High blood pressure in pregnancy, what happened to you?

My BP keeps shooting up and I had to go to local large hospital as BP was high, it dropped once I was there so was discharged. I am only 24+3 weeks and I worried what it will mean for me and my baby. My BP keeps shooting up as had it checked at pharmacy today. I tested fine for pre eclampsia on Saturday and I have another hospital check up tomorrow. Hoping it is ok but very worried!

Oh I don't think I will leaving the house if I have to do the 24hr wee test! Sounds wonderful.
Something is up, I went to the loo this morning and by the time I had got back to my warm, comfy bed, my pulse was fast I could feel it.
I am not sure if I want my BP to be up so I get checked out, or lowish and not too worrisome...
I have been breathless but attributed this to my asthma and had my medication increased, thinking it could be a BP thing.

Mine is on the high side anyway, but diastolic went to over 100 in the third tri. I was put on beta blockers which seemed to take the edge off - my consultant was happy with figures around 95. Induction was mentioned but in the end I had an ELCS due to low placenta anyway.

In pregnancy we're all super aware of any changes to our health anyway, and it sounds as if you have noticed changes so please report them to your midwife. Try not to worry though, it won't help the BP!

I am 40 weeks and awaiting labour to start anyday hopefully! I am having a homebirth with a lovely independent midwife as I would be too 'high risk' for NHS policies due to various factors including blood pressure.
Just wanted to reassure you that it can be white coat hypertension. Throughout my last pg I was on bp tablets as my readings were always high (around 160/98). The tablets I was on in 2008 stopped my milk coming in.

This time, I bought myself a home blood pressure monitor (that my mw agreed was a clinically approved one) and throughout the pg, my readings have been consistently normal (119/75 etc). When I have my bp taken by the mw it goes to around 140/95 and in hospital it shoots to 160/105! This has been consistent since 8 weeks.

It is clear I have white coat hypertension (and this is backed up by NICE guidelines recommending a 24 hr monitoring at home). My urine is clear and I have a minimal amount of swelling. I also feel very well.

My mw has said she is happy with my bp and it is to be expected that bp will rise towards the end due to huge pressures on the body. She will not get concerned unless my bp went about, say, 170/110 AND I had other symptoms like protein, rib pain, headaches etc. In the past week my bp has slowly started to creep up (bottom reading never above 100) but again, she said not to worry as all other signs are fine.
During labour, she has suggested that as long as I am able to, i can be left alone to take my own bp reading as it always gives a false high around other people.

All I am saying is that yes pre-eclampsia is serious and should be treated as such, but if high bp is your only symptom, it is unlikely it is pre-eclampsia and be aware it could simply be the setting it is taken in. If it were me, I would ask for a 24 hour monitoring at home if you are concerned.

Have you considered a home birth if you don't want to go to the labour ward? You are then free to have your own pool at home and will be much more relaxed!

The wee test was done in hospital. I was there for 7 weeks, they used to think up things like that to torture me while I was in there (grin)

Seriously though. My DS is a gorgeous hulking great 6footer now and doesn't seem to have been that much affected by my high blood pressure.
I think my bottom one was 105 when I got taken in. Settled to in the 90s, but rushed up to 125 at 38 weeks when they decided to induce me.

I have no space for a birth pool or anything, and have children at home who I wouldn't want to scar for life Wink
I hope I don't get admitted for weeks, I hate to think how it would effect Dd as she would probably have to stay with her grandparents for the duration in the week :(
Fingers crossed it goes well this morning I am doing feck all and trying to relax, Thanks for taking the time to reply :)

I'm 27 weeks today (hurray! Third trimester!) and I've been admitted twice iwth high BP - last time it was 210/115 at my GP's. His expression was priceless - he sent me straight in. I'm on 400mg Labetalol daily and it's back down to high normal for me (130/80ish at home, 150/90 in hospital). I'm checking it myself every day and seeing a doctor every fortnight.

The scary thing is that when it was really high, I felt fine, so I wouldn't know if if happened again.

The medication is making me very dizzy though, and I get strange tingling feelings in my face, plus I can't walk around for very long - I get very woozy and have to lie down. It makes working full time, running a house and keeping a toddler fed and clothed a bit of a challenge! I'm so ready to finish this pregnancy!

Traceymac2 · 22/11/2011 11:38

Listzilla, I forgot all about those tingling feelings! I used to get a crawling sensation all across my scalp. On my first pregnancy when commenced on meds I got really light headed, my bp was very labile swinging all over the place. The dr stopped it for a while when I went for check and had to lie down, my bp dropped from high to 90/60! They hard to start again a cuople of weeks later. Yours is probably swinging a bit too. I hope it gets easier for you.

Bearcrumble · 22/11/2011 12:37

It was quite an odd feeling the first time I took labetalol - lightheaded and a bit wobbly and I felt like I was watching everything through thick glass, really distanced from what was going on.

oltob · 22/11/2011 13:12

PWABB I'm similar to MrsA's story, in that mine was definitely white coat syndrome/hypertension. With my first pregnancy I was booked in with the midwife at home and bp was fine 110/70-ish, first appt at the hospital it was well up,

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 22/11/2011 14:12

Thanks for your replies I have really appreciated it. Thanks
My bp behaved itself fairly well 130/80 for MW and then saw GP straight after it was 130/90. I have been given iron tablets, which is funny because this whole thing started with me going to the DR for Iron tablets and him making me have a blood test! I also have to have weekly BP check ups now, but I am happy with that.
