I had DS2 at 30 weeks and he was small and poorly but eventually came home around his due date. He was hospitalised twice in the first year and had recurrent infections, but I think it depends on how well the baby is when they're born. Some only need to stay in for a few weeks, some longer. DS is smashing now physically, although he has ASD, but it is genetic - but I think before 34 weeks the risk of behavioural issues is increased. Good luck Smile

My friends twins were born at 33 weeks and are now strapping 8 year olds! They were in hospital for about 3 weeks before they were allowed home x

My neice was born at 34 weeks and only spent one night in SCBU and went home after 3 days, so every extra week makes a huge difference. Have you been given steroids?

HauntedLittleLunatic · 19/11/2011 13:23

My twins were born at 27 weeks. Stayed in hospital until about a week before due date.

Perfectly healthy now (age 10). No significant issues on the way either.

I have seen trolleys born at just over 33weeks and only spend 10ish days in hospital.

xkatyx · 19/11/2011 15:29

Aw so glad all your babies are healthy.

I had steroids at 27 weeks. So eager to have them but want them to stay in aslong as we can keep then in.

My son was born (a single baby) at 31+3. spent 5 weeks in NNU but could have been out sooner if I'd been willing to bottlefeed him as he was in an extra week trying to latch on! He was small but caught up tremendously quickly and had no issues - only ventilated for one day. Got a 6 and then a ( on the Apgar Smile. He's now great - never ails a thing (had a lot of tummy bugs as a toddler though) and is very bright academically too. I noticed he was always a bit behind physically (sitting, walking, potty training etc) but not in other ways. I think it depends on why they are premature but the outlook is geerally good by 32 weeks.

My twins were born at 32 weeks and weighed 3.5 and 4.5 pounds. They were born because my waters popped without warning and labour kicked of. I have afeeling there wasnt time to give me the steroid injection.

They were in very good condition apparently, and were only in hospital for 2 weeksall in, (scibu for only a week) mainly because they have a weight cut off for going home and the and kept both twins in unil the smaller one reached the right weight and they could go home together.

They have no apparent problems. A bit late to talk, but very early to walk.

One of my friends had a 32 weeker. He did spend a few weeks in hospital but he is now a boisterous, intelligent 5yo and you would never know that he had been born early.

oenophilia · 19/11/2011 16:16

DS1 was 31+5, DS2 36 and the DTs 36. They're now 13, 11 & 7. DS1 was in SCBU for 4 wks and had some shaky moments esp in the first couple of weeks, with feeding problems and apnoiea. Despite how well-trained and well-informed everyone is, we don't really seem to know that much particularly about brain development. The consultants told us that he was probably blind and deaf and that they didn't know what other disabilities he may have. In the event, he just developed more slowly & had to go to GOSH/Wolfson for clinics for a couple of years. He had some support through primary with an IEP, has some Aspergic tendencies but is just about to choose his GCSE options at a mainstream secondary.

SandStorm · 19/11/2011 16:24

DD1 was 32+1. She had her issues in the early days but today she is a beautiful 13 year old with the world at her feet. :)

silverangel · 19/11/2011 16:50

My twins were 31 weeks, 3lb1 and 3lb3, six weeks in SCBU - no real issues just needed to put on weight.

You need to have the steroids again - my consultant said the effect of producing the surfactant on the lungs only lasts for around a week. Without this they could need more intervention with regards to breathing. Because of the steroids only one of mine needed to be ventilated and only for a couple of hours, they then spent 12 hours on cpap as a precaution.

Bunbaker · 19/11/2011 16:53

One of my friends had her twins at 30 weeks. They stayed in hospital until their due date. They are now 17 years old and fit and healthy.

xkatyx · 19/11/2011 17:05

I asked about the steroids and they said I have had 2 doses no need for anymore?

Gosh such a long time to be in scbu.

My nephew was born at 32 weeks and spent a few weeks in hospital. He is now a gorgeous 5 yr old.

silverangel · 19/11/2011 17:13

Twins will likely be in longer than a singleton as they will have a lower birth weight. The guesstimate for when you get to go home is two weeks before due date.

mum2JRC · 19/11/2011 17:18

My niece was born at 33 weeks and only needed to be in hospital for 2 weeks for jaundice, feeding, temp regulation etc. Now 16 months corrected and no concerns.
I work as a Paediatric Physio and we would follow up babies born under 32 weeks until they are one year corrected.

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 19/11/2011 18:33

I was born at 32+3 weeks and was in an incubator for two weeks and out in about 5. I am fine. :)

InsomniaQueen · 19/11/2011 18:43

I was born at 34 weeks - spent a couple of days in hospital. I haven't had any health issues or problems related to being early.

Hope everything goes well for you. Smile

flippingstupidnickname · 20/11/2011 06:55

My twins were 33 weeks and weighed 4lb 8 and 3lb 12. They spent a few weeks in SCBU and the smaller one spent a week or so in the NICU on breathing apparatus first.

They are 4 now and the smaller one is still tiny (25th centile despite having very tall men in the family) and has asthma and recurrent croup. The other one is doing great but I have to say he's had some developmental issues including Autistic traits and possible dyspraxia. Both are generally doing wonderfully though and the general outlook at this gestation is good Smile. They are happy, energetic, intelligent boys Smile.

I know exactly how you feel because my two were threatening to make their escape from 23 weeks. We were terrified and used to literally count the hours. Bed rest (or rather sofa rest!) was the only thing that kept them where they were for so long. Good Luck!! X

girlsyearapart · 20/11/2011 07:12

My nephew was born at 31+5 after trying to escape from about 28 weeks.
He spent 7 weeks in the scbu but was all ok just little.
Born weighing 3 lb now a very healthy 10 year old.
Good luck

Melindaaa · 20/11/2011 07:28

I've had quite a few premature babies. The one who was out soonest was my 33+6/34 weeker. She was in NICU for two days, then in transitional care with me. We went home when she was 6 days.

The others were earlier, 28 week twins and a 27 week singleton, both in for ten and a half weeks. My 23 week twins were in until their due date.

Realistically, you will be told to aim to be home for your due date, and any sooner will be a bonus.
