Cot bed Bedding

Why does everything confuse me so much!?! I don't get it, you buy a room set that all looks lovely and everything matches... and then it gets dirty... Do people buy 2 lots of the same bedding sets to have one spare?? Because they cost a bloody fortune!! And how many of each thing for the cot do I need?

I know I sound ridiculous. I am ridiculous. Am still feeling emotional about frozen planet last night with the baby penguins so I'm blaming that on my sudden upset about bloody cots and cot bedding!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, I just washed & tumble dried it the same day, or if I couldnt, I had a couple of spare cot sheets & blankets, most of those bed in a bag sets have a coverlet & fleece which is too warm for my house, I used to use a fleece & cellular or coverlet & cellular & alternated.

I have a very cunning plan for this - i have my 'good' set which cost a wee bit and will be used 90% of the time specially when anyone is over visiting so i can show them my oh so gorgeous nursery and then i've bought i plain blue set that was a lot cheaper for wash days, it still goes with everything just now quite as pretty... i am obsessed :)

LikeACandleButNotQuite · 25/11/2011 00:31

Ive just gone for a handful of plain sheets and cellular blankets. Im really not a fan of the whole bumper, covrlet, coordinating sheets thing, mainly as they are pricey!

hubbahubster · 25/11/2011 06:01

You may buy all this stuff only to find that baby kicks his covers off and prefers sleeping bags. Just saying...

MrsRV · 25/11/2011 07:15

Thanks ladies, I've just been reading that bumpers and coverlets aren't advised... So just blankets and sheets then?

With regards to the above cot bumper issue... I have bought (from ebay) a breathable cot bumper which allows the baby to breath through the bumper if he/she does roll over against it... could'nt stand the thought of his head pressed against the wooden bars all night without one!!!

The cot bed itself I have 4 cream fitted sheets, cellular blankets (3 for price of 2 in M&P...great quality) & then for show only really a posh blanket that matches the cot mobile. I am afraid a victim of it all has to match syndrome!! But the sets are just so expensive & if you have the cot matress on the higher level some bumpers on some cots are too deep to sit in it anyway & the duvet in the set is not reccommended for babies under a year... so bit of a false economy really.

Pascha · 25/11/2011 07:33

We have a matching set ... It lives under the cot. It hasn't gone back on since the Boy started sleeping in it at 4 months, he's now 14 months. All we use is sheets and grobag.

MrsRV · 25/11/2011 07:42

So in Moses basket what should you use? Sheets and blanket?

Then in cot bed, sheets and blankets or sleeping bag? Then after a year or so quilt might be ok?

I'm torn on the bumper... Don't want baba getting caught up or suffocated but do they ever bang heads and little arms and legs on bare bars? Or get stuck in bars?

Why is everything so bloody difficult???

It's probably going to be a while before the LO is rolling. When they're tiny they mostly stay where you put them (if you can ever put them down - they seem to be able to sense these things Grin).

We never had bumpers - had read that they were dangerous unless you got the breathable mesh ones. We used cot bed sheets and grobag (or similar own brand - matalan and primark are your friends here) sleeping bags then pillow and duvet once the sleeping bags were outgrown (approx 2 yrs old). We didn't go for too much expensive, matching stuff because it all gets covered in sick, poo and wee anyway. That's babies for you.

The good thing about sleeping bags is you can do last feed already in them so they warm up and then it's easier to transfer to the cot bed. Also less likely to have a nappy leak through clothes and sleeping bag onto sheets.

She did occasionally get her leg/arm stuck through the bars and need rescuing, but that was several months down the line, when we'd had to drop the cot to its bottom setting (after she could sit up/move a bit) so bumpers wouldn't have helped.

We still have an unused, wrapped fleecy blanket that MIL bought before she was born. Just never had an opportunity to use it.

LikeACandleButNotQuite · 25/11/2011 08:06

For the moses basket, maybe look into swaddling. I have got 4 swaddling muslins and intend to wrap LO in those and plonk it into the basket

Then, if very cold, a small blanket over the top.

Pascha · 25/11/2011 08:07

We used sheet and cellular blanket in the crib til the Boy was big enough for a grobag. You might find you swaddle at first so this is enough, with a blanket over if it's extra cold.

The coverlets and bumpers are decoration really, to make it all look lovely before you use it properly. Nothing wrong in that Smile.

I would buy a pack of fitted sheets and a couple of cellular blankets for the Moses basket, you may find you don't use it for long, many babies hate them (mine included, which is why we got a crib instead)

I've only got fitted sheet x3 to cover mattress and my DS where's a grobag. I'll buy bedding when he's older. I recommend having spares though for vomiting incidents.

notcitrus · 25/11/2011 09:12

I have 3 sheets for the cot bed (1 nice one and two wierd puce ones), then ds was in a fleecy blanket and/or grobag until nearly 3, when we got a flattish pillow and fullsize single duvet and covers - initially tucked half the duvet under and folded over the open side to stop him falling out, now fold 1/3 under the foot of the mattress so he can tuck himself in after going to the potty in the night.

In the moses basket, we had one fitted sheet and then used pillowcases on it, again with ds in blankets or grobag.

I still have no idea what a cot bumper or coverlet is! Ds loved curling round his bars in what looked like uncomfortable ways, but if he was asleep we left him to it.

samwellsbutt · 25/11/2011 09:27

bumpers are bad now??? oh ffs!

fhdl34 · 25/11/2011 15:33

We've got a crib for the bedroom and using the pram carrycot downstairs in a moses basket stand and we've bought 4 flat sheets to use between the two. We haven't put our cot together yet but I don't know whether we'll go for fitted or flat sheets with that, haven't decided and in any case, baby won't be in it until he/she is in her own room at 6 months. Also got 3 grobags from ebay (as they're so pricey new) and some white/cream blankets (cellular and fleece). I don't go in for the all matching thing, I don't even have a border in the room the baby will eventually sleep in but they do have a mobile as that will help the baby's development.

KatAndKit · 25/11/2011 16:10

I thought cot bumpers had been advised against for some time.

They won't get their head stuck in the bars as cot manufacturers have to put the bars close enough together to prevent this.

samwellsbutt · 25/11/2011 21:06

shows how much attention i pay.

boohome · 25/11/2011 22:20

We got rid of the bumper for the crib when DS was about 8 weeks old after I caught him trying to eat it in the middle of the night - I woke up because he was crying, and then he stopped, and when I went to look at him, he'd somehow managed to hook his arm under it and was busy pressing his face into it and trying to suck it.

Breathable bumpers or not, I didn't think that looked at all healthy. We didn't see any guidance about not using bumpers till after this.

And DS loves sticking his arms out through the bars.

RockChick1984 · 27/11/2011 01:20

Just one other point about bumpers, you are advised baby must sleep feet to foot of the cot, so bumper is nowhere near baby anyway if they roll over they will still bash their head on the bars! I bought the full matching set of everything and really wish I hadn't wasted my money - the quilt obviously mustn't be used for a long time yet, the bumper is now taken out as ds was trying to stand on it to climb out the cot (!!!) and the sheets are identical to the cheap blue tesco ones we got as spares! Although it did look gorgeous showing off the nursery while I was pregnant..... Grin

MrsRV · 27/11/2011 08:39

I feel cheated by the baby shops... I thought the bumper set was like a must have... What a load of old shit Grin

I was just shocked at how expensive the sets had become in 9 years since I last bought everything!! ... back then was trying to keep up with a friend who had a beautiful nursery... so we spent thousands in M&P on furniture & decorations.. The 1 & only thing I found kind of useful was the nappy stacker, the rest could have not been there or come from any shop!!!

This time round (oh how life changes!!) I am a single parent, baby will be in my room for the next couple of years I fear unless I win the lottery & have had to do everything on a tight budget!!
