Nursing bras issues...

OK, so, there's probably a more appropriate area for this, but I'll be buggered if my brain can find it.
Basically, I'm looking at going into a 34K at least, for feeding...I suspect. My 34JJs are just fitting now, but have not yet put on any weight during pg and with the small amounts I can fit in now at 31wks I can't see me putting on much more (plus, I'm fairly sick every time I try and eat anything remotely unhealthy), but will be going to get fitted early dec.
I have previously broked ribs just below underwire line that are irritating the shite out of me now at night without a bra, the soft bra I was wearing at night isn't working (they're essentially too heavy and either fall out the bottom, or the fabric digs in so much that I'm bruising and/or beginning to get broken skin), so I'm thinking a "just soft cup" isn't going to hold them up enough, so am going to have to have underwires (though not at night as I wriggle far too much).
Am I best off:

  • converting a decent underwired bra,
  • is there a magical nursing bra out there I've not found (figleaves, bravissimo etc don't do underwires in a K in maternity for my back)
  • trying soft cups and praying they don't aggrivate ribs (they will), *getting some form of strapping from doc for ribs? and going soft-cup, not even sure this is possible
  • or just get scaffolding/employ someone to walk round behind me carrying them?

Try googling 34k nursing bra, there is a royce lingerie one but not sure how good it is. I'm sure my friend was a 34L when she was nursing her first 9 years ago and bra manufacturing has improved since then so if you need a bigger size than k, they should be available.

I'm converting my existing bras (I'm currently in a 48k) because there are no nursing bras in my size here or in America (over there I'm an o cup!). Well, I say I, my mum is doing it for me. I'm not using nursing bra clips though because of the weight of my boobs, I'm using hook and eyes like on the back of bras so it'll be fiddly to undo but at least I don't have to lift the bra over my boobies. She's also attaching some lace elastic from above where she'll cut the cup to go under my arm pit and attach to the back of the bra so I don't lose my strap everytime I undo it. Hoping it'll work, I found the instructions online and my mum is doing them with her sewing machine so they're nice and strong.

I'm very interested to see responses to this... am a 34g pre-preg and having enough trouble now, let alone thinking about milk coming in!! The non-wired bras make my boobs look saggy and I get massive sweats in the cleavage (yuck yuck yuck!) where they're not separated!

Undersides bras dig in and rub under the boob/top of my impressive bump Sad

Here you go, take a look at these websites

www.nursingbra.co.uk/searchbysize.htm

www.maternity-bras-online.co.uk/34k-192-c.asp

And if you need to convert a standard bra

www.sleepingbaby.net/jan/Baby/braconvert.html

And if you end up having to look in America, this website might help you to see which manufacturers over there do nursing bras in your cup size (I know you're not a plus size like me but I really included it because of your cup size, I hope that doesn't offend you).

Ha! No pruney Don't worry, no offence. I might just be finally let-off and be allowed to scoff cake these last 10 weeks...(psyching myself up for 41/2 wks)...and thus put on weight to be a plus size! Grin I miss cake...

scissors So promising! Alas, they're all either non-wired, or if they ARE wired, the max cup is an H. Sad
Still, very useful links for ladies that aren't as freakishly large as me.

I've just been measured up for my nursing bras and am coming up as a 34f. I bought some Royce bras in style Lauren and my boobs look and feel fine in them.

Def get measured up by a specialist though!

marriednotdead · 16/11/2011 23:09

I feel your pain! There is not enough choice in your cup size and many so called Ks skip so many inbetween they are more like GG/H.

As the Royce styles come up tight in the band, a 36k Sadie may 'do' for nights- it's the best of an average lot.
Although these only go to a H cup, getting a larger band e.g 38H and taking it in may work ok. From what I remember when we trialled them, the overall result after adjusting is far better than you will get from anything in your true size. HTH.

Biscuitsandtea · 16/11/2011 23:13

Oeisha - I feel your pain! Well, not the rib pain, which sounds awful, but the metaphorical large boob pain!

I am currently a 36 HH or J and 21 weeks pg. when I had ds I went up to perhaps a K cup (?) and got some bras from the NCT online shop (after being measured by our local nct bra person). I think even Bravissimo failed me, but that was 3 yrs ago and they seem to do a better range now. However, all ugly, unflattering non-wired!!

I don't get why, if they can make safe wired bras in some smaller sizes, why can't those of us who need the support have them? When I look back at any photos from when ds was small, I'm just a huge mass of boobs SadSad. I do of course realise its not all about how I look, but it's just not comfy to have no support!

I appreciate this isn't helpful as I don't know of a wired bra in our sort of size. But I just wanted to commiserate! I was in fact looking up this very thing this morning with no success.

So, no suggestions, but watching eagerly for someone to solve my problem!

And, as an aside, I am not fooled by the bra manufacturers sticking a picture up of someone with a very modest boob size and telling me it goes up to a k cup. I will not look all nice and supported like her!!!!

idlevice · 17/11/2011 02:58

Have you looked at the Bravado range? They have a semi custom nursing bra which covers a range of 3 cup sizes for each band measurement up to L. It is soft cup so not great shape but v comfy esp for early weeks & ok for around house/at night. It is available from bras4mums.co.uk who have great customer service by phone or email & have local fitters in some areas. Definitely worth a quick enquiry with your particular concerns I'd say.

Biscuitsandtea · 17/11/2011 08:55

Oh that looked great, the bravado one, but when I checked the sizing it only goes up to a G cup Sad

Please tell me if I'm missing something? I was looking at the original double plus one?

BulletProofMum · 17/11/2011 08:57

Thee are some wired nursing bras out there. I only discovered these on #3 and wished I'd had them erlier. They fir so much better. Googlel wired nursing bras

Biscuitsandtea · 17/11/2011 09:20

Bullet, I think Oiesha and I have both googled wired nursing bras - but they never go up to anything like a J or K cup Sad

idlevice · 17/11/2011 09:28

This is the Bravado one that goes up to a L cup (callled Bravado Custom Original Nursing Bra in case link doesn't work). The sizing is a bit complex though, esp with a preggy brain!, best to get their advice on it.

Biscuitsandtea · 17/11/2011 12:16

Wow - I think I might love you idlevice!

It is a bit full on in the cup (so might not suit every day clothes if you don't want bra peeking out the top), but for round the house and at nighttime at the very least that looks awesome! And I like the fact that they cover 3 cup sizes too so change a bit with you!

Last time I couldn't find anything comfortable enough to sleep in at all and it was so painful in those early weeks, when your nips feel sooooooo painful all the time!

I am most definitely going to be on the phone to them to work out which of the incomprehensible sizes I need!

Oeisha · 17/11/2011 13:05

I'll certianly ring them and see if it's wired or not. Looks tempting! Grin
