Oh hell - they've admitted me

I was so smug that I'd finally got them to take my 16 weeks of headaches and migraines seriously. I had an appointment at the consultant clinic today and they've admitted me for an urgent neurological assessment.

I'm now so worried. I really wish I'd not said anything :(

There's going to be nothing wrong right? I've caused a fuss for nothing.

Hello - just wondered how you are getting on today? Hope you get some answers

ImpYCelynAndTheIvy · 07/12/2011 09:32

Well I phoned the community midwives, who told me to phone the FAU - who have never seen me, so I'm not sure how they'll be able to help...

When I got off the phone with them the PALS lady phoned to ask what it said in my notes, as she'd phoned the ante-natal team and they said that there was nothing in my hospital notes about a referral. So I told her that my notes say OP assessment by neurology and she's going to speak to the OBs consultant's secretary.

The whole thing is just farcical Angry

Cross-posted DeckTheHawthers - thanks for asking! It's not going well with them, but I'm feeling a bit better, so that's a plus :)

Imp - did the vomiting start when you took codeine? That could be it.

Hope you get some answers today and are feeling much better soon

Hey Impy glad you are feeling better. Sounds like PALS are getting on the case, which is good - at least you have someone working on your behalf. What a farce there's no record of your referral at the hospital, if you hadn't have chased it you'd never have got one by the sound of it. Hopefully the consultant OB will feel embarrassed and speed things up for you...

ImpYCelynAndTheIvy · 07/12/2011 09:53

Thanks Finally :)

I haven't actually taken any codeine yet, I've managed to control them with what I already had (MWs told me to avoid the codeine unless I was in agony, so I'm a bit wary). The vomiting seems to have been it's own thing, so I think either a bug or stress. Saturday and Sunday digestive system in general was a bit upset iyswim Blush. One half has settled down but the N/V still there. Just nausea today so far though.

I really hope PALS can get back to me, they've been the most useful so far.

Thanks HotPinkGingham. I can't believe what a huge cock up the whole thing has been. PALS told me yesterday they couldn't believe I'd been admitted to see a neurologist as the chances of seeing one at short notice, even as an inpatient, if I wasn't actually having a stroke were basically non-existant Hmm

Sorry to hear of your struggles, what a hard time it sounds like you've had!

I have suffered from headaches and migraines since my early 20's - now in my mid 30's - so about 15 years. For me, hormones are a big trigger as my worst migraines would come right before or during my period. And the brief time I spent on the pill was an absolute hell.

I'm 24 weeks now and had excruciating migraines and tension headaches (which could easily lead to migraine attacks) non stop up until about 15-17 weeks. Thankfully they began to ease off, and now I've not had one in 7 weeks - bliss! So hoping they ease off for you as well.

I always vomit a lot and feel very nauseous during migraine attacks. Try to lay in the dark with an ice pack on the head. Codeine may help a little but for me it makes the nausea worse and the headache often comes back stronger after the drug wears off. The only effective medication for my migraines is sumatriptan, which is unfortunately contraindicated in pregnancy.

Most importnant - stay off the computer, don't look at screens, watch telly, read books / magazines, etc. For me these are the worst aggravators. Even just an hour or so of computer work can turn my rotten but manageable tension headache into 72 hour full blown migraine hell. I kept distracted with audio books and radio when I was feeling unwell.

I hope you get some help and feel better soon!

imp, you poor thing, all sounds like lots of ringing round and extra stress for you. Hope your mum is helping again with some child care so you can rest. I found it hard enough to cope with a 3 day headache so no idea how you're managing all this. I hope PALS get back to you with something useful. Xx

ImpYCelynAndTheIvy · 08/12/2011 18:46

Mitsouko - thank you for all the advice. I've been headache free for 4 days now, which is a record, so fingers crossed!

Mum had DS yesterday afternoon, which was great. I had him the whole day today which was exhausting, but my job, so I'd better start getting back on track with it I think.

Still have terrible nausea though, and no appetite.

Unfortunately I've had no news at all from the hospital. I'm going to call PALS again tomorrow and see if they've heard anything.

Do keep on at them. Great news you are feeling better, but even so if you were supposed to see a neurologist then you should get to see one! How rubbish you were admitted for no reason too.

If you are feeling exhausted don't be shy of accepting your mum's help (or anyone else's for that matter) - sounds like you've been through the ringer, and even without the headaches, feeling sick all the time is enough to make you need to take to your bed (I remember it well! Luckily it stopped at 16 weeks and hopefully won't be back this time...).

xx

Nothing from the hospital. I'm going to be a rather more irate patient when I speak to them on Monday.

And today DS has thrown up all over his cot, his toys and his bedroom floor. Then he had diarrhoea, which leaked all over the living room carpet. And then he threw up on the sofa.

Plus he's started pulling at/poking his ears and keeps hitting the side of his head.

So I think I'm about to have another ill baby session :(

And why does it always kick off on a Friday afternoon when there's no easy access to GPs :(
