Jems don't want to put a downer on things but I was very superstitious, wouldn't buy anything for the baby until after the 20 week scan and didn't tell anyone except v close family until after the 12 week scan. I just kept thinking what if something happens and I'm left with little baby clothes and no baby Sorry but thought I should impart that before you get cot, buggy etc for xmas.

I agree with everyone, spend the money on YOU, NOW! Go on holiday together and enjoy some quality time together, you will need those memories to get you through the difficult first few months. We had a lovely 2 leg trip to NY and Ibiza when I was 7 months pg, really enjoyed it!

Jemma7 · 06/11/2003 17:01

Know your not trying to put a downer CountessD!

We have decided to just tell everyone because god forbid anything bad happens, everyone would find out anyway

I hear what your saying about not getting stuff yet and i do agree with what everyones saying about spending time together before baby arrives but we're not in the best financial position so we would be better off if we could save the money we would spend on a break away to pay for things closer to the time they are needed!

Thanks for all your advise everyone - the honesty helps

One bit of advise I wish I'd been given when PG with DS1 was don't buy a pram that's to distinctive ie bright colours, as I learnt today when I used the thing it almost glows, people were shielding their eyes from it and I'm not sure if I can talk DH into letting me get another less violently coloured one

Enjoy the pram shopping.......it's the best shopping their is!

Jemma7 · 06/11/2003 17:22

We got the new mams and papas catalogue and have picked out a few we like - can't wait to go to the shop and have a look at them "in real life"!!

Telling Parents tonight - feel really nervous - i work for them and the whole time we have been ttc this has been my big worry! i know they will be really pleased about us having a baby and them being grandparents again but i just don't want them to feel like i have let them down on the work front

Forgot to say DS1 is now 4.5 yrs old so the pram is practically an antique and DS3 also hated it. Maybe he was embarrassed as me to be seen with it

EmmaTMG · 06/11/2003 17:24

I'm sure your parents will be thrilled and won't give the work issue a second thought. Don't woory Jemma just enjoy the moment of telling them.

Hi Jemma, just wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS! A couple of people have mentioned 12 week scans to you, but you may not get them routinely in your area - where I live the only one you get as standard is at 20 weeks. Ring your GP and ask when you should go in for your "booking appointment", that's your first appointment with GP or midwife to talk over what will happen with the pregnancy, go through paperwork etc. All the best!

Hi there,

If anybody who is currently pregnant and is interested in helping me complete some simple research into exercise during pregnancy please visit the 'media/non-members requests' page and follow the 'Help advance research in pregnancy and exercise' message.

Thankyou in advance

After being a bit doom laden earlier, just want to say having a baby is like falling intensely in love. You wouldn't believe that you had the capacity for so much emotion....and there are intense moments of pride and wonder when they do their 'firsts' (like first smile, first steps, first words etc)

elena2 · 06/11/2003 23:57

Huge congrats Jemma!

The best advice I can think of is to ENJOY your first pregnancy as much as you can and relish all those 'firsts', the first time you feel your tiny baby kick inside you, the first time you see him/her at the scan, your growing bump and how you can't stop yourself touching it all the time, the first time you hear the 'wow-wow' noise of the baby's heartbeat.

And don't be scared of the birth, or let other peoples birth stories scare you. It will be the most fantastic moment of your life when you finally see the little being that you have grown inside you, and felt moving and kicking for the last 9 months.

Your first pregnancy is so special, never again will you experience any of these feelings for the first time, and it is such a fantastic feeling to be carrying a baby inside you. It's like having a little secret all to yourself all the time!

And make the most of your time together just the two of you! Your life starts to change forever from the moment you discover you are pregnant.

I wish I could be pregnant for the first time again, I'm so jealous! Enjoy every minute!

love and more congratulations

Jemma& - CONGRATULATIONS! There really is nothing like being pregnant - it's the best feeling in the world! Don't go mad on the baby products though - as long as they've got a cot, pushchair and carseat (if you've got a car), that's really the main thing (apart from the obvious). I got loads of stuff from my cousin (Silvercross carrycot and eventually rest of Silvercross traditional pram - a "childhood dream" of mine to have proper silvercross pram!) as well as highchair, babybath and loads of "unisex" babygroes, bibs etc, so if you can borrow stuff all the better, as newborn stuff really doesn't last very long. Also don't forget you will get lots of clothes etc as presents when dd/ds arrives, so only buy the basics. Enjoy being pregnant - agree with others that feeling the baby move is the best feeling in the world. First time I "saw" dd1 move was when we were on holiday in Tuscany - dh and other friends in next room having drunken party whilst I was trying to relax and read my book, when I suddenly saw belly move!

Congratulations again, and enjoy being preggers!

CnR · 07/11/2003 22:00

Congratulations!

anais · 07/11/2003 22:27

Do ENJOY being pregnant, sometimes it feels neverending, but no two pregnancies are alike and when it;s over it's over Make the most of it.

Would also say, when you do go and buy your pram - try them all out and I would suggest leaving it until after your baby is born (you can use a sling initially). Your requirements will change once you've got a babe from what you think they will be IYSWIM. And, things like handle height and whatever make a big difference.

I would also, personally, say don't go mad spending. It doesn't really matter how much you spend on a pram or a cot or whatever, baby won't notice the difference. IMO better (particularly in the current climate...) to put the money into savings for uni, or baby's pension evem

anais · 07/11/2003 22:29

Oh, and the other thing I would add - which I wish someone had suggested before I had my ds - is but a 5 year page a day diary to keep a record. Note down milestones, things babe says (once talking, obviously!) things that you do on a day-to-day basis. It is amazing how soon you will forget (although you swear you won't!) and it's lovely to look back on

bobsmum · 07/11/2003 22:38

Jemma - Congratulations first of all!!!!!

I used my Boots Advantage card constantly. I bought every piece of baby equipment (and folic acid!) I could when on special offer or buy one get one free. 14 months on I still have a sizeable stash of baby bath/shampoo/lotion/wipes etc.

Boots usually do deals like get 1000 points when you spend X amount on baby products - that's £10!!

After getting everything I needed (and plenty extra now Boots do lovely baby clothes) I ended up with £120 of Boots points and did all our Christmas shopping there using the points, when they did their 3 for 2 offers - cheapest Christmas ever all thanks to ds! (He got loads of nice Boots toys too).

Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

I'm not on commission, honest!

Congratulations Jemma7!

EmmaTMG, that sounds like our pram, they were all the rage 4 1/2 years ago.
