I have no idea where to put this question: bedding for moses basket?

Here will do, I suppose.

I have a moses basket. Didn't use one last time but needed something cheapish for the first few months, can't fit cot in our bedroom, blah blah.

For some reason it only occurred to me in the wee hours of this morning that I would presumably need bedding for the damn thing. But I can't find any that is less than, seriously, ten quid a sheet. This is probably because I am in Australia and the shopping is crap MBs aren't used much here, but I have tried and tried and can't find any better solution.

Is there an easy cheap alternative I am missing? Do people just wrap the mattress in a pillow case or a blanket or something? Are fitted MB sheets actually necessary at all? What about mattress protectors?

Not sure about Australia, but yes I did get moses basket sized bottom sheets (these are the fitted kind, I had no need for mattress protector as mine is plastic, nice) plus flat sheets and those blankets with the little holes in. I think from mothercare or John Lewis. Do they do international delivery in a non rip of way?

muslimah28 · 16/11/2011 11:25

i bought some expensive fitted sheets until i discovered that pillow cases are just as good, especially if there's baby sick or accidents that require changing the sheets regularly!

heliumballoon · 16/11/2011 11:27

Pillow case, yes.
Muslin under baby's head if they are a sicky baby.
Job done.

starfishmummy · 16/11/2011 11:36

We just used pram sheets - flat ones wrapped round the mattress. If I ran out due to ds being constantly sick I put an old (ie soft) towel round the mattress with a muslin square on top. Or you couls just cut up some old sheets from your bed?

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 16/11/2011 12:19

Oh, thank you all. Clearly the answer is to go buy a bunch of cheap pilllowcases and put a towel underneath. I have lots of baby blankets and swaddles and things from DD, but we always co-slept so this didn't come up.

Freecycle. Or cut up an adult sheet and hem.

For future reference, John Lewis deliver to Australia - I think it is around £15 flat rate per order which is pretty reasonable I think, if stuff is very expensive in Australia. Irritatingly, not everything is eligible for international delivery (and not in a logical way), so be sure to check the box that says 'show eligible for international delivery only' so you don't get your hopes up. You seem to have found a MB bedding solution, but you might find it useful for clothes or other baby equipment in the future.

Just had a quick look on Australian eBay, and it looks like there are new ones on there quite reasonably (unless it does something weird to the prices that I'm looking from the UK IYSWIM???).

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 16/11/2011 14:30

bizzee, it's reasonable if you're ordering a lot of stuff, not if you want a few sheets! A lot of companies do deliver here now, which is great, but you really have to bulk order to spread the cost. Thanks for the heads up, though - Mothercare is also moving into the Australian market, but no stores in my city yet.

Catsy, what search did you use? I get one hit from 'moses basket bedding'?

I used "moses basket sheets" - there were quite a few hits, some of them were posting from the UK, but the price looked OK (as far as I understand the exchange rate...)

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 16/11/2011 14:43

Ah. Ah! You are brilliant! Thank you!

Some days i wonder how I ever lived my life without internet strangers, I tell you what.

Oh, thank you! Happy to help!!!

HappyCamel · 16/11/2011 14:46

I used a pillow case rather than a sheet for the mattress. Put the whole mattress in it. DD was swaddled in a crocheted blanket.

YBR · 16/11/2011 17:14

For me the cheapest option was to cut up a double bed sheet and hem. Done the same with a cellular blanket (used ribbon to hem that which was more expensive, but still much cheaper than MB blankets).
