18 weeks - shouldn't I be feeling some movement sensations? Fluttering, etc?

Just a bit worried because have heard quite a people say that they felt "movements" and flutterings as early as the 16 week point, and quite frankly, I have felt diddly -squat. I am currently 18 weeks. Have had a few twinges and some wind, but nothing that could be construed as a movement, I don't think?

I really wouldn't worry. I am 20+4 and have only just started to feel the merest hint of fluttering. It could be to do with the position of your placenta: mine is anterior (front) high, which can be where some of the kicks are felt.

I've read movement usually starts 'between 18-22 weeks' and that it's later with the first child, as you don't really know what it feels like.

I'm a first-timer and still convincing myself what I've felt today and yesterday is real!

There's always something to worry about, isn't there...and it ain't going to stop at birth!

Congrats!

I have an anterior placenta too and am pg with my first. Was around 20 weeks when I thought I started to feel anything but looking back I think some of this may have been wishful thinking.

ChineapplePunk · 24/11/2011 19:17

Yes, it's my first. Was worrying like a mad woman before the 12 week scan because I was convinced they were going to tell me there was nothing there. I promised myself I wouldn't worry after the 12 week scan came and went without a hitch. Now, I am due my 20 week scan next week and have convinced myself again that something will be wrong. I think I may be placing to much emphasis on movements and drawing all sorts of silly conclusions because of the lack of them at this point. Silly moo.

It's very normal not to feel your first until after your 20wk scan, you'll be able to watch your baby wiggling away on the screen and not feel a thing!!

I'm on dc4 and felt them really early this time, was surprised how early despite having an anterior placenta.

melliebobs · 24/11/2011 21:38

i wouldn't worry. My mw said with your first it can be anything up to 22 weeks till you feel anything

ChineapplePunk · 24/11/2011 21:45

Cheers all. Feeling better. :)

22 weeks was when I felt the first movement with my first, then about 19-20 weeks with the second. Hope you feel more reassured from people's experiences.

Biscuitsandtea · 24/11/2011 22:31

Hi, I'm 22+2 with dc2 and even now only getting flutterings. I do have an anterior placenta this time. With ds I think it was still about 20 weeks before I felt much.

I would say in the last day or 2 the flutterings have occasionally felt a little more pronounced, and I tend to get something each day, which is reassuring me slightly but I do know what you mean about just feeling worried about not feeling anything.

I am sure you'll feel something soon but good luck for your scan next week.

tentative123 · 24/11/2011 22:45

I didnt feel anything much until 22 weeks... anterior placenta too. Nothing to worry about but it does make you impatient!!!

justhayley · 24/11/2011 22:58

I'll be 18 weeks on saturday am am yet to feel anything i can say is a movement

HardCheese · 24/11/2011 23:43

I'm 22+3 in my first pregnancy and I have to say that it's only really in the past week or so that I've definitely begun feeling distinct movements - I have a high anterior placenta. Don't worry, Chineapple. Very soon, you'll be trying to get to sleep while your baby does some kind of Jane Fonda workout!

DorcasGailen · 25/11/2011 06:08

Chineapple I was nearly 24 weeks until I felt anything definite, like you I worried before each and every scan, totally normal!

KittieCat · 25/11/2011 06:30

I didn't feel any movent until almost 22 weeks. Have a healthy 11 mo DS now. Easier said than done, but try to relax and enjoy your pregnancy. I also found it really helpful to pay attention to my baby's movements further down the line so I knew what was 'normal' movement for him, as he was always a bit lazy on the inside! That said when feeling the movement starts please never hesitate to contact your midwife if things go quiet.
Have a happy and healthy pregnancy!

Hi 20 weeks with DC1, this time i'm 21+3 and only feel the odd flutter i have an anterior placenta aswell. i always think that some people never know they are pregnant till they give birth so they can't have been getting the huge rib cracking kicks,
Plus i'm growing to the size of a house so not too worried, but if your concerned the midwife will check heartbeat any time for you.

BalloonSlayer · 25/11/2011 08:06

I think my book said that you didn't feel the first till 20 weeks or so, and subsequent ones later.

My first I didn't feel till about 21 weeks . . . my second was about the same and I was very disappointed and worried as I'd been convinced I'd feel it earlier)

(My third I felt at 13 weeks though! was amazed as I thought I had an insensitive tummy or something)

BalloonSlayer · 25/11/2011 08:06

"and subsequent ones earlier " that was supposed to say Blush

VintageNancy · 25/11/2011 10:12

Just to buck the trend - I'm pregnant with my first and felt the slightest flutterings at around 16 weeks and more pronounced kicks at about 19 weeks. I have a posterior placenta though and you might find at your scan that yours is at the front. Now at 21 weeks I'm getting lots of kicks. Usually after eating and when I'm sitting quietly in the evenings. Your baby might be doing kung fu at night when you're asleep so you won't notice it.

Everyone is different - I was chatting to a friend the other day and she didn't feel anything until 21 weeks and that was a definite kick, no flutterings for her.

russetbella1000 · 25/11/2011 12:33

As people have said if you have anterior placenta like me you'll feel less early on. I'm now 28 weeks and I still don't get flutterings (which sound rather lovely) mine are just 'movements'/rumblings like when I'm hungry...More recently I have felt more regular/stronger feelings which I guess is baby kicking.

It definitely has a rhythm too, very early in the morning after I first go to the loo then late at night I'm more aware.

I started feeling my baby literally on the day of my 18th week - really low down sensation that I could only feel when I was sat - not lay or stood and it feels like someone set a gold fish free down there
