Advice on a lightweight & narrow framed pram/ travel system

Not due 'til March, so no immediate rush, but I'm hoping to find something secondhand so it could take a bit longer to hunt something out.

Basically my front door is fairly narrow and up an awkward step- also I'm not particularly strong, so I'm looking for something to make life as easy as possible. (I am however about 5ft9, so need something with handles that are high enough- DP a couple of inches taller).

My friend has a Phil & Ted Smart (with a 'peanut' carrycot) which fits in OK- I've also been in a shop & tried out a Pliko Pramette which I think would work.

This is my first baby & I'm wondering how many people buy a travel system & use it for several years, or if you tend to switch to a lighter weight stroller later on?

I've seen secondhand pramettes around the £50/60 mark locally- I'm thinking it could be an idea to get one of these for the first six months or so when the baby needs to be lying down, and then buy a slimline buggy once it's a bit older.

Any advice on particular lightweight/ slim models appreciated. I don't drive, so although I'll probably get a car seat to occasionally use in other people's cars, it's not all that important if it's part of a particular travel system or not...

Thanks! X

I've got a Red Castle pushchair, with a carrycot attachment. The pushchair bit is an umbrella pushchair just like Maclaren. Very light and narrow. It's a French brand though so I don'i know how easy it would be to find a secondhand one in the uk.

The carrycot part can go in cars too.

Maclaren XLR? Umbrella fold, can be combined with a soft cot and a car seat?

i just sold my bugaboo bee, its slim and light and i loved it so much!!! devastated to sell it but with baby 3 on board i needed a double!

A standard doorway is 76cm and most single pushchairs are around the 60cm so I doubt most wouldn't fit through your door.

If it really is that narrow, then the only slim non-umbrella style ones are the Bugaboo Bee/Bee+ and BabyStyle Oyster. And the Pliko, but I wouldn't recommend it at all. The Oyster would need the carrycot from birth as the seat's not quite flat. It's a very decent pushchair at a good price.

The Micralite Superlite is very light and you can get a carrycot for it. They're extremely cheap on eBay and push beautifully. It's also the sort of pushchair you could definitely use until you no longer need one.

Also, the Bugaboo Frog and Gecko are both narrow, lightweight and cheap. The basket can be difficult to access in pram mode though.

The Mutsy 4Rider Light is light (unsurprisingly!), but is 63cm wide.

If you want more advice, go over to the pushchair chat section. Smile

Thanks everybody- I'll take a good look at these- they include a few names that are new to me, too.

aswellasyou- my house is converted from a 200 year old warehouse, so it's just a bit higgledypiggledy- the door doesn't pull right back and you have to twist as you go up a steep step, that's why it's a bit awkward. Have you had a bad experience with the Pliko?
