hi

i was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to deal with the painful side of vomiting? when i vomit its very big and very painful, and the feeling of the stomach acid having burnt my whole chest inside stays for a few hours. im managing to control a lot of the vomiting (which means i just stay nauseous most of the day instead) but like i say when i do have to throw up its big and it hurts. Sad

is there anything i can eat or drink after vomiting that might take away that painful feeling in my chest?

thanks

Gaviscon may help? It is rubbish though, I found being sick before I had eaten anything was best if you can get being sick 'out of the way'?

Thanks purple I'll try the gaviscon next time. I tried 'getting the vomiting out of the way' so ikwym but i was still doing a big and painful vomit. I actually don't physically vomit much as whenever I start gagging I've been able to control it. Im quite amazed actually that I've been able to, I just use my breathing exercises that I used in labour last time and really focus on calming my body down. Somehow it works! But I do gag regularly and when I can't stop it then it really hurts. For some time after too:(

Muslimah I understand how you feel. I've actually had a small tear in my throat from how big my vomit is and it wasnt nice hurt for days. I suck ice cubes or small lolly after being sick to help me feel more comfortable. I find that being sick makes me feel comfortable but we all different. chin up

Ice lollies are good, also sucking on a fruit lolly (the hard kiddie kind) mints are just to harsh tasting just now.

I'm at the stage where I can no longer stand feeling sick and fighting to keep it down so I just stick my fingers down my throat.

Luckily this is not my first baby so I know it will all be worth it in the end. That's the only thing keeping me going just now!

yes, I ate a lot of "ice lollies" to counteract sickness feeling. It's the taste in the mouth mainly.

and I second gaviscon too.

Try to avoid highly acidic drinks and foods, like orange juice or apples and oranges. I find that drinking a sweet cup of tea makes the sick less acidic. If you haven't gone off tea, then try drinking a few sweet cups a day.

I do sympathise. I have found milk to help a bit (which I was really surprised about as the last thing i have fancied is milk). I was worried that drinking it would make me really sick but it didn't.

Another Gaviscon convert here. I also found flavoured fizzy water helped as it moved things along and of course my mouth tasted of the flavour of the water and not vomit. xx

Hi muslimah28
Feel your pain! I've had hyperemesis and threw up 12 times a day sometimes. It was so painful. The only thing that helped during the vomiting was if someone held my upper stomach/under ribcage while i threw up as my stomach muscles would kill. For severe acidity my doc recommended i take Omeprazole as gaviscon didn't work for me. Good luck hope it passes soon!

muslimah28 · 17/11/2011 17:22

thank you everyone. i'll definitely try the ice lollies as well. also ive been eating alot of apples so will cut those down.

sorry to hear about what youve been going through shera and horsey. it sounds like you know what im talking about, when it really hurts during and afterwards. wow, a tear in your throat horsey that sounds very very painful. thats the kind of vomit i do (though fortunately never had a tear), where the food is in big clumps like you only just ate it even if you didn't. ive never experienced that before.

i know what some of you mean about just letting your body vomit, but i feel so drained when i do, that for me stopping it is better (when i can). and also given what ive described about what its like when i cant control it, i want to limit that feeling as much as i can!

muslimah thankfully it werent a big tear and just a small one with some blood. Didn't eat solids for 3 day. I don't like being sick but i find I can rest afterwards easier. God the things us ladies have to go through with having a baby. Men would never of coped :o
