I just the cute little boy who was born at 10.5lbs...surely that isn't that big? Then again I did just turn over and this is my first pregnancy Hmm

muriel76 · 25/11/2011 21:55

Big babies are lovely! And they sleep really well too.

I'm not watching the programme tho, didn't even realise it was on.

10.5 is big but not that big?!

4madboys · 25/11/2011 22:12

i think technically anything over 9lbs something is counted as big. i cant remember the exact weight.

the average weight of a newborn is 7lb 8oz? i think, or maybe 7lb 6oz.

mine were 8lb 7oz, 9lb 3oz, 9lb 5oz, 10lb 13oz! and then dd was a teeny 8lb exactly.

i didnt find that size made any difference to sleep tho!

i saw this ages ago and was a bit Hmm about it.

mine were all natural births, the biggest in a birthing pool one hour from start to finish!

PamBeesly · 25/11/2011 22:19

4madboys you are my hero those babies all natural, big boys! It can be done!

PontyMython · 25/11/2011 22:22

Didn't know there was a programme on it. My DS was 11lbs 12oz, easy birth though as it was my 2nd. Was something of a celebrity in the ward after, I have to admit that really helped me through the crazy first week (due to his size and quick birth he had jaundice/blood sugar issues)

He is now a totally normal 2yo, birth weight (unless really low/premie baby) doesn't really seem relevant.

PontyMython · 25/11/2011 22:24

Why is the show shocking btw, I can't watch it as I don't have tv connected. Are they talking about torn fanjos or something?

banana87 · 25/11/2011 22:46

Did you see the two women with "big" toddlers feeding them chips or other fried foods? No wonder that little boy is 3 years old and 5 stone Sad

GwendolineMaryLacey · 25/11/2011 22:49

Complete twattery along the usual daily mail lines of this WILL happen and that WILL happen. Not informative, just scaremongering sensationalist bollocks.

And quite what the 5 stone child has to do with anything is beyond me. He's not that size because he was large at birth ffs, it's because he is fed twice a day on chip shop pie and chips.

PontyMython · 26/11/2011 00:02

Oh. that kind of documentary.

Moominsarescary · 26/11/2011 00:49

My eldest was 11lb 2oz and I couldn't eat all the way through the pg due to sickness, I was admitted a few times and put on a drip. Some baby's are just big.

yummicheddars · 26/11/2011 09:03

I watched this! Shocked me abit! I thought my little boy was a chubby chops at 7.14! It has made me think twice about feeding my 2 year old chips tho..even if he has em once or twice a week. Hhmm! But I must say, them big newborn babies looked VERY cuddly!! :D

PontyMython · 26/11/2011 09:24

I found my 2nd pregnancy a nightmare, I think because he was so big. That's what's put me off having a third actually, not the birth. Especially as they say subsequent babies are often bigger Confused

The dr did say I may have had GD - I had the GTT at 28wks which came back clear, but she said I may have developed it later on. We had no idea he'd be so big, probably a good thing as I know many people who've been forced into CS because of big babies, and the birth was a good one. The only bad thing was that he came out quite fast (unlike DD who was stuck in the birth canal for 2hrs) and as a result had jaundice and a swollen face. He looked a bit like a bulldog :o

What really annoyed me though was that so many people said I'd need to FF as breastmilk wouldn't possibly satisfy a big baby Hmm and that I'd need to wean him onto solids early. I did neither of these.

banana87 · 26/11/2011 09:34

I'm a size 10 and have big babies. I don't eat crap during pregnancy either, it's just my genetics I guess. Really don't get why they were trying to insinuate that obese women make big babies Hmm

samwellsbutt · 26/11/2011 09:36

this baby is 5 weeks bigger than it should be and since my last was 10.5 we are expecting another big one but the attitude is very different this time round all very. oh this isnt good, lets get you in for a scan. last time it was just you have big babies thats fine.

MissRee · 26/11/2011 10:20

I thought it strayed away from the big babies theme and much much more towards obese mothers... surely that's a whole separate programme!

4madboys · 26/11/2011 14:18

i am a size 10-12 and had big babies, but small bumps each time, i dont know where they were in there! even the midwives were suprised once hte babies were delivered at how big they were, plus i had huge placentas as well. they are all now tall boys, but not big weight wise, 2 are very skinny actually and the other 2 normal weight.

interestingly they thought my first three babies would be small predicted 6-7lb at the biggest!! umm 9lb+ then with ds4 they jsut thought another 9lb but he was almost 11lb.

then dd they said would be big, but she only 8lb and i told them that she was smaller, i could feel that i wasnt carrying a big baby but they didnt believe me. bizarrely her birht was the hardest and she was the smallest of my 5. whereas no 4 was the biggest and his the easiest, a water birth :)

what they did say was that obese women often have small babies but these babies then 'catch up' quickly and go on to become big babies/toddlers etc, that of course could be more to do with diet etc.

PontyMython · 26/11/2011 14:27

I found some reactions a little hurtful - I was already upset as DS had blood sugar problems due to his size, and I was worried this was my fault. Some family friends etc were saying I'd obviously fed him up well in pregnancy. I was worried it was all my fault, that he was under the blue light thing because of me eating too much or something (even though I couldn't eat much when he was inside) but thankfully the doctor told me it wasn't that simple. People's misconceptions can be quite upsetting though especially when you're a postnatal hormonal wreck!
