cuddly and loving - vie for my snuggles...
Easy soft lovely philosophical people... No where near as much fun to dress up although mine have long hair which is beautiful!
I don't think you can generalise - mine are quite different to one another but maybe that's because I embrace their feminine side Wink

NotnOtter · 06/12/2011 11:35

X posts 4madboys and I think we sound quite similar !

4madboys · 06/12/2011 11:38

notnaotter my ds3 is very feminine, his fave things are pink and purple and tinkerbell!! he loves dressing up and playing with fairies etc. ds2 is VERY sporty, totally football mad. ds1 is quiet and likes to read and draw and into maths and science (he has long hair tho) and ds4 is well just a 3yr old really, likes toy story and cuddles and sucking his thumb!

dd is just my little doll and at the moment seems the same as the boys at her age, will be interesting to see what she is like as a toddler :)

working9while5 · 06/12/2011 11:46

You have to make sure you point their willies down in the nappy or you may get pee in the face!

Other than that, they are just cuddly little babies until they get to toddler age at which point mine shocked the life out of me by having ZERO interest in any of the gender-neutral lovely toys I had bought him and became entirely, utterly, irrefutably OBSESSED with cars and trains.

Beanbagz · 06/12/2011 11:50

They're so full of life, always on the go which can be exhausting but is very rewarding. My boy is joy to be with.

DS will be 7 at the end of December but still comes into bed for cuddles in the morning and loves to cosy up on the sofa for little chats (DH insists i'm too soft with him). The only thing he doesn't do is kisses but i manage to sneak those when he's sleeping Smile

Girls - they're fun too. Still getting bedtime kisses from my nearly 10 year old and we lie side by side in her bed talking about our day. But i worry more about her. She's not too girly either so the four of us can all do things together.

smk84 · 06/12/2011 11:53

Our DS is 2.7 and he is wonderful. His smile melts me every time, he is great fun, caring and outgoing. He loves to play with trains, cars, puzzles, books and his baby/pram. He loves music, singing and dancing and on the whole he is an angel. He does have his moments (especially with being impatient!) but I bet all toddlers do !
Not finding out IMO is the best way, so exciting !

kickingking · 06/12/2011 12:00

I also didn't find out the sex and assumed I was having a girl.

My DS is a delight - he was a lovely, sunny baby. Good sleeper, good eater, always happy and smiling.

He has a lovely sense of humour and a natural curiosity about everything. I love the questions he asks and his theories about the way things work. He is very affectionate and loves cuddles, even now at nearly 5.

He loves making things (art and crafty things, cakes, bread, DIY, you name it) being outdoors and his cuddly toys. Never really been into cars or rough games.

He is lovely Smile

NotnOtter · 06/12/2011 12:05

Kicking king he sounds just lovely!

Napdamnyou · 06/12/2011 12:07

When you put nappy on, make sure willy is pointing down not up.
Also newborn boys spray wee when you take nappy off, the cold air makes them wee!

MarthasHarbour · 06/12/2011 12:13

waves at OP read the thread then realised it is you!

The day after i had DS i got a call from my Aunty whilst i was still in hosp, she has two DS's (44 and 42 now! Wink ) she squealed down the phone 'oh Martha congratulations - little boys are wonderful, you will get so much love from him'

that has stayed with me ever since, obviously little girls are wonderful too and it is not to generalise but i have to say that i couldnt imagine anything better than my PFB DS! Your friend's analogy to a labrador is rather sweet and very true. Smile

Dont let anyone tell you that 'all boys are boisterous' mine can stand up for himself but he is no bully.

Oh and i second the advice about the nappy - dear god we went through some wet babygro's before we realised

4madboys · 06/12/2011 12:16

yes have a cloth to hand when taking nappy off so if they start to wee you can put that over their bits, a flannel or muslin cloth works well :)

ShowOfHands · 06/12/2011 12:18

I have a 4yo dd and 13wo ds. So far there's bog all difference outside of anatomy. DD is obsessed with marvel superheroes, pirates, knights and ninja turtles and likes being mucky, dashing around madly and is ridiculously affectionate and loving. Can't imagine any reason why these traits wouldn't also be found in a boy.

You just love them as a person, not as a gender.
