Newborn clothes

Hi all. Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but basically am after some advice. We have 2 children and am expecting a third but don't want to know the sex until he/she arrives. I do want the baby to have a new outfit though, just a little tricky as all the clothes I have seen are either very girl/boy or a bit to pale in colour for me. Can anyone recommend some websites that sell newborn clothes that would suit a girl or a boy but aren't very pale in colour?

Hi Tilder Smile

That's a tricky one! But one I'd love to know the answer to as we are also having a surprise so would be nice for this bean to have something nice ready to go.

The only other idea I could think would be to send a kindly friend or relative to pick something up (maybe even something you've picked out in advance?) as soon as you know what flavour it is?

Or buy one boy and one girl outfit and keep the spare as a gift for someone?

Am I right in thinking you're due in Jan?

tilder · 22/11/2011 12:32

Hi biscuits. Due in Feb so do have a while. I was just having a look on line and apart from the obviously boy/girl clothes the choice tends to be very pale colours which I don't really go for - both mine so far have not suited white (DS1 was renowned for missing his nappy with poos and DS2 had reflux). Even tried boden (normally only do that on ebay or in the sale) but they all looked to be boy/girl specific. Might try one of each if I don't have any joy - good idea - but I do need to wash my kids clothes first otherwise they get eczema so I guess couldn't return any. I just feel number 3 should have somehting of their own and I find doing some preparation helps with getting ready for the birth and new arrival - just seems a bit extravagant when there is a loft full of clothes already.

How are you getting on?

Have you tried TK Maxx? We're having a surprise and picked up quite a few items of clothing which weren't basically light coloured. Walked through M&S yesterday and all the baby clothing was either pink, blue or white! It is a small M&S though that mainly does food.

duzida · 22/11/2011 12:58

polarnopyret.co.uk/
a bit expensive but really bright colours

and maybe greenbaby.com? although when I had a look just now it was a bit pink or blue...but I've bought some red and blue suitably nongender-specific stuff for our next DC in the past couple of months.

I remember last time we got some babygrows from John Lewis that were brightly coloured and sort of jungle animaly.

The blue or pink or yellowy-beige 'neutral' stuff does drive me mad, surely there are still quite a few people who don't want to find out the sex of the baby in advance and just want to get some nice baby stuff? Bah.

snowgal · 22/11/2011 13:04

We have no idea what were having but I bought this, this and this as the little ones treat outfits - everything else is secondhand so I felt justified to splash out! I think they're all pretty neutral

Iggly · 22/11/2011 13:06

Next have loads of brightly coloured clothes as do mothercare, just takes a bit of looking (online). I bought DD (due next month) some bright red elephant sleepsuits.

Iggly · 22/11/2011 13:09

M&S also have nice block coloured long/short sleeved popper vests which you could mix with bright trousers?

melliebobs · 22/11/2011 14:10

If it's just romper kinda things your after then H&M or Boots have some good stuff. Or look up Nordic kids on google. Bit pricey but love their stuff

tilder · 22/11/2011 14:27

Thanks for the ideas - I do like the Nordic kids ones (agree they are pricey but if am only buying one romper suit...) and the JL stuff you link to (can't find on the search tho) plus the polarn stuff is lovely. Any more ideas gratefully received!

M&S and other places will be getting red outfits in for Christmas, though some are rather Christmas themed.

Alternatively get some white things and a pack of Dylon? Ds looked rather good in purple.

RockChick1984 · 22/11/2011 19:50

Debenhams also tend to have things in bright colours for newborns - have always found the most unisex items to be in the boys section in shops so maybe worth looking through boys clothes when shopping online?

4madboys · 22/11/2011 19:58

toby tiger does colourful stuff.

also when i was preg i bought plain stuff, just white and then dyed it some all one colour and some i tie dyed, very easy to do, just used dylon cold water dye, cheap and easy :)

Enfyshedd · 22/11/2011 21:28

For a cheap option, there's always Primark - I'm sure I saw a nice multipack which was a white base with thin blue, green & orange stripes or jungle animals. Could just be the tomboy in me, but I thought it would have been perfectly acceptable for a girl...

nancerama · 22/11/2011 21:41

M&S had loads of white and grey stuff when I was expecting my baby in the spring. They don't seem to have so much in stock at the moment, but I got something similar to this. These starter sets are so useful, and the clothes are actually easy to get on and off a newborn.

H&M do lots of bright coloured vests/gro's which are unisex, and other item too. Not masses on their website but plenty instore. Try vertbaudet also, they are a 'bright' style.

LikeACandleButNotQuite · 22/11/2011 21:46

sorry, this one

HappyCamel · 22/11/2011 21:47

John Lewis had some lovely ones when I was shopping last year. We got a set with foxes and hedgehogs on it.

ballstoit · 22/11/2011 21:48

Sainsburys have some cute bits in red and navy blue with 'The Hungry Caterpillar' on and orange and lime green 'Grufallo' ones.

Depending on the ages of your older 2, maybe you could get one of each and baby can bring them the appropriate book as a 'I'm glad you're my siblings' type present when you bring him/her home.

GibberingGinger · 22/11/2011 21:59

this or this?

The picture is rubbish, but in reality the sleepsuits are really cute and bright

NoSeriously · 23/11/2011 02:44

Wait till 2 weeks before you are due and buy two nice outfits. Return the one you don't use!

VikingLady · 23/11/2011 10:42

Believe it or not, Next actually has some nice stuff this year. I wouldn't pay their prices for everything (mostly using hand-me-downs), but do have a cute zebra striped outfit for bringing dc1 home in next March!

Have you tried ebay, by the way? There are sellers of new clothes too, and you could search by colour?

SarahEmic · 03/01/2012 00:32

Try this Swedish make.....
Great stripy gear in bright colours. Washes brilliantly. Sales often really good.

For a cheaper option, buy a couple of packets of Dylon machine dye, and transform all your white, pale and stained baby clothes into funky colourful outfits!
