Hi
I have just found out I am pg with no.2. We moved back to nottingham this year so didn't have DS here. I assuming my choice will be between the City hospital and kingsmill - does anyone have any good / bad experiences of either or both. I want to make an informed choice this time, as last time I had 4 hospitals to choose from because of where we lived and I possibly chose the worst.

Hi there,

I lived in Sutton not so long ago but moved back to Sussex to have my son (now 8 weeks old) when I was up there I was never offered a choice between Kingsmill or QMC if I had been I would have chosen QMC straight away. Kingsmill is old run down and dirty, I can't guarantee that the QMC will be any better but it can't be any worse.

The only thing to think about would be the distance you would have to travel to QMC for us it would have been about half an hour in light traffic, dread to think what it would be in rush hour traffic.

Hi

I thought that's what you might say! I have a couple of friends who's babaies were in the scbu at kingmill and were impressed, but I am hoping this will be a straight forward delivery as last time (fingers crossed).
My other option would be city hospital rather than QMC. I am hoping to be able to go and have a look.

Hi. I had my 3rd baby at Nottingham City. The 1st 2 were born in London in a v. dirty squalid hospital. City was great. I had a water birth, the midwives were totally laid back and didn't intervene much at all - they were there and supportive but let me be in control. It was fantastic and the ward was fine too. There's a hotel where you and partner and baby can stay free post-birth if it is your 2nd baby, but it was closed when I gave birth. My friends all had their babies there too and said how good it was - some had more complicate deliveries than me -(v. straightforward birth). I live 30-40 mins from Nottingham and they were easy going about me onlt being 4cms dilated on arrival - didn't want to wait too long due to journey and snow - and they didn't send me home. Good luck - I'd vote for City. I haven't heard such good things re. Kingsmill and one of those reports comes from a friend who is a paediatric nurse.

I wouldn't touch Kingsmill based on its reputation only. I had both at City and it was fine, although midwives are very busy and they are very strict about the criteria for letting you up to the Hotel. City certainly do tours on Saturday afternoons so you can have a look. ask to speak to the Parenthood sister. Lots of people are very happy with QMC too. Go and have a look round.

i had my dd at Nottingham City. i found it fine while i was there, midwife was friendly and left me to it because everything was fine. the only thing i didnt like was that they made me stay at hime ages before they let me come in, they said my contractions weren't lasting long enough for me go, but i had to tell them i couldnt cope with the pain so they agreed. when i got there they checked me and i was 7cms!! havent really heard anything good about kingsmill

Agree with other posters - City hospital has an excellent reputation. I had both my DSs there and had very good experience both times. The midwives were brilliant, helped me stick to my drug free plan, had physiological third stage, and had the option of a water birth second time round. Best of all, we stayed in the hotel both times and it was wonderful. Peaceful, private, your own bathroom ... really made a difference. Reading this back makes it sound like it was all a wonderful experience - of course it bloody wasn´t, hurt like hell obviously, but as far as hospitals go, then the City were excellent!

Hi

Thank you for all your feedback - I am certainly leaning towards the city and would like to look at the option of a water birth, not sure if that's available at kingsmill.
I know that Kingsmill had a very bad rep in the past but wasn't sure if this was still the case.
Hopefully I can get a tour sorted soon.

The QMC is far better than the city as everyone goes to the city - they have loads of private rooms at the QMC and the care during and after pregnancey is fantastic

mabel1973 · 09/01/2006 15:38

unfortunately QMC is a little bit too far I think. We are north nottingham and in rush hour could take 45 to an hour to get there. The thought of me sitting in a load of commuter traffic having contractions is not a pretty one

we're 45 mins away as well we're smack bang in the middle of the derby city and QMC.

earthtomummy · 09/01/2006 15:52

really recommend the water birth bit

mabel1973 · 09/01/2006 15:52

I guess it's worth considering, although I'm not convinced DH could survive that long driving me to hospital....
