No I had this. You should tell your midwife as it can mean something else - can't remember what it's called. They did a blood test on me but it was nothing - just itchy feet. I used some peppermint foot gel which helped a bit.

I had it at night, horrible! Making sure I drank enough water and ate less crisps seemed to help. Also keeping my feet up as much as possible.

Stogan · 22/11/2011 20:02

Oh god no I can't live without crisps lol !!!

Having a foot spa now to try to calm the burning down and then I've got some peppermint foot rub upstairs so gonna try that. Thanks girls x

Hi Stogan,

I was just like you when I was pregnant, at about 35 weeks my feet for about 2-3 weeks itched something cronic, I think pulling my hair out one by one would have been less intense.

I posted a message just like yours and was unindated with people telling me I must urgently go to my doctor as I could have a rare liver disease associated with pregnancy.

I was just glad I'd read in a magazine about it and it stated that yes itchy feet could be a sign of this rare liver disease but it was mostly only if accompanied with itching elsewhere.

I figured if there was something wrong with my liver I would be turning a funny shade of yellow; and after about 3 weeks of relentless itching it disappeared as quickly as it came.

I understand that you can't be too careful but seriously I just had itchy feet and thought someone might give me an idea of something I could have used.

Best thing I found that helped was a paddle hairbrush, lol, it scratched my feet without making them bleed (by using my nails).

xx

no real help but I had this throughout my pregnancy.

I have foot 'issues' normally, excema, chilblains, etc... but it was the constant itching, mainly at night that got worse as pregnancy went on.

I found that soaking them in warm water with a few drops of tea tree oil helped, this is what I would do pre-pregnancy when they were bad.

Unfortunately DS is now 3 wks old and they haven't got any better, if anything they're more of a mess and now that I can finally see my feet again I also seem to have a manky toenail!

You have my sympathy

Thanks nicky and noodie. Well I lost my rag with it yesterday so I went the docs and got 2 kinds of cream ( great getting free prescriptions while pg) and actually got a full nights sleep !! Hopefully this cream will sort my itching out otherwise I'll go crazy !!!

Thanks again xxx

Did they do a blood test as well? Because cholestasis of pregnancy (the rare liver disease) does actually happen to some people and is potentially dangerous for the baby.

Hopefully you're just itchy though :)

pommedechocolat · 25/11/2011 21:05

I just read on google that it can be a sign of increase of estrogen.

I have it too!

TheCornishPickle · 26/11/2011 04:28

I don't know what brought me on here, just browsing during a night feed but glad I saw this...

I had ONE night of itchy palms at 20 something weeks and no other symptoms but like someone has already said I'd read somewhere that this could be a sign of cholestasis. DH convinced me to go and get checked out and sure enough blood tests came back with higher levels of whatever it is showing I had obstetric cholestasis which can be dangerous for mothers and lead to stillbirth of untreated.

At first the hosp just monitored for a week but the next tests showed the levels had rocketed to really abnormal levels. AND I HAD NO FURTHER SYMPTOMS OR ITCHING. I was treated with a course of tablets which was effective and was closely monitored. Because of the risk to baby in late pregnancy I was induced at 37 weeks on the dot and have a beautiful, healthy ds.

PLEASE go and get checked out even if you have only one night of itching like I did. Outward symptoms can obviously be very mild even if your liver is really struggling as mine was.

NoobyNoob · 26/11/2011 18:36

Go and get it checked out. I'm one of the very unfortunate people that have cholestasis and it's a living nightmare.

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 26/11/2011 18:39

I too had this in pregnancy, it wasn't a sign of anything sinister in my case. The only thing that helped was getting dp to rub them with bodybutter, I used the stuff from the Body Shop, it felt nice and cool and seemed to help hte itch.

Stogan · 27/11/2011 08:08

Thanks all I'm at the midwife tomorrow so will speak to her about these various things as my feet are still really itchy !!! I wanna rip my toes off !!!! X
