I think this is often due to the baby pressing on your ribs and is pretty harmless, although it is very sore. It can also be a sign of pre-eclampsia or HELLP though. I'd phone the midwives tonight for advice, particularly if you have headaches, swelling in your face or hands, disturbed vision or just generally don't feel quite right.

Dylthan · 17/11/2011 17:15

Definently get it checked out if you are worried.

But I had this when I was expecting ds it was horrible and so uncomfortable no position would ease it.

pregnantmimi · 17/11/2011 17:16

Yes yes yes get it checked its not pre eclampcia. I had terrible pain like my rib in spliting and pushing out on right rib!!! I was in tears about it at your stage I have recently been seeing a chiropracter and its gone she must have managed pop it back in a mc timonty chiroprater well woth the money to not be in contant agony!!!!!

SkinnyGirlBethany · 17/11/2011 17:19

I had rib ache- measured small for dates (5 weeks under etc) then delivered an 8.8 baby who had been hiding up there

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 17/11/2011 17:24

I'm a month behind you at 22 weeks and for a few days now when I've been slouching sitting down I've had discomfort in my ribs. It's just the uterus getting bigger and letting the baby kick your ribs. I'm dreading this, ds was so lively that he managed to give me a hairline fracture in my rib that was bloody agony for the last 2 weeks of my pregnancy with him Shock I didn't know rib pain was associated with pre eclampsia though.

thejaffacakesareonme · 17/11/2011 17:59

It can be a symptom of PE / HELLP. I've found an old thread and will bump it for you as I'm too thick to know how to do a link. It's got more info as to the nature of rib pain that is associated with PE / HELLP.

Pretty glad I've found this. Altho made me worry more. I'm only 17 weeks, but something doesn't seem right, my legs keep swelling, my neck seems to have a double chin but nt sure if tht was my weight gain or swollen? I'm 8st 10. Gained 1 stone so far. Anyway I keep having pain underneath my ribs, sometimes left sometimes right, not constant tho. Comes and goes, but feels a lot like a rly bad stitch, I have lower abdominal pains to but have had them for ages.I also keep getting bad headaches, one day I haven't the next(like today) its awful I had preclampsia at the end of my previous pregnancy.

PamBeesly · 17/11/2011 18:26

I'm 26 weeks too and have very painful ribs, I've tried changing positions, gentle exercise, sitting, standing, nothing works its just plain painful. I've a GP appointment tomorrow so I'll be asking about it then.

LoveInAColdClimate · 17/11/2011 18:28

I am 23 weeks and it feels like the baby is kicking my ribs - surely it can't be yet?! Where is it?!

LadyMaybe · 17/11/2011 18:33

yummicheddars with that combo of symptoms and your history you should definitely get checked out. Call your hospital antenatal clinic and start the phonecall with "I have a history of pre-eclampsia ..."

yummicheddars · 17/11/2011 18:44

I didn't think you could get it before 20 weeks?will deff have to get it checked tho. Just gt that niggly feeling in back of my head. My first pregnancy, I developed it when I was 7 days overdue, and put it down to stress.due to something recently happening. I will have to get checked, I tick every symptom box. Even dizzyness although I dnt have visual disturbances.is tiredness a symptom? That's been unbelievable past week

MrsHuxtable · 17/11/2011 18:53

Yummi, yes, you can get PE before 20 weeks, it's just that it's not very common plus if I remember correctly. it might be called something else.

You need to get this checked out as soon as possible. I'd insist on seeing someone in the next 24 hrs!

yummicheddars · 17/11/2011 19:43

Do you think I should phone the midwife at the hospital now or wait till tomorrow and see my midwife after college?I'm now worried.

WoTmania · 17/11/2011 20:22

I think I would call hospital if it were me. Then they can advise you as to what to do.

harassedandherbug · 17/11/2011 20:59

It is a symptom of pe, but mine wasn't. Google rib flares. Basically its your bottom ribs moving up & out of the way. I'm 35wks today and not had it for 2 or 3 weeks now although mine was exacerbated by being on crutches for spd. My chiro really helped too.

pruney1977 · 18/11/2011 09:08

I got this at that stage, I found kneeling on the floor and leaning over my birthing ball as far as I could to stretch out my upper body really helped relieve it. I used to do it for about 20 minutes and it felt so much better during and afterwards. I'm 35+2 now and haven't had it for ages although baby is now head down and completely over the other side of my body.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 18/11/2011 09:14

Yep, rib agony here too (33 weeks). On the right side my back aches and on the left side my ribs hurt. The only position I can sit in comfortably is to flop backwards on the sofa like a giant beach ball on legs.

PamBeesly · 18/11/2011 12:55

Hi OP, I was at my GP this morning and told her about the awful rib pains I was having, she said it was just ligaments softening and stretching. She said take paracetamol if it got too painful. My blood pressure and urine were fine so maybe she wouldn't have considered PE based on that symptom alone. Good luck (I'm 26 weeks too)
