Music in labour...?

So I had my tour of the labour ward at the weekend and they said that when you are in a delivery room, you are allowed to play music if you want to.

Just wondering what sort of music you had on your ipod? I don't really know if the sound of whales etc would help me or whether i'd rather listen to a bit of spice girls haha.

What are your thoughts / were your experiences?

Thanks

I'm pregnant with my first and hypnobirthing so will just have my relaxation music on that I've been using all through my practice. DH isn't keen on it but I love it, can listen to it all day, so relaxing. It's only about 10 minutes long so I'll just have it on loop.
We'll have our ipod there though and "Perfect Day" was on the radio this morning, the version that came out when DH and I started going out together in 1997. We also had a dance to it at our wedding and I thought the lyrics "you're going to reap just what you sew" were so apt for our lives right now with the baby coming. I was daydreaming about putting it on after the baby had come and I almost cried whilst listening and thinking about it but had a mouth full of branflakes at the time :)
I won't do this though as the baby loves the relaxation music so I'll just keep that on but it was a nice little daydream :)

Personaly I would have hated it and would have found it annoying.

I hate relaxation music. They have it at the salon when I go for a massage and I have to tell them to turn it off as it completely winds me up.

If you like that sort of thing go for and have it.

I've not been told about music - are you allowed to choose your own as standard? It would help to stop the hospital room feeling less like a hospital. I really don't need/want to hear other labouring women screaming before I've got to that stage myself....

Do you think they limit the type of music you bring in? And do you bring cds or an ipod?

Sorry if I sound dense - as I said, no-one has mentioned this to me before.

BTW, I would go for S&M by Metallica. Surprisingly soothing, and it was the soundtrack to our wedding. Orchestral.

I've told DH he has to play me something cheerful on the piano. Grin
(obviously this will be at home - i don't think we'd be able to take a piano into a hospital with us! Wink )

Whether this plan will work in real life, I don't know.
might be worth having some Bluetones or Beautiful South records ready...

viking lady they told us at the hospital that you are allowed to take in either an i pod and speakers or cd player and could pretty much play what would make you feel comfortable as long as it couldn't be heard outside of your delivery room :) I just can't decide what type of music I would like...not sure about metallica though ;)

Viking - I love the idea of s&m!

I'm expecting my first and have been doing Natal Hypnotherapy so I plan to take the "hippy" music which accompanies that. But I will also just take my iPod with a selection of my favourites on it just incase the hypno-music starts to wind me up!

spannermary · 29/11/2011 14:13

Ah wow - I LOVE the idea of Metallica in the delivery room!! Excellent...

VikingLady · 29/11/2011 15:25

Been trying the hynobirthing cds, but they wind me up - so bland! I reckon anything that relazxes me would do the same thing, but Nick Cave might be too depressing...

Like the idea of taking a piano in nickelbabe. I guess you are right, it would be tricky getting it through the doors...

I couldn't bear any sounds or music when in labour as I needed to go into myself. DH even got a ticking off for breathing too loudly at one point! I don't remember being aware of noises coming from other labouring mums that I needed to block out
