Sweets and junk. :(

I have always had a sweet tooth, but after initial nausea in the first 12 weeks, it did die down (not totally). However, now I seem to be going bonkers mad for chocolate, sweets, and general crap. For example, tonight I had 4 lollipops and half a bag of Doritos for my dinner (big bag)!!! This is not good. I have to get a grip and start to eat a lot more healthily. I eat quite a lot of fruit, and don't eat a lot of red meat, but I'm not going to kid myself that I am a paragon of health. Did anyone just want to eat total junk throughout their entire pregnancy, or did it get better? I'm currently 20 weeks.

I got like that around 20 weeks this time and am still like that now Blushall i want is junk food and im 31 weeks now! I have been making myself eat healthier though, my iron levels were shockingly low thanks to my diet. I keep saying you can tell its a girl im having by all the chocolate i want to eat Grin I eat a lot of fruit too so its not too bad!

SinicalSal · 05/12/2011 21:19

I would try to eat a balanced diet first, your 5 fruit n veg etc, and if you crave sweet stuff as well, it won't be from hunger or low blood sugar and you're less likely to go overboard. A little junk is ok (imo) as long as you are getting the necessities.

ChineapplePunk · 05/12/2011 21:20

I'm no 630 mg's of iron per day. I've always been prone to anaemia, but Dr wants me on this dose for obvious reasons. I have upped my iron rich foods, but just cannot seem to cut out the crap. BTW, I know I'm having a boy! Found out sex at 20 week scan. :)

I am now 22w with DC2, so far I have lived on a combination of cake, biscuits, lemonade, sweets, chocolate and roast beef Monster Munch.

The only thing I have really been able to face is large quantities of toast (white), pasta with cheese sauce and chips from the chippy.

Pretty much anything with any sort of decent nutritional value makes my stomach turn at the thought of eating it. I've been taking a vitamin tablet and Spatone sachet each day just to make sure that at least I am replenishing whatever the baby is taking from me vitamin and mineral wise and to keep my iron level up.

My staple item throughout this pregnancy has been a Snickers bar every afternoon at work. Now im on Mat Leave, Ive not had one Hmm

Maybe I just needed a sugar rush after such an early start? Think your body is usually pretty good at knowing what it needs when pregnant, and craving sweet stuff isn't the end of the world. Tbh, I was just glad I kept the food down, after three months of MS. Sincal s idea is good - squeeze in your 5 a day first then splurge after. Chop up a mahoosive bowl of fruit and leave it in the fridge to pick at every time you pass

ChineapplePunk · 05/12/2011 21:26

LikeAnAdvent, Trust me, if it was just a snickers bar in the afternoon, I would be patting myself squarely on the back. :)

Grin there were also the Macdonalds for tea, the odd Subway, my own body weight in Pickled Onion Monster Much....but none of it had the familiar repetetiveness of my afternoon snickers.

My food diary for today:

Breakfast - Two Weetabix with skimmed milk, a banana, and a glass of purple grape juice (diluted) :)

Teabreak - Small chunk of Wensleydale cheese, an apple, and a twix. :(

Lunch - Small chunk of Wensleydale, an apple, and some oatcakes with marmalade.

Dinner - Doritos, drumstick lolly, swizzle lolly, another drumstick lolly, and another, plus some turkish delight thins. WTF???? :(

Just drink mineral water and fruit juice throughout the day. It started of quite well and then just went totally tits up. This is a familiar pattern.

I've pretty much gone off junk food. The odd crisps, but majorly eating lettuce and tomatos everyday, 20weeks I am now, but for the first few weeks I was into major sugary stuff, full fat coke and sweets! Can't eat chocolate..gives me real bad indigestion now! I cud eat lettuce all day everyday right now. And fruit, satsumas. Although I am still having that weakness for cheese lol

ITryToBeZenBut · 06/12/2011 13:47

Hi chineapple That looks like quite a small lunch to me followed by a gap til tea - wouldn't keep me going and I tend to be a eat-6-smaller-meals/snacks-a-day type of person.

Is that similar to what you used to eat? Do you feel hungry when you start on the sweets at dinner time? Have you tried adding something sweet but more substantial for a PM snack like a wholemeal scone or hot cross bun? The fruit juice and water will make your blood sugar go up and down so maybe if you have it in the pm after a small lunch but no snack, you get a sugar dip and then grab for more sugar at teatime?

I also am not sure I agree with the whole thing about not needing extra calories til third trimester. Everyone is different and I was VERY hungry for a spell but didnt eat more as thought i wasnt meant to and then cracked in the evening too and hoovered up the cupboard contents Grin Should have just listened to my body a bit earlier.

spannermary · 06/12/2011 16:19

I'm all about comfort food...melted cheese toasties, sausages, mash, roasts, gravy. Yum yum yum.

Oh, and chocolate. Now where's that dairy milk?

I'm 22 weeks btw.

hippieshake · 07/12/2011 15:59

I hear you...

15weeks. Just ate half a big bag of Walkers Sensations and 4 little chocolates out of the Christmas jar. I'm terrified that I'm going to balloon, I've put 5lbs on already!!

xx

HappyCamel · 07/12/2011 16:08

Have you had a GD test? I developed sugar cravings and was later diagnosed with diabetes. Too much sugar can't cause GD but I think craving it could be a symptom.

Like adventcandle I think lack of rest can cause sugar cravings too.

coffeeaddict · 07/12/2011 17:19

Try eating eggs for breakfast? Or a bigger chunk of Wenslydale? :)

ChineapplePunk · 07/12/2011 19:49

HappyCamel, aren't there other symptoms with GD, like excessive thirst, etc? Probably quite hard to separate out symptoms mind you, because thirst, tiredness and needing to urinate more often can be symptoms of pregnancy too.
I haven't had a GD test because I assume they do not consider me at high risk of developing it. However, from the information I can gather, it looks as if you are offered the test between 24 and 28 weeks if you are considered at risk of developing GD. I'm beginning to wonder whether I should just ask for the test regardless?? :(

Are you craving the sweet things, or just eating them out of habit? I'm not craving them, I just find myself going for crisps/chocolate/biscuits rather than fruit because I like to sit and pick at stuff like that in an evening.

I'm going to try not to tonight :)

I guess as long as you are getting other nutrients too, and you aren't gaining loads of weight, then you'll be ok x

ChineapplePunk · 07/12/2011 20:03

I'm not really craving as such. For example, I had a pine nut, feta cheese, pea shoot, and tomato salad tonight with wholemeal bread. Then afterwards I fancied a lollipop, so had one. That's the only "sugary" thing I've had today. Don't get me wrong, I could eat another 5 no problem whatsoever, however, I could easily do that when I wasn't pregnant. :)

Ds1 is entirely made of extra strong mints, ginger beer, and Percy Pigs Grin

Have to say though that I was overweight to begin with, and did put on quite a bit. I discovered when I was yelled at in the delivery room after an emergency section and 30 cocking hours of labour that I'd had GD. That was the first I'd heard of it, so obviously I'd not been tested.

With ds2 my cravings were sadly apples and salad. Despited the fact I started that pregnancy over 2 stone lighter than the previous one, and hardly gained a thing, I was still tested for GD. Tbh if you're worried then ask for the test. It's not that bad (though dh was glad he was nowhere near when I had to get myself up and out to the hospital without the aid of caffeine Wink), and it sounds like it would set your mind at rest.

COCKadoodledooo · 07/12/2011 20:30

Despited? Wtf?! Despite.

Xmasbaby11 · 07/12/2011 20:39

Op, you don't seem to be eating that much so your blood sugar is probably dropping low - you need more protein and carbs in the same meal, as well as veg. You'll probably crave less sweet stuff then.

I eat 3 square meals and a couple of choc bars / mince pies / whatever I can find!

brandysoakedbitch · 07/12/2011 20:54

Dinner - Doritos, drumstick lolly, swizzle lolly, another drumstick lolly, and another, plus some turkish delight thins. WTF????

My children are entirely made of pickled beetroot/onion, crisps and pop (particularly lucozade and full fat coke) - I always like a moam chew too

Have a bigger breakfast - weetabix with skimmed milk, how utterly joyless!Grin
