Excess amniotic fluid?

I'm 31 weeks pregnant with DC2 and have been ridiculously uncomfortable for 2-3 weeks now. Had a MW appointment yesterday and the bump is measuring 4 weeks out... It's not just a measurement issue, my weight has gone up 10 pounds in the last 3 weeks too: the bump is massive. MW says she thinks the baby is average size, but that there's lots of amniotic fluid. I was an idiot and googled causes, wish I hadn't, but it's too late...

Anyway. just wondering if anyone's had this and what happened? Also, had a chat with the hospital (have been referred for a scan, will have it monday) and amongst other things they said that if the issue is "simply" too much fluid (they did say this is more likely than any of the problem scenarios) then there's the option of actually draining some out. While I'm sure this would make me way more comfortable, it also sounds drastic... Any thoughts?

Thank you so much, am climbing the walls...

I had this (can't remember the long word for it!), but try not to worry. Mine just went down on it's own accord by about week 36 I think. Good luck, and don't google please Smile

Thank you oops! It doesn't seem to be very common...
Fingers crossed.

I had that, my baby was measuring far too big from the sudden onflux of liquid and my tummy was enormously round and solid. I went into labour at 36 +4 and gave birth to a very happy and average sized baby :)

TheOriginalFAB · 25/11/2011 12:58

It is called polyhydromnious and I had it.

My advice it to keep a close eye on the baby's movements and go and get checked immediately if they change.

I have this too. Volume measuring 26cms and baby (at 34 weeks) is roughly 6lb 4...so they say. No one has said much about it though other than to monitor blood sugar as in my lardarsed case it could well be down to high blood sugars.

bezzyk · 25/11/2011 13:05

I have this too. 2 weeks ago I had a growth scan at 28 weeks and was found to have the right sized baby, but too much fluid. Have had many blood tests to rule out infection (called TORCH screening) as well as a Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) to rule out gestational diabetes. All of the above came back negative.

Am now 30 weeks and going for a follow up scan this evening to check what's going on.

Can recommend NOT googling as spent the first few days in tears, convinced that something really sinister was going on.

However, have read many, many stories on MN of women that also had it, and it was just 'one of those things'

Good luck x

I had it in my last pregnancy. The dr very helpfully told me all the worse case scenariosAngry. Thankfully I went into labour a couple of days later(was 38weeks0) while I was an impatient as I was having a ggt. All was fine, just lots of fulid when my waters broke!

Icanonlytry · 25/11/2011 13:55

I had this with DS now 5 months, I was HUGE. Mw sent me for growth scans, had one at 34 weeks which showed baby was average size and although there was a lot of fluid it was not causing any problems. Had another scan at 37 weeks to monitor the water and was still fine but told I was probably going to have Ds very soon rather than go to 40 weeks. Ds was born at 40+12 and is perfect, there was a lot of fluid when my waters broke but no other problems. Hope you are ok, try not to worry, I drove myself mad googling.

imip · 25/11/2011 17:49

I've also had this (also had the opposite, and more sinister, olihydramasis (sp?). No gd (though it was a blood test not gtt and I think that is pretty crap as in some countries/trusts a gtt is mandatory during every pregnancy). My waters broke at 38+1, one week before the planned c-section. There was a heck of a lot of fluid and a very average-sized baby.

bezzyk · 25/11/2011 17:50

Hi Brood, just back from scan, and fluid back down to normal. 2 weeks of freaking out for nothing! Hope yours resolves just as easily xx

Broodzilla · 25/11/2011 18:55

Thank you ladies, I feel a bit less alone now :)
Forgot to say it's not gd as I've had the GTT and it was fine.
This would definitely have been one of those "ignorance is bliss" times, but it's a bit late for that. It's going to be a loooong weekend before the scan. So glad yours was ok bezzyk!

I have a 2month old DS who was born early due to my high AFI of 35 Shock I was hige, measuring 46cms at 38weeks. I was admitted into hospital as the lie was so unstable, I was classed as a medical emergency.

I don't want to scare you OP, but it can be very dangerous if the fluid levels increase rapidly.

If you have polyhydramnious they should keep an extra eye on you (my hospital didnt and I transferred my care to the nearest city hospital).

Keep a close eye on your movements and should you have any signs of labour whatsoever you need to contact the hospital.

Breathlessness is also an issue, and I got told to go in if it became bad. It did become unmanageable but I was already admitted by then.

PH is not an issue if you are looked after properly so don't let them fob you off. In my instance, it took me googling for myself to find out what my rubbish hospital wouldn't tell me. without Google I'd never have transferred and been looked after.

Hope I havent scared you but wanted to make you aware that it can have serious implications if not with properly.

Ignorance is not bliss IMO.

I asked my really lovely and very good midwife today what it means and she said it was very common and no big deal. It really seems like we have to rely on google for information...

BelleRomford74 · 25/11/2011 22:21

My friend had it & very scarey when you google but I also remember reading these very important words..."The vast majority of women go on to have a healthy baby"!! :)

My friend had her fluid drained twice but each time it came back within 48 hours so she was told in all probability she would have an elective caesarian but she went on to have a natural delivery & a healthy baby.

Sending you best wishes.x

Just wanted to thank you all for your support! Just got back from the scan, all is well, and apparently at just under 32 weeks we're on the safer side now: just waiting for her to make an appearance!
