Any idea if midwives are striking on the 30th ? Just had my sweep cancelled for that day because the clinic won't be open .

It's my due date , however I know its highly unlikely ill deliver that day .

Even when healthcare staff strike they still have to offer emergency cover, so if you do deliver on the day you wont be turning up to an unstaffed unit.

The RCM are 'supporting' the strike, but have not balloted for strike action.

There will be cover (regular not bank staff-that would be illegal) in the hospitals. Don't worry!

The Royal College of Midwives has not balloted for industrial action on the 30th. Some Midwives are members of other unions too so they may be on strike, but I think the majority are just in the RCM so will not be striking.

Just extending my sympathy as I'm in same position, I will be five days past due date and just heard that sweep is cancelled. Letter tells me appointment will be rescheduled 'sometime in December'. Brilliant. I am supporting the strike action, but now that I am directly affected I am feeling rather more selfish about it all!

iknow, you have my sympathies if your sweep is cancelled and you'll already be overdue . Let's hope it happens before hand.

My midwife is saying she may do me on Tuesday but is unsure as ill be 39+6 and she wants me at 40. I hoping one day won't matter .

I'm don't really have feelings either way about the strike , but it does make me feel nervous !

There will be cover for births at weekend/ bank holiday staffing levels which is why routine clinics such as your's have been cancelled - you wouldn't expect a clinic on a Sunday but it is still perfectly safe to give birth on Sundays.

MeconiumHappens · 24/11/2011 19:32

No, the mass majority wont be striking. In fact id be surprised if any do...

ciwi · 24/11/2011 20:08

As far as i know midwives and doctors are not striking however a lot of other staff will be such as radiographers, healthcare assistants, receptionists etc. They have probably cancelled non urgent clinics and appointments as the people who are working will be stretched more than usual and will need to focus on urgent care.

aethelfleda · 24/11/2011 20:13

Yeah, it's the support staff that may be striking- the actual front line doctors, nurses and midwives will all be in as usual. So from a delivery point of view it should be OK.
