There probably isn't any literature about this.. Clinical trials don't really happen for pregnant women because they would be too unethical. You might be able to find some personal case studies of other women who have done this, but iwouldn't expect their experience to be any more valuable than your own.

I am taking anti depressants through my pregnancy and I will (hopefully) breast feed on them. I've had advice that other women have done this successfully and I know tht the baby's heart development was an issue. There was no option of me stopping the ad. Your mum might have felt the same as I do now.

I'm not sure if you are unhappy about your mum's medication, but could you talk to her about why she took them, and whether she had any advice etc? The other thing to remember is that 28 years ago the advice was very different... Mymum smoked through pregnancy!!

Thanks Katy,

It was a lesser of 2 evils for my mum because she has schizophrenia so without the drugs we both may not even be here today.

She did say that I was a very sleepy baby but I was just wondering whether they had any affect on me now.

I had quite bad behavioral problems growing up and was never at the top of my class for anything but that could have been for other reasons as my dad brought me and my sister up on his own.

Im mainly interested to know if it affect the intellect.

Thanks for your reply Smile

Hi NotTheBlinkingGruffaloAgain

Katy's right, its difficult for the obvious ethical reasons to do too many studies on women in pregnancy. However, because schizophrenia is so common and the risks are so great if mum becomes ill in pregnancy some studies are justified although not always the clear cut 'placebo or drug' sort. This seems to be a reasonable recent review of the evidence:

schizophreniabulletin.oxfordjournals.org/content/36/3/518.full

Your mum is right in that without medication the risks to you both are likely to have been greater and generally medication should be continued.

Antipsychotics are thought to be relatively safe drugs in pregnancy in any case.

With regard to your specific question on intellect:

www.camh.net/Publications/Resources_for_Professionals/Pregnancy_Lactation/per_antipsychotics.html

In particular the section on:
'Intelligence quotients of 1,309 four-year-olds born to women taking typical antipsychotic drugs during the first four lunar months of their pregnancy were similar to those of 48,973 four-year-old children of non-exposed women.' There's a link to the actual paper too.

Hope you find some reassurance from these Smile

No probs. Sorry to hear you're having a hard time though and hope things improve for you. Remember to be kind to yourself and look after yourself Smile

I's probably ask this question in chat as it gets more traffic. Even though your topic is pg related it's to do with the long term after affects and you won't necessarily get loads of help from the people reading it as it will just be people who are mostly currently pregnant. Good luck in your research though!

i am in the same boat as in i take anti-seziure medication there are no clinical trials as no one is going to take these pills while pregnant if they dont have to to see the results. but the dangers of me not taking them and having a fit has to be weighed up against the risk of the pills and what is ultimately better for the baby.
