Anything for sinus pain?

Hi, just wondered if anyone had any good suggestions as to anything I'd be allowed to do / take for sinus pain while pg?

I've had a cold for a few days but since yesterday it seems to have gone into my sinuses, which is a bit painful Sad but just wondered if there was anything I could do other than just waiting for it to fix itself?

Thanks

Sorry to hear that, sounds rubbish. When I had sinus pain with congestion someone suggested trying a pure saline nasal spray, which did seem to help. It's important it only contains saline and no other ingredients/drugs, but the pharmacist will be able to tell you what's pregnancy safe.

HTH

Oh that's a good idea - thanks! Smile

hi, i always suffer from sinus pain and i used boots nasal spray. i only found out in second pregnancy that you could use it! hope you feel better soon, sinus pain sucks.

:)

I had a pretty bad sinus infection about this time last year when pregnant and GP gave me antibiotics, paracetamol and a nasal spray (I was about 4 months pregnant). Unfortunately I have it again now but due to bf I can hardly take anything other than paracetamol!

Biscuitsandtea · 16/11/2011 09:25

I will get out and look for a nasal spray today I think! I don't think it is bad enough for antibiotics (hopefully).

I did take 2 paracetemol this morning which has taken the edge off it, but obviously want to avoid them as much as poss...

I didn't take any decongestant (like sudafed) and ended up with a bad infection. GP told me off. Said the risk of being ill/taking antibiotics was worse than taking sudafed.

Try massaging the centre of your palm. It's the pressure point for your sinuses and really does work. Even on twisted sceptics like me!

Biscuitsandtea · 16/11/2011 10:08

I've never really taken sudafed even when not pg, in fact I didn't even know it existed until a couple of years ago! Hmm

That's amazing though about the palms. Does one palm relate to one sinus? It's all in my right hand side so should I massage my right palm?

Also steam inhalation with olbas oil or similar
It does work but it isn't as long lasting as drugs....
I work from home and recall doing it up to 8 times a day with dc1
feel better, you have my sympathies. it's grim.

buttonmoon78 · 16/11/2011 10:20

Either. The pressure point itself should feel a little sore but not always. I do this on everyone I see with sinus pain and even hardened men who take nothing for pain but gripe like little boys are amazed by it!

SukieQ · 16/11/2011 12:20

Acupuncture. And nasal saline rinse. Try a netty pot.

MillyStar · 16/11/2011 14:03

I went to see the nurse about this last week and she wouldnt give me anything, told me not to even use vicks!

She said put my head over a bowl of hot water with a towel for the steam so imy BF went to Argos and bought me one of those face steamers for a tennor and it's definetley helped x

Biscuitsandtea · 16/11/2011 14:33

Might try a bowl of steam after DS has gone to bed tonight. Not sure he'd be particularly helpful with me sat under a towel. Not least because this is a game we play after bath time Grin!

The only saving grace is that at least I can tell people I can't take all the normal stuff and get a wee but of sympathy Wink. After ttc for 19 mths covering two hay fever seasons and ending up pretending that I was taking anti-histamines it feels nice to be out of the closet!!

I can tell my paracetemol has worn off now though Sad.

Thank you for your help though. Will try to get to the pharmacy later and investigate some sort of nasal spray thing later.

Have tried the palm thing but not much joy yet Sad. Maybe I'm doing it wrong? Confused

The nasal spray you want is called Sterimar. It's really good I found.

Also, you're fine taking paracetamol, up to 8 in 24 hours so 4 doses. I've got spd so been taking quite a bit.

buttonmoon78 · 16/11/2011 21:09

If you're struggling, try trying to touch the centre of your palm with your thumb. It's about where the tip of your thumb is. You need to exert quite some pressure on it.

And don't let your paracetamol wear off - ensure it's an even blanket of pain relief.
