If you had the chance of an early scan would you take it?

Hi All

I have been to see the GP today as I have been experiencing some pains this week and when I spoke to them yesterday by phone, they wanted to check everything was ok. The GP has advised it all feels normal and in the right place, however if I have any severe pain or bleeding over the weekend to seek urgent medical advice.

He was very re-assuring that all was ok, and asked me to either call him if the pains were still there and he would book an early scan, or call in and book with midwife on Monday. I did book my midwife appointment today as I know she can get booked up quickly and have my appointment for 15th Dec.

I am at high risk of a multiple pregnancy as confirmed by the GP today and he has advised due to this risk the midwife may book an early scan. My question is would you contact the GP on Monday to get one through him even if the pains have subsided??

I dont want to put anything at risk but would like to know asap if I am expecting more than one, with already having 2 DC.

Thanks :)

Have a scan! You aren't risking anything by doing so, it can only be a plus! You get all the info and peace of mind that all is well

hippieshake · 02/12/2011 17:55

Have a scan. I had two early scans dues to cramping pains and very light spotting. Both times it completely eased my mind to see a healthy baby with a healthy heartbeat. Now I'm 14 weeks, and the worry is starting to ease.

The early pregnancy unit were so helpful, they answered all of my questions, and made me feel comfortable.

I'd say go for it xxx

phunkiephedora · 02/12/2011 18:05

Agree with Mum and Hippie, have a scan, I've just been for my 2nd early scan today, first at 7+1 and today at 10+1.
With twins for my first pregancy I really needed to know if there was just one in there!

spannermary · 02/12/2011 18:07

Sure - why not! Take whatever you're offered... :)

katekate3 · 02/12/2011 18:35

I phoned up my early pregnancy unit direct and was able to self refer for a scan. Had it at 11 weeks and really helped me.

oflip · 02/12/2011 18:39

I would if its offered, but then early scans have only ever brought me distress, uncertainty and bad news.
Flip side to everything i spose.

MrsRV · 03/12/2011 08:50

Some people pay for early scans just for some reassurance... I say do it... 12 weeks is just forever to wait!!! x

RealLifeIsForWimps · 03/12/2011 10:58

Where I live you get scanned at every appointment. I like it, as if I've had a mmc or the pregnancy looks non-viable I'd rather know at 7 weeks than find out at 12 weeks when I've had time to get used to the idea.

LoveInAColdClimate · 03/12/2011 11:06

Have it! I paid for one at 8 weeks as I felt so anxious about everything being ok - was amazing to hear the heartbeat so early and to know that everything was where it should be. And congratulations!

TrickyBiscuits · 03/12/2011 21:48

If I understand your OP correctly, you've been offered an early scan on the proviso that you're still having pains on Monday. You've said the pain has now subsided so therefore you're considering lying in order to get a scan?

justhayley · 03/12/2011 21:55

Yeah def have a scan, I had 2 early scans due to severe cramps one at 5 weeks one at 7, both mine were vaginal scans bit uncomfortable but worth getting for peace of mind

dreamfeeder · 03/12/2011 21:59

I wouldn't lie to get it, or you might take a scan slot so someone currently bleeding or in bad pain would miss out. Why the high risk of multiple pregnancy? I was so sick, saw mw at 9 weeks, with a bulge despite having lost 5lb already (felt my tummy, assured me she couldn't feel a fundus therefore was singleton pg), saw GP, was prescribed rehydration sachets and anti-emetics, twins on my 12 week scan! No-one thought I was having twins. Having said that, as soon as I found out, I was worried something would happen to one or other babies (still am at 20 weeks!), and the NHS stats on 'vanishing twin' syndrome (where on early scan there are two babies, but by 12 weeks there is only one surviving baby) would have firgthened the life out of me if I'd found out earlier, for me personally. I have a 14 month old so will have 3 under 18 months!!

However, if you can get a scan earlier and without having to lie, I'd do it for reassurance. If the GP couldn't get you one without pain, I'd ring mw early and see if she can get you a date too.

catsareevil · 03/12/2011 22:02

I wouldnt lie either, and agree with dreamfeeder re 'vanishing twin'.

harrygracejessica · 03/12/2011 22:40

dreamfeeder I had 3 in 15 months, its tiring but worth it.

I want even offered an early scan after having twins so found out at my 12 week scan I was having another set!.

Personally if there wasnt anything wrong then dont contact the doctor, if you just need to know for you then pay and go private.

LoveInAColdClimate · 03/12/2011 22:53

Oh, sorry, had missed that you were planning on taking an NHS scan even if pain had stopped, OP. No, wouldn't do that, but I wouldn't hesitate to have a private scan if you can afford it (mine was less than £100, I think).

RealLifeIsForWimps · 03/12/2011 23:19

Sorry- I missed the lying bit as well. In that case, no I wouldn't lie to get it for the reasons mentioned above. NHS has limited resources and they need to be given to those most in need.

goingmadtrying · 03/12/2011 23:46

Thank you everyone:) I think I felt uncomfortable lying about it which is why I posted on here, the pains have definately subsided although do keep getting a sharp twinge on my left side but mainly when I stand up Hmm.

In terms of multiple pregnancy dh mum is a triplet, and one of her nephews had twins, also my uncle has had twins so lots of lines to come from:)

I'll see how the pains are and if not too bad see my midwife at booking appointment on 15th hopefully everything will be ok :)

Yes definitely Blush

LoveInAColdClimate · 04/12/2011 08:14

If you're still getting the twinges may be worth getting checked out anyway, just in case. Good luck!

goingmadtrying · 04/12/2011 08:17

Thanks love. I had a bit of pinky cm last night and cervix feels very low like in af so think something maybe going wrong :(

OP posts:
LoveInAColdClimate · 04/12/2011 08:27

Really do try not to worry. I had awful AF like cramps for most of
my first trimester and bleeding at 15 weeks and am now 25 weeks and all looking good. Hope the same for you. Good luck.

galwaygal · 04/12/2011 21:17

Goingmadtrying, - I think that early scans can add more stress than relieve it. I don't think that going for a scan before 8 weeks is worth it, unless there is a risk of ectopic. Also as others have said, with the risk of twins, it would be less stressful to not know about a vanishing twin if it were to happen.

Sorry that you had some pinky cm, it does not mean that it is going wrong necessarily, and I hope that your pregnnacy continues in a non-stressful way from now on for you. If you are over 8 weeks then with the cramping and spotting, a scan might reassure you. If under 8 weeks, then try to rest and keep hoping for a good pregnancy.

Hope it all goes well for you.
