Headaches :(

Hiya I'm 17 + 5 weeks and for almost the last 2 weeks I keep experiencing quite bad headaches :( they are something I never got pre pregnany. Could it simply be tiredness or hormones or something else. Iv read headaches in the 3rd trimester can indicate pre ecclamp but would this be an indication in the 2nd? gosh what's happened to the days where a headache was a headache and nothing to worry or post on a forum about!

GP
They will say paracetemol but they also gave me ibuprofen gel which is ok to rub on forehead and back of neck

MrsHoarder · 25/11/2011 07:24

Midwife told me at the 16week appointment I should get headaches in the next 2-3 weeks, its just hormonal changes and will pass.

ImpYCelyn · 25/11/2011 07:27

I've had migraines since 5 weeks and am now 20 weeks (including one last week that lasted 6 days) :(

So far I've been told just paracetamol, paracetamol + ibuprofen if desperate (I wouldn't recommend that as it is contraindicated, I only tried it the once and it didn't help anyway) and finally co codamol.

I've also been referred to see a consultant now to see if there's anything else they can do.

But no one is so far worried that it's a sign of anything sinister, they just think it's hormones.

It's really easy to dehydrate when you're pregnant, so try to drink absolutely as much as you can. If that doesn't help then you should definitely talk to your MWs. Are you seeing them soon? If not, do you have a non-emergency contact number for them? It's worth calling them and then they can make you an extra appointment to check BP etc.

I suffered from them pretty badly from 16-20 weeks. I drank loads 3-4L minimum a day & got some migraine gel patches & rested lots. It was horrible.

I did tell the MW who wasn't worried. Just another pregnancy thing apparently!

Hope you feel better.

I'm 36 weeks now and get migraines. Take patacetamol regularly, and you can also use 4head which is really good. Also try ice in a flannel where it really hurts.

I did literally drink one away the other night. The doc said you need to drink LOTS when preg, more than you think! So I drank 4 pints of squash over one evening, and yes I spent a lot of time waddling to the loo, but it really worked. I've been making myself drink more since.

If they're really bad, you can take cocodamol. I have spd and been taking it for weeks.

Thanks all, sounds Like headaches are pretty common around this stage of pregnancy! will try drinking lots more, I am def drinking more than usual but maybe that's still not enough. X

Hi all, I'm 6+3 and have been getting regular bad headaches/migraines for the past few weeks.

Good to know from the posts above that taking pain killers is ok, I've been trying to sleep and drink them away (water naturally)!

Hope all your heads ease soon. xxxx

I had migraines during my first pregnancy - had never had them before, and never since!

Best thing is to make sure that you take paracetamol at the very first sign of a headache. Don't wait or try and put up with it.

tentative123 · 03/12/2011 17:28

Just to add- it gets better!!! I had 4 awful weeks of it was signed of work, got better at maybe 19 weeks and now not a blink at 27 weeks since then. If that makes sense!!

H0zzy · 03/12/2011 17:42

thanks for the tips BIWI and tentative123 much appreciated Xmas Smile

Jules125 · 03/12/2011 18:32

Hi headaches are common in pregnancy (with nothing being wrong - I don't want to really worry you) but have you had your blood pressure checked recently? Even though pre-eclampsia is very very rare at this stage of pregnancy, sometimes blood pressure can start to rise earlier (even before 20 weeks). So if you keeping getting the headaches please get your MW or MAU to check that out.

justhayley · 03/12/2011 18:33

Grin I'm now 19 weeks and the feeling my head was about to explode has finally gone - hopefully for good. Thanks for ur input hope your all well xx

Thanks Jules,

I have my first mw appointment next week so I'll add that to the list. This is my third pregnancy following 2 early miscarriages so I'm currently spending all my days waiting for the wheels to fall off so to speak so I wouldn't be at all surprised if the old bp is up.

Thanks for the tip xx

H0zzy · 03/12/2011 19:02

oh and I've just had a pain killer, bliss!

sunshinesue · 03/12/2011 20:21

I've not had any pregnancy headaches yet but I do tend to get them quite regularly and I swear by peppermint tea. I've found it works quicker and is more effective than most painkillers.
