Ive been at a course with work and I ate broccoli and cauliflower bake. It wasnt until I was 1/4 of the way through I realised that it tasted funny, I then clicked what it was. They had used stilton to make the cheese sauce.

Im trying not to worry as its done now and dont they eat blue cheese in pregnancy in France. But I cant help stressing about it.
Someone reassure me that it'll be ok.
What are the risks of listeria?

Minimal

There are women out there who do Cocaine when they are PG, relax, did you enjoy it ???

fastasleep · 06/01/2006 21:29

I ate loads of things I shouldn't with my second and she's fiiiine

They do happily eat it in France! It's a lot of bother about nothing! IMO..

misdee · 06/01/2006 21:29

very minimal risks.

harpsichordcarrier · 06/01/2006 21:30

IIRC the risks are much reduced if the cheese is cooked - that's what I was told anyway
presumably the heat of cooking deals with the listeria?
bumping thisanyway

mrsflowerpot · 06/01/2006 21:30

you'll be fine. and it was cooked anyway so you will be double fine.

fastasleep · 06/01/2006 21:31

Mmmm don't you just fancy some pate/runny eggs/more cheese/tuna/cheesecake! (what's with the tuna now, FGS!), I ate all those in copious quantities, I admit it I was a terrible mother before I even gave birth!

mrsflowerpot · 06/01/2006 21:34

I craved camembert for a while with dd, nightmare. I did give in to it cooked a couple of times. I found using the 'do they eat it in France?' test very useful, because the answer was invariably 'yes'.

madmarchhare · 06/01/2006 21:35

My SIL has been told not to eat mozzarella!

motherinferior · 06/01/2006 21:35

It was cooked, that kills the listeria, don't worry.

Marina · 06/01/2006 21:37

Cooked cheese = listeria-safe, honest. Please don't worry kbaby.

Marina · 06/01/2006 21:37

Snap MI

pupuce · 06/01/2006 22:01

And the French do eat blue cheese in pregnancy.... NO WORRY AT ALL!

notasheep · 06/01/2006 22:16

kbaby- dont worry-much better for you than heroin or Cannabis

jenthehen · 06/01/2006 22:21

This sounds dreadful but when pregnant with ds1 I went skiing in switzerland and ate loads of the swiss cheese, only on the last day of the holiday did I find out it was unpasteurised. DS is now 4, he is a real daredevil and hates cheese - did it affect him? I'm not sure.

mummytosteven · 06/01/2006 22:49

Given it will have been cooked, am sure it will be fine.

re:cheesecake. fine if it's made with pasteurised egg (some of M & S, definitely are, guess which paranoid PG lady checked the labels )

Aloha · 06/01/2006 22:50

Cooked cheese is always OK. it kills the bacteria. IN fact, if you crave a blue cheese hit, cooking it is a great way to get it. So you can simply stop worrying.

Aloha · 06/01/2006 22:51

Also unpasteurised cheese is absolutely fine as long as it is hard.

jamiesam · 06/01/2006 22:58

Ooh, looks like Aloha gives the best advice - OK if cooked. I believe it causes flu like symptoms if you did get it but sounds highly unlikely.

My bf ate dodgy cheese, pate, drank copious quantities of wine and smoked like a trouper in weeks 4 - 5 1/2 (holiday in France!) before she did pg test after ttc for around 3 yrs - her ds is now 6 yrs old .

queenoffe · 06/01/2006 23:02

They have to warn you about the minute risk of listeria otherwise in our twisted ways you could sue the pants off someone. I agree with my mum.. its not listeria but histeria about nothing.

Ate the whole damn lot when pg, and still say stuff the daily mail attitute that brings this sort of worry about. Up to you though ofcourse, but i think its more important to avoid the cortisone and let it go.

kbaby · 08/01/2006 17:04

thanks you everyone for the advice. i feel loads better.

Is it really true that stilton is ok when cooked? I do hope so ...does that mean I can have blue cheese sauce on things? please say yes, please, please, please

polly28 · 09/01/2006 13:43

bloody hell I ate all sorts of evil things when I was pregant.....it's all hysteria imo

Easy · 09/01/2006 13:51

Aggie, it's no problem, honestly.

The risk of Listeria from blue cheese is tiny minute anyway (as others on here have proved), but once it has been cooked that risk is totally gone, as listeria is very heat sensitive.

BTW I didn't know that I shouldn't eat prawns or smoked salmon when PG, so merrily carried on whenever the opportunity arose. DS now 6 LOVES both these foods.

AggiePanther · 09/01/2006 17:34

Excellent!! Am off to tesco's then!
