Has anybody had this done? I have to have one next week but I have no idea what it entails! All my letter says is that I have to go nil-by-mouth from midnight apart from plain water, I have to bring a bottle of Lucozade and the test takes 2 hours! It seems like a hell of a long time to me so I would really appreciate a heads up on what to expect.

Hi there.. Am really pleased you have posted this, I'm sorry I don't know the answers to your questions but I have my glucose tolerance test next week too as DD1 was a whopper at just about 11lbs. I was going to post the same thing.

I didn't even realise the nil by mouth thing to be honest. Oops. I would probably have had my standard massive breakfast. I go all woozy when hungry so not looking forward to it..

Hopefully some more knowledgeable ladies will be along soon Smile

Oh they are so boring I have to have one every 4 weeks!!

Yours sounds a little diffrent to mine.

I have to be nil by mouth for 12 hours and go to hospital have blood test, then they give me a horrible glucose drink, ten sit around for 2 hours, not aloud to walk about or anything. Then another blood test!!!

Is yours a regular 28 week bloody test?

jaquelinehyde · 05/12/2011 20:00

Oh god bloody boring nightmare! Exactly as xkatyx explained it.

I hate lucozade it makes me throw up, so I had to try really hard not to otherwise they would make me do it all over again!!

only tip i can give you is drink it down as fast as you can also if your sick you have to redo again

fhdl34 · 05/12/2011 20:14

They let me go home inbetween the blood tests as long as I promised to sit and do nothing (which I was happy to do as I was weak and miserable from hunger) but I only lived a 3 minute drive away from home. You have to drink the lucozade within a certain amount of time as well otherwise you have to do it again. I was in a foul mood with mine, hated being so hungry for so long. Since being pregnant, hunger is not something I tolerate well.

hiya i had mine today. Was to eat nothing from midnight and be there at 9am was told it would take 2 hours but didn't get my first blood test til 9.45 she took a small bottle of blood then gave me 2 plastic cups of lucozade, told me to wait 2 hours was allowed to walk about even said i could go a walk round the shops as we are in city centre, went back after 2 hours got more blood taken and was given a sandwich, then went into see the diabetes nurse she told me first test was borderline neg and would phone me this afternoon with next results. I'm still waiting but said if it's poss would need to go back to clinic tomorrow. good luck

PinkPeanuts · 05/12/2011 21:04

Ah I see, so most of the 2 hours is waiting time? I think I may pass out from boredom!

xkatyx I don't know how regular they're going to be, I was really confused as to why I was having it at first but according to the leaflet that came with my appointment letter, it's probably to do with the fact that I'm Black Carribean (higher chance of Diabetes).

Better make sure the iPhone is fully charged and I've got a good book to read then!

i ended up in for 3 and a half hours, you wait for 2 hours betwee tests but still needed to wait 40 mins to be seen at first then the 2 hours then another 45 mins to be told the result of my first test, still waiting on her phoning with the second results. I'd take someone with you if you can i'd say 15 -20 mins was with nurse the rest was waiting.

GwendolineMaryLacedwithBrandy · 06/12/2011 09:47

Yes, they'll do it if there is any reason to suspect increased risk. It does go quite quickly actually, not as bad as it sounds, except for the drink which is vile!
