If you're signed off work with morning sickness, does it say MS on your doc's note?

My work are not going to be pleased that I'm expecting again so soon after coming back and I don't want to tell them yet, so I was just wondering about this. I work from home a lot, but to be honest, sometimes even that doesn't help and I just need to spend a day near the loo/not at the computer.

My doctor gave me the choice between "Complications of Pregnancy" or "Gastro..something". The advice is usually to go for the "Complications of Pregnancy" as your work will find out soon anyway and this way they can't count your days of into your sickness record and your employment is better protected. Worth thinking about if you say they won't be pleased. They won't be pleased then either way, no matter when you tell them, only with the right sick note they can hardly sack you.

I'm not sure if i'm spelling it correctly, but isn't it Hypermeresis {there is a thread on MN somewhere for fellow suffers}. My friend had severe sickness. Do hope it levels off for you.

Seeline · 21/11/2011 12:07

My GP put Hyperemises gravitas or something like that - ie severe morning sickness, but my boss being a bloke was none the wiser and didn't like to ask!! It may slow down the process of the information spreading round the office. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks all - I'm 8 weeks so dithering between holding on for 4 weeks and telling them at 12 (at the risk of negative performance review because I cannot concentrate) or just telling them now...which I feel is too early and I know it won't be kept quiet..

I don't know if it counts as hypermeresis because don't throw up often but the feeling of nausea is strong a lot of the time and I can't concentrate well on work....meaning I'm making a pig's ear of it. I can sense people already getting annoyed as the deteriorating quality of work and I'm just not sure how to approach it for the next month.

I don't even know if I would get a doc's note tbh...

I had terrible nausea, not hyperemesis though and Dr wrote nausea on first sick note then hyperemesis on the ones thereafter. I have been off for 7 weeks but go back this evening:-O

mummyzoe2012 · 21/11/2011 13:47

i had around 17 weeks off with mine and docs wrote hypereglacimer or somthing like that, id tell them now in case you need the support of work i was off from 8 weeks till around 22 weeks. its worth telling them as if you get took to hosbital with it like i did you will need all the support you can get specialy if you have a little one already.

my sickness eased up at 24 and has now returned at 31 weeks.

My GP wrote complications of pregnancy....

spannermary · 21/11/2011 16:48

Congratulations on your pregnancy and good luck with the dreaded morning sickness!

My first note said 'Vomiting'. Subsequent notes were after my 12 week scan and said "Hyperemesis Gravidarum".

There are a couple of factors that need to be considered here:

  1. Letting people know in your own time - my headteacher knew early on, but no-one else did
  2. In some situations, pregnancy related sickness doesn't count towards your record of sickness (as has been mentioned).

Nothing's ever straightforward, eh!

spannermary · 21/11/2011 16:50

...also, on a side note, I have the distinct impression that it was my initial good intentions to work through the Morning Sickness that led to me getting a UTI, leading to the vomiting which escalated into HG.

I wonder if I had taken a few days earlier, whether I would have got HG at all.

That's a completely unscientific, unresearched opinion, but I offer it up nonetheless!

Right, I think I'm going to have to tell work, because I've not been able to answer emails for 1.5 hours this afternoon due to illness and I've really pissed off some people (didn't call in sick, just had to dash upstairs and abandon computer) I don't think I can maintain this (even just a couple of hours a day) and not lose my job.

Problem two:
DH works abroad which is why I work from home. I live too far out to commute AND manage nursery pick-up. When DH is home, I sometimes commute in, but I never quite know when this will be. Long-standing arrangement with work.

I won't be in the office until 12 weeks as DH is currently away, so I have to stay local, to take care of DS

Do I tell boss on the phone, via email (so that I have it in writing...?) Boss known for denying conversations happened/mis-interpreting what was said.

Also, do people usually talk to direct boss/MD (small company 30-40 ppl) or HR (I don't know if we even have HR actually)

All advice appreciated.

Told them in person at 13 weeks last time, but not possible this time round.

i told my boss (and various other people - excitement got the better of me) at 6 weeks as i had been the worlds worst employee all week just feeling hideously nauseous. Its a small engineering company and i'm the only girly engineer but they were actually amazing. My only ploblem now is trying to wrestle enough work back from them to keep me occupied because they are so worried i shouldn't overdo it! i would suggest to do it in writing though, and cc your DH and any other employee you trust so that they know too. that way its well documented! You never know, the boss may suprise you and be great about it, and the relief of not hiding the crappness is massive :)

fredandginger · 22/11/2011 13:31

Sent an email yesterday 6pm-ish...to MD, PA to MD (who is also a friend), CEO and editor. They usually reply pretty quickly to emails but I haven't heard from any of them. 4 people and no reply by 1:30pm the following day. And I'm not in the office to gauge reaction. Feeling very nervous :(
